From the Pastor s Desk: God in the Race We Run - A Spiritual Reflection Dear Parishioners, Because our sport is so dangerous, it strengthens all our faiths in God. I think it s made me a better driver, a better focused race car driver, and I think that it also helps to give a great understanding of putting priorities in order. Racing means a tremendous amount to me, but also I recognize now that it is what I do and not who I am. --- Jeff Gordon, NASCAR Superstar A dangerous, commercialized place is the perfect place for the Lord. If you don t have the Lord, you'll go nuts. --- Darrell Waltrip, NASCAR Champion Reflection: Reflecting on God in the core of our lives, we might want to look at NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) as a metaphor. One of the most popular sports in the U.S., the NASCAR events are colorful for the spirit of adventure and the possibility of danger. Uncertainty, injuries, even death along with fame and victory are written into the NASCAR drama and thrill. In the midst of such high-voltage activity, the drivers feel the intense need to make room for God and to keep their priorities straight. In their vulnerability and frenetic activity, it would be shallow and superficial for them to pray for victory and fame. As the champions have expressed, they transcend their narrow performance and subject their lives to the overwhelming and abiding presence of God. Their ultimate goal cannot but be the glorification of God achieved through the adventure and achievement of the indomitable human spirit. Using the athletic race as a metaphor for a life with God, St. Paul says I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith (2 Tim 4:7). He also reminds us: Athletes exercise selfcontrol in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one (I Cor. 9:25). Our life is a race. As we run this race, we face trials and tragedies, triumphs and successes. In our eventful lives and uneventful ones, we keep on running the race toward the ultimate finish line, which is God Himself. But God keeps insisting on running along with us in the race, lest our strength flag and fail. Jesus Christ is the perfect way God is with us on the way. We cannot be preoccupied, therefore, with the end of the race and the crown of glory but rather we should focus on the race in such a way that we can always see and feel God as our racing partner. In our secular and sacred quests, God is present. He is present at St. Veronica Church and on El Camino Real/ Market Street and in the Giants/49er Games. Because of our worship in the Church, we develop a special sensitivity to continue to worship God in the thick of our life. As Elizabeth Barrett says, Earth is crammed with heaven and every common bush afire with God. We cannot push God to the edges of our life and to the periphery of our quest. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, we have to keep Him always at the core of our lives. Even when the periphery keeps receding from our view, God will continue to be at the heart of the race we run and in the center of all our struggles and successes. While Heaven is the most wonderfully perfect place for us to be, Heaven depends on the earth in the sense that our reaching Heaven will be possible only because of how we live our life on earth. Robert Frost says in his Birches : Earth's the right place for love: I don't know where it s likely to go better. Hence, while awaiting the beatific vision with God, let s place Him into the midst of our life. If we can run the race with God here in this world, heaven is a certainty for us. If God is with us on earth, can heaven be far behind? Action: Knowing that God is the background from which everything takes perspective and depth, place God consciously in the midst of everything that you are and have and do. The Kingdom of God is in you, but you have to be aware of it and act in a way that it is true. Order your priorities in the deep awareness of the God who races with you along the highways of life. Tie in your life s glory with the glory of God. Accept the undeniable truth of St. Paul: It s not I who live, but Christ who lives in me. To me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Reflecting on the Word Today s Gospel points to the centrality of love in our Christian understanding of God and of how we are to live in God s presence. Indeed, St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, Nothing shows the truth of the gospel better than the love of those who believe (Commentary on John 17.5). It is love that has the power to convince others of the truth of the message that Christians bear. But love can do this only if it is genuine, since we know that there are many counterfeit forms of love abroad in our world. So how do we know that our love is the kind of love that truly reveals God? Our first reading gives one clue. Godly love is always deeply concerned about the weak, the defenseless, the marginalized - those whom the Old Testament refers to as the anawim or little ones. These include the foreigner living among us, the widow, the orphan, and the poor, all of whom are the object of God s passionate concern. So if our love is to be a godly love, it must be a love that acts in such a way that the needs of these little ones are of paramount importance. Our second reading gives another clue. Paul speaks of how the Thessalonians became imitators of us and of the Lord both in their affliction and in their joy, and so became a model for all the believers. In other words, genuine love takes the suffering, joyful love of Christ and the saints as its model. Godly love not only cares for the vulnerable, but does so both at personal cost and joyfully. The task of discerning the path of genuine love is challenging, but in teaching us the importance of defending the defenseless and in providing us models of love to imitate, God helps us to stay on that path. For Prayerful Consideration and Discussion: Who are the little ones in today s society? Who should be the special object of my concern? Who in my life has served as a model of genuine love that I try to imitate? - from Living the Word Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at www.stveronicassf.com.
