KNIGHT NEWS ST. CHARLES COUNCIL 2409 LULING, LA June 2013 Chaplain s Message Keep your eyes on the road! Most of us can remember being told this, in an emphatic manner, by our instructor or parent as we learned to drive a car. Keeping our eyes on the road is essential when driving: we insure our safety and that of others by staying focused. Learning to navigate the journey of faith as disciples and stewards, we become watchful of signs on our way as well: Stop to pray, participate in the sacraments, and listen to the words of sacred Scripture, teachings of the Church and promptings of our heart. Choose caution when choosing actions or responding to the actions of others. Approach crossroads prayerfully, considering the needs of others, listening to and sharing with them. Doing this helps us to discern and do God s will. In all of the important moments of his life on earth, Jesus stopped to pray. He conformed his life to the Father s loving will and teaches us to do the same; to love and do God s will by giving of ourselves, as Jesus gave completely, with no holding back. We simply need to keep our eyes on the road, focus on Christ and make the right decisions in life. GRAND KNIGHTS MESSAGE Brother Knights and family members, Great Opportunity: KC Council 2409 celebrated their Officer s Installation on June 15, 2013 at St. Anthony Church. It began with a Mass at 4:00pm, then social time was from 5:00pm to 6:00pm inside St. Anthony Hall, and the Installation started at 6:10pm. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed an exceptional four course meal prepared by Brother Blaine Guillot. Brother Blaine is not only a member of council 2409 but head chef of the St. Charles Parish Hospital. The food was awesome especially the banana foster cheese cake that he fixed in front of everyone. Mrs. Kacy Kernan, Director of Community Impact at the St. Charles Parish United Way was the Guest Speaker. We were very fortunate to have someone so talented and professional address the guest on the Mission of the United Way. Her speech was very interesting and informative. From the feedback I received the Installation was a great success. I would like to thank everyone involved in making this Installation a great success. Fr. John Finn, Chaplain 1

I ask that all of you remember our sick, distress, shut in, and deceased members and their families in your prayers. For all those that have a birthday in June, please have a Happy Birthday. Your Faithful Brother in Christ Melvin Burrell, Grand Knight INSURANCE UPDATE For all of your insurance needs, please contact Brother Chris Dufrene at 504-689-8032 or at chris.dufrenesr@kofc.org Only having through work insurance doesn t work Do you know anyone whose life or career has been drastically changed during these years of economic downturn? It s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty now. Maybe there s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change employers. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary. Only having through work insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family s actual needs. In fact, without a detailed needs analysis, any employerprovided coverage will likely cause a shortfall at the insured s death. In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. It will definitely be more expensive. While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you ll know exactly where you stand. Eric Ottemann General Agent Office: 985-649-2703 Ottemannagencymail@kofc.org Rosary Recital Council 2409 prays the rosary every Monday evening at the St. Charles Nursing Home in Luling. We are always looking for help. If you are available and interested, please contact Brother Hurschel Burleigh at 985-785-2958 for details. 3

St. Mark Adoration Chapel Volunteers are always needed and welcomed to help at the St. Mark Adoration Chapel in Ama. Please contact the chapel committee for more information. Debbie Caire Ernestine Kappel 985-785-2032 504-431-9580 Father Michael J. McGivney Guild The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source of information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney, our founder. The Guild distributes information materials about him, receives reports of favors granted through his intercession and oversees the distribution of relics. There are more than 132,000 members of the Father McGivney Guild. The purpose of the Guild is to inspire greater personal holiness and cooperation with God s grace by disseminating information about Father McGivney. The Guild s goal is to spread the good word about Father McGivney s holiness of life, to encourage devotion in his memory and seek his intercession before the throne of God, said Dominican Father Gabriel B. O Donnell, guild director and postulator of father McGivney s cause for canonization. The Knights of Columbus founded the Guild in 1997 concurrently with the archdiocesan phase of Father McGivney s cause for canonization. Membership in the Guild, which is free, is open to all individuals and households, but not to groups. Members of the Knights of Columbus are not automatically Guild members and must elect to join the Guild. The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild Newsletter is published bimonthly except July-August, and is free to Guild members. IT IS OUR GOAL TO HAVE 100% MEMBERSHIP WITHIN THE LOUISIANA DISTRICT! Culture of Life Update.Culture of Life Legislative Initiative As Catholics, Knights of Columbus have the responsibility to work for the common good of society. Catholics--and especially Knights--must, in the words of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, "embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and a privilege, but as an opportunity to participate in building the culture of life. Every voice matters in the public forum. Every voice counts. Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power." The Culture of Life Legislative Initiative seeks to assist councils in becoming more effective in the public sphere. Supreme Knight Announces New Marian Prayer Program Continuing a decades-long tradition, the Knights of Columbus will launch their fifteenth international prayer program this August. The new program, centering on the Immaculate Conception, was announced by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson at the Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New Haven, Conn. Since the first prayer program began in 1979, more than 16 million faithful have participated in the Knights sponsored holy hours. This year s program marks the second time the Order will hold a program consecrated to the Immaculate Conception. The first program was held from 1981-1982. The Order will commission nearly 100 icons of the Immaculate Conception using an image from Notre-Dame de Quebec, in Quebec City at their international convention in San Antonio this August. The icons will travel throughout the world, under the organization of local Knights councils who will present prayer programs with the icon for their parishes and communities. The current program, dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, will conclude this August. It has been the most successful prayer program in the Order s history, Anderson said. Report of the Fourth Degree MSGR Paul J. Richard Assembly 2053 will hold its annual officer installation on July 14, 2013. Installation of officers will take place after the 11 AM mass at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Westwego, 146 Fourth Street. A banquet and awards ceremony will follow at Council 3091, 465 Avenue B, Westwego. Please try to make plans to attend. 5
