ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Dear Friends in Christ, On the weekend of June 9 10, 2012, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. When priests retire from pastoral responsibilities, they remain ordained priests, configured through the Sacrament of Holy Orders to Christ, the head of his Body, the Church. Priests are not employees; they are fathers in Christ and brothers to all. The retired priests celebrate Mass and sacraments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Their dedicated service enables many parishes to avoid reducing the number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. Please join me in offering our retired priests words of appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry. The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. Again this year, we have seen the cost of health care, prescription drugs, and nursing-home care increase. In addition, the priests pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. You may be aware that the December collection for retired men and women Religious is designated to provide only for those in Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection. I would like to personally thank all of our retired priests for their lives and their exemplary ministry. We are blessed to have more than one hundred retired priests ministering in our parishes. May their spirit of sharing continue to enliven our Church! I am thankful to all of you for your most gracious generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers and your good wishes are a great affirmation of our retired priests. Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely your in Christ Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Should we not be good stewards of our inheritance, using our time, talent and treasure to care for the Church. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults This program welcomes new members into its communal life. The RCIA program is a loving experience of the church, and NOT just a series of classes to teach you about Christianity. If you have not been baptized or if you were baptized but have not received other sacraments, please call the rectory office at 773-646- 4877. Leave your name and number where you can be reached and someone will call you and answer any questions you may have. 2012 & 2013 Mass Book The 2013 Mass Book is now open. Have you come to the rectory to make arrangements for your Mass intentions yet? We also have many openings in our 2012 Mass Book, especially from July 1st through Dec. 31st. Remember, Mass intentions include our deceased, in thanksgiving, anniversaries of marriages and birthdays, for good health, special intentions, etc. You can personalize your Mass intentions in any way possible. Mass Intentions Any Catholic may offer up the Mass in which he or she participates for any good intention. Certainly, graces will accrue in accordance with the intensity of that person's participation and sincerity. However, the custom of requesting a priest to offer the Mass for a specific intention, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrection. The faithful generally make an offering, called a stipend, to the priest in order to apply the Mass to a specific intention. By making this offering, the faithful, by parting with something that is their own, associate themselves more intimately with Christ who offers himself in the sacred Host, and obtain thereby more abundant fruits Thus, in normal circumstances, a priest may only accept one stipend for any one Mass even though he may offer up the Mass for several intentions.

Thank you for all your support through out the school year! From the Principal - A Reflection on 2011-2012 As we bring this school year to a close on June 6 th, I want to express my sincere appreciation to the St. Florian community. Parish and school families have been welcoming and supportive. I have met some wonderful people who have been part of this parish for many, many years. One of the things I have commented on throughout the year is that for a small parish community, there are many ministries that parishioners keep alive. The masses, benediction, Taize prayer, decorating the Christmas tree, are very carefully prepared and celebrated. Soon after my arrival, I recognized the deep spirituality that has been cultivated at St. Florian over the years. I chose to come to St. Florian to help the school become more viable. I have received so much more in return. Here is a bit of an update about the school. At the end of this school year, we have 121 children. We only lost 4 students this year. Presently, we have 92 students who are registered to return in the fall. Some families are undecided due to various changes taking place in their lives. However, to have 92 students committed to return next year is very positive. The school has moved forward in many ways. Here are just a few items We have an Emergency Calling System called School Reach. It is a system where we can type a computer message, send it, and it calls all of our school families either in an emergency or just to remind them of an event that is taking place on a particular day. We adopted a new reading program for grades PK-Grade 2 which was written by the woman who owns The American Girl doll company. Earlier in her life she was a Kindergarten teacher. She realized the need for a high quality reading program for our youngest learners. The children and teachers love the program. It has been adopted by many schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We had several after school activities for the students such as: Chess Club, Violin and Guitar lessons, Craft Club, revived a Student Council and continued our sports program. The Board of Limited Jurisdiction and the Action Committees met monthly with a consultant who helped us create an Action Plan to keep moving the school forward. We worked with the Office of Catholic Schools to create a realistic budget, tracking registrations and revenue. We received generous donations which totaled $2,000.00 from the parish during Catholic Schools Week. We did an Alumni Appeal to help families financially who want to keep their children in a Catholic School. This appeal generated approximately $6,000.00 for us this year. This is triple of last year s appeal. Our Parent Club worked tirelessly so that the children would have special events. It has been a challenging year to say the least. I do believe that the people of Hegewisch truly want a Catholic school presence in the community. St. Florian has many positive aspects on which to build a larger school community. There is much more to be accomplished. Once again, I thank each and everyone for their support and dedication to one of the largest ministries in the Catholic church---its school. As our benefactors, we hold you in prayer each day. Deborah Poturalski, Principal Mission Statement of St. Florian School Our mission is to provide each student with a Catholic education in all areas. The faculty and school families join the parish staff and fellow parishioners to form a living Catholic faith community. Our school population is multicultural and fosters sensitivity to the needs of all. We promote the students burning desire for learning. Through education, service, support, formation and challenge, the students are called realize their potential spiritually, socially, and intellectually. For one hundred years our school has been committed to carry out the Gospel values of Jesus Christ on a daily basis.
