( Narcissus by Caravaggio used with public domain permission. ) What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly - that is the first law of nature. -Voltaire www.colonialucc.org October 16, 2016 913-362-7735 10:15 a.m.

The Colonial Church in Prairie Village United Church of Christ Unity in Diversity Sunday Worship Service in the series Relationship Matters 1 Please silence your electronic devices in preparation for worship. * Please rise in body or spirit We Gather as God s Beloved People Gathering Music Picardy -Schack Welcome and Call to Worship (Please sign and pass pew pads and fill out Prayer Request cards you may have. You can place the Prayer Request cards in the offering plates later in the service.) Leader: God is good People: all the time! Leader: All the time People: God is good! * Opening Hymn on bulletin page 7 Kum ba Yah A Time of Confession Invitation to Confession Prayer of Confession A culture of narcissism has modeled hate and incivility. There are those whose god is their stomach - their own wants and desires. This morning we call ourselves to a better Way of living, both individually and culturally. The sickness of these days can be treated. Redemption is possible, LORD. Remind and encourage us this morning. Amen. Silent Meditation Assurance of Grace

* Sung Response Gloria #759 adapted Glory to the Creator, and to the Christ, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. World without end. Amen. Amen. 2 * Sharing God s Welcome (Greet everyone in the hope of peace and friendship.) Children s Conversation (Children of all ages are welcome to come forward to the chancel steps. Following the Conversation, children are welcome to remain to worship or to participate in our Sunday School.) This little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine, this little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine, this little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. We Hear a Word from God A Word in Music Be Not Afraid -Courtney A Word Proclaimed -Pastor Aaron Roberts When Times Grow Dark Matthew 24:10-12 [Jesus predicted a time when] many will fall away. They will betray each other and hate each other. Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because disobedience will expand, the love of many will grow cold. Narcissism 2 Timothy 3:2-5 People will be selfish and love money. They will be the kind of people who brag and who are proud. They will slander others, and they will be disobedient to their parents. They will be ungrateful, unholy, unloving, contrary, and critical. They will be without self-control and brutal, and they won't love what is good. They will be people who are disloyal, reckless, and conceited. They will love pleasure instead of loving God. They will look like they are religious but deny God's power. Avoid people like this.

A Call to Christians to Live Differently Philippians 2:3-5 Don't do anything for selfish purposes, but with humility think of others as better than yourselves. Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others. Adopt the attitude that was in Christ Jesus. The Milk of Consequences 1 Corinthians 3:1-2 I couldn't talk to you like spiritual people but like unspiritual people, like babies in Christ. I gave you milk to drink instead of solid food, because you weren't up to it yet. Express your thoughts via social media at #ColonialUCC 3 We Respond with Gratitude and Prayer * Hymn #388 Help Us Accept Each Other A Time of Gifts and Offerings Invitation to the Offering Offertory Come Share My Life - Glen Yarbrough Baritone Phil Eatherton (Our weekly offering includes food collected in the red wagon to help fill local pantries.) * Doxology (#780 adapted; tune Old Hundredth) Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, you heavenly host: Creator, Christ, and Spirit, One. Amen. * Blessing the Offering Lord, may your church continue to provide moral encouragement. Help us to bear light and truth into a hurting world, and bless what we give today for that purpose. Amen.

A Time of Prayer Prayers of the People Believing that each joy and/or concern expressed is indeed a prayer, after each expression, the Pastor will say: LORD, in your mercy. And the people may respond: Hear our prayer. Praying in Silence Our Lord s Prayer ( Our Father is the traditional way this prayer begins. You are invited to use whatever name for God you find most meaningful (Father, Mother, Creator, God, etc.). These names for God create a beautiful chorus.) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us, not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. 4

We Depart to Serve 5 * Hymn #553 There Is a Balm in Gilead * Renew Our Covenant (Turn towards the center aisle as we bless one another with the promise of our covenant.) We covenant with the Lord and with one another and do bind ourselves in the presence of God to walk together in Christian Love. We seek to worship God in spirit and in truth and to love our neighbors as ourselves. With God s help we will honor Colonial Church in our conduct, support its program, and extend the influence of Christ throughout the world. * Congregational Song of Blessing #809 God Be With You God be with you, God be with you, God be with you till we meet again. O God be with you, God be with you, God be with you till we meet again. * Benediction and Postlude Picardy -Kern Youtz Discussion of the National Youth Event (NYE) and What Comes Next Liturgist: Ancel Neuburger Videographer: Geoff Robinson Worship Graphics Operator: Hayden Ferguson Children s Conversation: Jan Parkinson Hospitality Desk: Elizabeth Uppman Head Usher: Mariam Fleming Ushers: Mariam Fleming, Joan and Jerry Gilson, Marion Taylor

8 Sunday Night at the Movie Please join us for our next movie night at 5:30 on Sunday, October 23. Popcorn and soft drinks are provided; feel free to bring a snack to share. We ll be viewing the film Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace, described by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as an inspiring tribute to one of the great moral heroes of the 20th century. Undeniably poignant and thought-provoking. Why did the German Church embrace Hitler? What was a good German, a deeply religious and pacifist man to do about it? Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian, offered one of the first clear voices of resistance to Adolf Hitler. He openly challenged the church to stand with the Jews in their time of need and eventually joined a plot to kill Hitler. 2017 Altar Flowers Please sign up to purchase altar flowers for your chosen date in 2017. Your cost is $50 and you may take the flowers following the 10:15 a.m. service or designate them for the Care Committee to take to homebound or hospitalized members.
