Worship start times remain the same: 6:00 PM on Fridays, 10:30 AM on Saturdays. We will return to the Fifth Avenue Sanctuary in September. WELCOME TO OUR NEW AdJUNCT ANd STUdENT CLERgy We notified all temple members of the bittersweet news in early June that Rabbi Tick Brill will be leaving Temple Emanu-El so that her husband can pursue a unique professional opportunity. While her last day at the temple will be October 7, we are appreciative and pleased that she will be with us through the High Holy Days. Temple Emanu-El will welcome three new members to our staff over the coming months. Rabbi Sara Sapadin and Cantorial Intern Alexandra Kurland will join us this summer and will participate in High Holy Day services. (We have included their bios within this Bulletin.) Rabbi Andy Dubin will join us to lead several Shabbat morning Torah study sessions throughout the year. UPdATES IN MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS As we continue to build community through High Holy Day worship, we have simplified seating options in the Leon Lowenstein Sanctuary, moving from four seating sections to two. Our hope is to encourage members to sit toward the front and center of their section. This information, along with seating request and renewal details, can be found at www.emanuelnyc.org/membership. CHILdREN OF MEMBERS CAN REMAIN ON THEIR PARENTS MEMBERSHIP LONgER Consistent with other New York City synagogues, the Board of Trustees has approved raising the age from 21 to 25 for which children of members can remain on their parents membership. continued on next page

FIRST-yEAR dues NOW FREE FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERS In line with national congregational trends that seek to encourage younger membership, we are offering a duesfree first year for our Associate Members (up to 30 years of age), for new congregants and children of members alike. This membership includes access to services of the clergy and the event offerings of the temple and Streicker Center. NO CHANgE IN SECURITy FEE We will continue to charge a security fee of $100 per adult in each household. This fee helps us maintain a significant and proactive security infrastructure. Associate Members will continue to contribute $25 per adult in each household. Your understanding is appreciated, as member safety is one of our highest priorities. MINIMUM MEMBERSHIP dues The minimum membership dues for the fiscal year beginning June 2017 are $1,600 for one-member households and $1,800 for two-or-more member households. (PLEASE NOTE: No one is ever denied membership for financial reasons; please call the Membership Office at 212-507-9514 to let us know of your needs.) NEW THIS year Tickets for Family Worship and Shir Chadash services will be sent automatically to all member families with children under the age of 18. The High Holy days at Temple Emanu-El Important Notes for all Members JUNE MAILING By now, all members should have received their 2017-2018 dues statements and high holy Days seating information. if you have not received this information, please contact the Membership office at 212-507-9514 or membership@emanuelnyc.org. LIMITED SEATING AVAILABLE limited seating is available in both the Fifth Avenue Sanctuary and the leon lowenstein Sanctuary. temple members wishing to reserve seats, as well as persons interested in becoming temple members, should contact the Membership office. NO ADMITTANCE WITHOUT TICKETS As a new security measure, tickets for both open- and reserved-seating services will be required without exception for individuals and families. if you should lose your tickets in advance of a service, please contact our Membership office, and we will issue replacements. Membership staff will be on-site during high holy Days services to assist members who have misplaced tickets, or are without tickets, and would like to request seating. For Members With reserved Seating YOM KIPPUR AFTERNOON COMBINED SERVICES Again this year, we will mark the end of Yom Kippur as one community with the full clergy in the Fifth Avenue Sanctuary. the feedback we received from our members regarding this approach last year was overwhelmingly positive. once again, these services will be highlighted by the stirring music of renowned string instrumentalists the carpenters, as well as the solemn Yizkor Memorial Service and inspirational N ilah concluding Service. BABYSITTING FOR MORNING SERVICES For members with children between 1 year and 5 years of age, we will be offering child care for the Rosh hashanah and Yom Kippur morning services. this amenity is complimentary, but space is limited. Members must register no later than September 8, by 5:00 PM. if you register and your needs should change, please notify the Membership office so we may reach out to those on the waiting list. EMANU-EL WELCOMES This June, we welcomed Emma Kate Lindsay as our new Coordinator of Youth Learning and Engagement. She will be leading our seventh through 12th grade programs, guiding and shaping their participation in congregational life. Emma Kate most recently was a program director at the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, where she initiated their first-ever student-run conference for their Jewish Student Leadership Fellowship. Her previous experiences have been diverse, including work as a sixth-grade religious school teacher, a congressional intern, and a research assistant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She holds a bachelor s degree in history and religious studies from Bates College, where she was the coxswain for their NCAA winning crew team. Welcome to Our New Clergy Members Rabbi Sara Sapadin will be joining us as Adjunct Rabbi in July. She will teach our Shabbat morning torah Study, administer and teach in our Discovering Judaism Program, and join us on the bimah in the leading of services on occasions throughout the year. Rabbi Sapadin was ordained as a rabbi from hebrew union college Jewish institute of Religion (huc-jir) in 2007, where she earned marks of distinction in Bible, liturgy and homiletics. While in rabbinical school, Sara completed a chaplaincy program at new York Presbyterian hospital and served congregations in Kent, ohio; Woodstock, Vermont; cincinnati, ohio; great neck, new York; and temple israel of the city of new York, where she focused on areas of social justice and israel engagement, as well as Shabbat programming for young children. Sara maintains an active social-media presence, engaging with parents, fellow Jews and a whole host of readers through her writing online. She is a frequent contributor to Kveller.com, ReformJudaism.com, Parent.co and RavBlog. She also is a contributor to The Sacred Calling: Four Decades of Women in the Rabbinate. Sara graduated magna cum laude from harvard college in 2000 with a bachelor s in literature. A West coast transplant, she is from San Diego, where most of her family still resides. today, Sara happily calls Manhattan home. She and her husband, Danny, are the proud parents of ezra, Saul, gabriel and talia. Student Cantor Alexandra ( Alex ) Kurland is from highland Park, illinois. Alex graduated in 2011 from Wellesley college with a bachelor s degree in music and italian studies. She grew up at north Shore congregation israel in glencoe, illinois, and is grateful to have worked with her mentors there as a cantorial intern in preparation for her studies at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at huc-jir, where she is a candidate for cantorial ordination in 2020. Alex served the community of north country Reform temple in glen cove, new York, as a student cantor, and at congregation Rodeph Sholom in new York city as a tutor for bar and bat mitzvah students. Alex is thrilled to become part of the emanu-el community as our new cantorial intern. 9
