God Brings Us Together and Encounters Us October 23, 2016 9:30 AM Prelude Aria Paul Manz Choir Introit Celebrate the Day Pepper Choplin Welcome Call to Worship [Responsive] In the beginning was nothing. and then there was something: Dirt and DNA; mud and mitochondria; the holy breath of God infusing human beings with cosmic, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Life! In all that is explainable and in all that is mysterious, in all that is known and in all that is unknown, In all that is biology and in all that is faith, in all that has been and is, In all that is and will be, we praise god in amazement! We praise god for wonder! We praise god with worship! Let it be so. Let us worship God. *Opening Hymn #412 God, Reveal Your Presence...Transforms Our Hearts and Minds...
Page 2 Invitation to Confession Silent Prayers of Confession Prayer of Confession (Unison) Sovereign God, we confess that we have not turned away from sin. We celebrate our achievements and look down on our neighbors. We boast about our virtues and deny the worth of others. Forgive us, God of grace. Be merciful to us, for we are indeed sinners in great need of redemption; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Assurance of Pardon (Responsive) The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. God s mercy extends to sinners such as us. Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God. Passing of the Peace of Christ The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Proclamation of the Word Being a Child in the Kingdom of God Pastor Ina Boyd *Affirmation of Faith (Responsive) We believe that unity is both a gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus Christ. Through the work of God s Spirit, unity is a binding force. At the same time, unity must also be earnestly pursued and sought. We must be continually built up to attain this unity. Our unity must become visible to the world. Separation and hatred between people and groups is sin, already conquered by Christ. Anything threatening our unity has no place in the church. We commit ourselves to resisting anything that threatens our unity. The unity of the people of God is active and made manifest. Thanks be to God.
