Buderim Yoga NEWSLETTER Term 4, September 2018 Dear Yoga Family, This year we have chosen to study the 8 Limbs of Yoga. These 8 Limbs of Yoga are the deeper Philosopy of our Yoga Life. Yoga is not just the Asanas = the postures. Yoga is so much deeper than the Asanas. However, the Asanas are the tool we use to get to the deeper, more powerful part of Yoga. Just a short recap of what we have covered:
The 8 Limbs of Yoga 1. First Limb of Yoga YAMAS Ahimsa: Non Violence Mahatma Gandhi knew that to practice non-violence and peace you have to look within. It covers peace in body, mind and spirit. It includes self-love, how we treat ourselves is the colour of how we treat others. Satya: Truthfulness Truth has the power to right wrongs and end sorrows. Its is fierce in its demands. With establishment in honesty, (not even white lies) the state of fearlessness comes. One need not be afraid of anybody and can always lead an open life. Asteya: Non Stealing Asteya calls us to live with Integrity. Non stealing implies more than not taking what isn t ours. It is an understanding that from the moment we are born, we are in debt to this gift called life. It calls us to think about taking nothing without giving something back. Brahmachara: Non Excess Dealing with the passion of our sexuality as well as our other desires, in a manner that is sacred and life-giving, rather than excessive is the true challenge. Its the moment of just enough that we need to recognise. Living in non excess, Brahmacharya invites us to be willing to walk around turned on not to our iphone and instagram but to the wonders of life itself.
Aparigraha: Nonpossessiveness Can also be interpreted as nonattachment, nongreed, non clinging, nongrasping and noncoveting. Aparigraha invites us to let go and pack lightly for our journey through life, all the while caring deeply and enjoying fully. What if we could trust life, like we trust the breath? Its helpful to realise that things are the way they are! I have a choice about whether I will be controlled by attachment and by aversion. In Term 3, we continued with our study on the Niyamas completing the first 3 of the 5 Niyamas to be covered 2. Second Limb of Yoga NIYAMAS Saucha: Purity. Invites us to cleanse our bodies, our speech our thoughts so we can move into ease, to do what it takes to get rid of the heavy baggage we are carrying, wherever we find it in our lives. Being pure with all the pieces of ourselves, increases our staying power with our own suffering, intimacy, joy, boredom, pain and anxiety. We become safe with ourselves and a safe place for others. Santosha - Contentment. Invites us to fall in love with our own life, by taking space in a calm center, opening our hearts in gratitude for what we do have and practicing the paradox of not seeking. A centeredness that is unshakeable and not riding the waves of the ups and downs of life is the aim of Santosha. Tapas: Self Discipline. Tapas means a burning effort, under all circumstances, to achieve a definite goal in life. It involves purification, self discipline and austerity. Life without Tapas is like a heart without love. Tapas asks us can we grow our ability to stay in the fire and let ourselves be burned until we
are blessed by the very thing that is causing us the pain and suffering? Still to come in Term 4 the last two Niyamas are: Svadhyaya: Self Study Ishvara pranidhana: Surrender I hope you are enjoying this thought provoking study of the 8 Limbs of Yoga as much as I am. Reminding us of how wonderful and complex life really is. Yoga is a blessing in our lives!! Learn to practice deep thinking.most people live on the surface of life. But it is by deep-sea diving in the ocean of thought that you receive the pearls of knowledge Paramahansa Yogananda Welcome Leah Term 3 also saw a new teacher arrive to take the Thursday Evening Class at 6pm to 7.30pm. Leah. Please welcome Leah. Leah took her first yoga class at the age of 6. A strange lady smelling fragrantly of patchouli came to her school and said she would be teaching yoga. They were asked to sit in a funny position (Baddha Konasana) and pretend to be butterflies, flapping their legs like wings. This had Leah s imagination captured. Stumbling across a class at her local gym, Leah found her second yoga experience at age 20. It was the word breathe, spoken by the teacher, which resonated with her this time and marked the beginning of her conscious journey towards self discovery. This journey began with the simple realisation that during anxious moments she would be breathing sharply into her chest or not at all. Through her yoga practice, the discovery of the power of the breath and its ability to calm the mind and body became a life chang-
ing experience. She not only learned to experience yoga bliss on the mat, but was able to apply simple breathing techniques in her daily life. 21 years on, she sees her yoga practice as her daily medicine and her vehicle to self realisation and the understanding of her human experience. Leah has come from a background in the Performing Arts and has worked in the dance/theatre industry for many years. Coming from a love of dance, she incorporates music into her practice and enjoys the union of breath and movement through the style of vinyasa flow. In her classes, she focuses on developing correct technique and assisting students in improving their practice. She believes that when guided by the breath, every student has the capability of finding ease and reaching a state of union within their yoga practice and within their life. Leah
