G R O W I N G I N F A I T H p. 3 Word of Life Sixth Sunday Ordinary Time (Lk. 6:17, 20-26) Small Christian Communities The Beatitudes Lk. 6:20-26 Luke sums up Matthew s nine Beatitudes, (Mt. 5:3-12) into four. Both, contain promises for a decisive moral decision. It invites us to purify our hearts of bad instinct and above all else to seek the love of God. True happiness is not found in material riches or well-being, in human fame or power, or any human achievement however beneficial it may be; Not in the field of science, technology and arts, or indeed any other creature; but in God alone, the source of all good and of love. (CCC 1723) The Beatitude s are addressed to all disciples, and they are instructions of what it means to follow Christ. It is better understood by considering it s opposite, the woes as warnings for the coming judgment. In the end, the Beatitudes counter the world s understanding of true happiness, showing that it is not found in riches, gratification, entertainment and fame, but in God alone. What is my perception of blessedness? How can I grow in love each day? Are my daily choices leading me to a blessed life? Be in God, Fr. Bing Readings for the Week of February 10, 2019 Sunday: Is 6:1-2a, 3-8/Ps 138:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 7-8 [1c]/1 Cor 15:1-11 or 15:3-8, 11/Lk 5:1-11 Monday: Gn 1:1-19/Ps 104:1-2a, 5-6, 10 and 12, 24 and 35c [31b]/Mk 6:53-56 Tuesday: Gn 1:20 2:4a/Ps 8:4-5, 6-7, 8-9 [2ab]/Mk 7:1-13 Wednesday: Gn 2:4b-9, 15-17/Ps 104:1-2a, 27-28, 29bc-30 [1a]/Mk 7:14-23 Thursday: Gn 2:18-25/Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 [cf. 1a]/Mk 7:24-30 Friday: Gn 3:1-8/Ps 32:1-2, 5, 6, 7 [1a]/ Mk 7:31-37 Saturday: Gn 3:9-24/Ps 90:2, 3-4abc, 5-6, 12-13 [1]/Mk 8:1-10 5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY'S READINGS - FIRST READING: I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" "Here I am," I said; "send me!" (Is 6:8) PSALM: In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord. (Ps 138) SECOND READING: Therefore, whether it be I or they, so we preach and so you believed. (1 Cor 15:11) GOSPEL: Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. (Lk 5:10b-11)

D I S C I P L E S H I P p. 4 Prayer: Liturgy of the Hours? The Liturgy of the Hours is the official prayer of the Catholic Church and it can be prayed alone or in a group. Comprised of psalms, hymns and readings and tied to the liturgical calendar (to allow for devotion to saints and feast days); it is prayed continually and without end by Catholics (clergy, religious orders, and laity) throughout the world. It is offered at various times of the day; with the morning prayer and evening prayer, the two main hours, accorded the highest importance. At any given time someone in the world will be praying this beautiful prayer which purpose is to sanctify the day and the whole range of human activity. In this way, like the Mass, praying the Liturgy of Hours is very connecting because others are praying with you at any given time whether or not you are in the same physical location. Now, in the past, praying the Liturgy of Hours was difficult to navigate and required carrying large books that needed to be searched and referenced in order to pray with the assigned text. That has changed with the introduction of readily available digital resources. It is now very easy to access and follow the readings at any time. Download the free ibreviary app or visit divineoffice.org to get a taste of this powerful prayer. Give it a try. It s a powerful form of prayer! The Church and the Mass: Why do we do that? With Father Bing Saturday Feb 16 8:30-10:30am in the Church (rsvp not required) These quesons and more will be Saturday Mar 2 & 16 With Father Bing 8:30-10:30am in the Office (RSVP not required) Calling all Snowbirds Are you interested in attending and/or helping build a Snowbirds Ministry? If not, don t worry there s still time. Living the Mass is an easy read that walks through the Mass explaining the why s and how s in an effort to shake us out of the regular to transform the hour we spend in Mass and all hours the rest of the week. We ll tackle the discussions in 2 sessions: Liturgy of the Word (pages 1-94), Liturgy of the Eucharist (pages 95-200). If you didn t get a book call the office we have a few extra.

T H I S W E E K... p. 6 GOSPEL MEDITATION - February 10, 2019 Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive; food, shelter, mental ability, income, and access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than what we have today. So why are we so dissatisfied at times? Some Christians can be drawn to the "Prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Have you ever felt a compelling urge to respond to a situation and then found yourself questioning whether you should do so? Fear often takes hold of us, and we find ourselves making excuses for why it is better to just mind our own business. There is a voice within each of us that is saying, "Follow me". What does this prompting mean? The purpose of discipleship is not to secure our own station in life and enhance our comfort zone. Discipleship is about taking risks and venturing forth into the unknown, tending to the needs of others and being prophetic voices of change. We will not drink deeply of life until we listen to the voice of God within. When God asks, "Whom shall I send?", will you reply, "Here I am? send me!"? That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so much, that they were in danger of sinking." What a gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they had ever seen. Yet, what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing. Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God? You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship? Mass Intentions for April, May, and June are Now Available
