Homecrest Presbyterian Church Worship of the Lord s Day January 24th, 2016 3 rd Sunday of Epiphany If one member suffers, all suffer together with it, if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. I Corinthians 12:26-27

Gathering Around the WORD Call To Worship God built the heavens, the earth, and everything in them. God calls us to be builders as well. God calls us to build our lives: to restore broken places and continue to grow. God calls us to build our faith: to study the Word and ponder its interpretation. God calls us to build our community: to build bridges of understanding and system of justice. God calls us to build history by fulfilling the promises of Scripture: to preach the good news of God s love and liberation for all people.

Gathering Hymn #409 God Is Here! God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share. Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of the Spirit into open minds and hearts.

Gathering Hymn #409 God Is Here! Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; here are table, font, and pulpit; here the cross has central place. Here in honesty of preaching, here in silence, as in speech, here, in newness and renewal, God the Spirit comes to each.

Gathering Hymn #409 God Is Here! Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd's flock and fold; here, as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore.

Gathering Hymn #409 God Is Here! Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt keep us faithful to the gospel; help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day's dedication, all we have to give, receive: we, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe!

Gathering Around the WORD Call to Confession Our God is merciful and gracious in extending God s love to us. Let us confess our sin as an offering of our trust in God s love and forgiveness for us.

Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession God of our restoration, whenever we come home to you, we realize how far we have strayed and how much we have forgotten of your law and your love. We have not loved you with your whole hearts or loved our neighbors as ourselves. Forgive us, heal us, and restore us to our relationship with you; through Christ we pray, Amen.

Gathering Around the WORD Declaration of Forgiveness (Based on Psalm 19:7-8) God s Word does not come to condemn us, but to make us wise, reviving our souls and rejoicing our hearts. God s Word has been fulfilled among us in Christ, who sets us free to live in accord with God s own jubilee. Thanks be to God, Amen.

Gathering Around the WORD Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Gathering Around the WORD Passing of the Peace of Christ Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. (I John 4:7-8)

Proclaiming the WORD Message to the Youth/ Prayer of Illumination

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (I Corinthians 12:12-31) For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body -- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free -- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (I Corinthians 12:12-31) 14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot would say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear would say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (I Corinthians 12:12-31) 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (I Corinthians 12:12-31) 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (I Corinthians 12:12-31) 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (I Corinthians 12:12-31) 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

Proclaiming the WORD Out of Many One (I Corinthians 12:12-31)

Responding Hymn # 306 Blest Be the Tie that Binds Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

Responding Hymn # 306 Blest Be the Tie that Binds Before our Father's throne we pour our ardent prayers. Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares.

Responding Hymn # 306 Blest Be the Tie that Binds We share our mutual woes; our mutual burdens bear. And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear.

Responding Hymn # 306 Blest Be the Tie that Binds When we are called to part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again.

Responding Hymn # 306 Blest Be the Tie that Binds From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin we shall be free; and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.
