Zion s Outpost Branch Newsletter 2012 Branch Yearly Theme: Embrace the Truth and Look Upward July Theme: An Eye Single to God s Glory Vol. 27 No. 7 The Church of Jesus Christ July, 2012 2012 Study Scripture Calendar: scripture reading and theme calendar prepared by Seventy Gary Whiting Theme: An Eye Single to God s Glory WEEKLY READINGS: Week 1-7; Exodus 20:1-20 Week 8-14; 1Timothy 1:11-17 Week 15-21; Psalm 57:1-11 Week 22-28; Doctrine and Covenants 83:17 Week 29-31; Doctrine and Covenants 4:1-2 The following is a quote from the scripture calendar: Love requires a concentration and diligence that does not allow a wandering eye. Jesus taught that the eye is the source of light to the body. In order to be filled with light, the eye must be focused on the source of light. Just as it is impossible to hug two people who are separated from each other, it is impossible to love God and have any affection for the world or the prince of darkness. In order to embrace the Truth, we must forsake all that is not of God. Marriage is a picture of this condition. One spouse and forsaking all others is the standard for marriage. During the course of a successful marriage, the wife and husband devote their attention to loving one another. In other words, they start with an eye single to each other, but continue to refine their attention and thus their love for each other as long as they live. Embracing the Truth is having an eye single to the glory of God. Read the FAMILY DEVOTION in this newsletter for more about this month s theme. Liberty and Freedom By David Newman Following are some quotations that help us understand liberty and freedom and the vigilance required to maintain them. Liberty is the right to choose. Freedom is the result of the right choice. The condition upon which God has given liberty to man is eternal vigilance. -Anonymous Among the most inestimable of our blessings, also, is that of liberty to worship our Creator in the way we think most agreeable to His will; a liberty deemed in other countries incompatible with good government and yet proved by our experience to be its best support. -Thomas Jefferson The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground. -Thomas Jefferson Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty. -John Fitzgerald Kennedy Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power. -Benjamin Franklin [continued on page 3] F.Y.I. Visitors: On the first weekend of June, Claire Burford made a visit home to her mom, dad and siblings. She brought a friend with her, Josh Loyd, also from Independence, MO. They are pictured here when they attended church on Sunday. It was good to have Claire home as well as to meet her friend Josh. New Arrival: Congratulations to James and Amber Linthicum at the birth of their son Bentley Michael. Bentley was born on June 20 at 7:46am. He is 19 and 6# 4.4oz. James, (F.Y.I. continued on page 3)

Freedom and Liberty continued from page 1 God grants Liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it. -Daniel Webster Liberty and Freedom are gifts from God. Americans are privileged to live in this promised land of liberty which gift required great personal sacrifice to obtain and as with any gift requires maintenance to retain it. If this nation is to remain free we must be engaged in guarding and defending these treasures. If we are slothful and leave the work to others in. Vol. 27 No. 7 Page 3 this nation, you and I can lose these gifts. However, even in bondage we can be free if we choose God and are faithful in our worship of him. Liberty and freedom belong to those who glorify God in their lives. How do we glorify God? ; By keeping his commandments. [Jacob 2:28] And all flesh is of the dust; and for the selfsame end hath he created them, that they should keep his commandments, and glorify him forever. In a recent women s meeting we read that all things that God created are to bear record of Him and glorify Him (Gen. 6:66). Man, who God created in his own image and gave him agency, is the only part of his creation that does not fulfill its measure of creation, only man can choose to honor or dishonor our creator God. God said that all things that he created were good but man under the influence of Satan has corrupted many things and in so doing we give honor to Satan. This is Satan s plan and corruptible man has become complicit in his evil plan. And this man does, because of pride (elevating oneself above God) in spite of God s work for man. [Sec 22:23b] and there is no end to my works, neither to my words; for this is my work and my glory, to bring to pass the immortality, and eternal life of man. Christ was the first to be raised having victory over death and the grave and brought with him justification (freeing mankind from the penalty of sin). Gods work of immortality of man was accomplished in the death and resurrection of Christ. Christ is the savior of all men, especially those that believe, repent and come unto him (2Tim 4:10). Gods work of eternal life of man is accomplished one-man-at-a-time. We must empty ourselves of self that he may sanctify us (free us of sin). This work takes a lifetime for we must endure to the end. [Sec 59:5c] he who doeth the works of righteousness, shall receive his reward, even peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come. Do we have peace in the world today? NO! Yet those who trust in and glorify God have peace. [John 8:36] If the Son (Jesus) therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Contrast this with the unrighteous: [2 Peter 2:18, 19] For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness (promiscuousness, lewd, immoral), those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought into bondage. Those who engage in such things are in bondage to Satan. [2 Nephi 1:119-128] Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto [continued on page 6]

Freedom and Liberty continued from page 3 man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great mediation of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil: For he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; And be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit, And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, Which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom. I have spoken these few words unto you all, my sons, in the last days of my probation; And I have chosen the good part, according to the words of the prophet. And I have none other object, save it be the everlasting welfare of your souls. Amen. Family Devotions July Theme: An Eye Single to the Glory of God From the pen of Leonard J. Lea...Views from the Mountain, Herald House, Independence, Missouri 1961, pages 39-41 Handcar. All hymns are from The Hymnal, Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Herald Publishing House, Independence, Missouri; Fourth Printing 1959 Sing Hymn: #24: O Jesus, the Giver Prayer: Story: Handcar Years ago an old railroad man told the following story on himself, which may serve a purpose at this time. Working on a spur line at some distance from his employment he was permitted to use a small handcar to travel between his home and the station. As trains were infrequent there was little danger. Year after year, every day, he pumped the handles of the little car, covering several miles going each way. It was before the time of lowpriced automobiles and even the model-t car was still only a knotty problem in the imagination of a young man named Henry Ford. It was hard work pumping the little car. The man began finding fault with it. The handles wobbled. The paint scaled off the woodwork. There was bolt loose on the seat. Some of the gears had worn thin. He longed for a new model of car propelled by gasoline motor. While he was attempting to repair it, one day, in a fit of anger, he struck the driving shaft with a hammer and broke a casting. Next day he walked to work and back home again that night. He was sore and stiff. Suddenly the little car, now out of order, became very precious to him. Indeed it was a blessing that he had willfully and stupidly damaged. He could hardly wait during the next two weeks for a new casting to arrive. The long walk to work and back seemed interminable. The man was very happy when the casting arrived and he was able to put the little car in service again. He forgave its rattles and he forgot all about its wobbling. Everything about it seemed good. He made a vow never to complain again. From that time forth he quit thinking why the machine should be discarded and turned his attention to improving it. Then he learned that he could buy and attach a small and inexpensive motor. With the new equipment installed he could travel to work as well as the best. It served him as long as he remained in that position. Sometimes our jobs become dull and monotonous. Home loses its interest and all of life takes on a flat taste. We can think of many reasons why we would like to junk everything, perhaps even ourselves, and start all over again with brand-new equipment. Even the church may falll under our displeasure and we may consider, in a fit of petulance, the possibility of leaving it. With hammer in hand and temper aroused we strike about us and destroy. Then when we have broken something we learn how precious and necessary it was, not only to our happiness, but to our existence. Every one of us reaches a time in life when he must make an effort to keep himself in line to control his impulses, to repress senseless anger, and stifle bad judgement. Every one of us must learn to control those things or suffer unhappy consequences. Our jobs, our homes, our families and friends, our place in society, and our work in the church are all precious assets that we have been working for and improving over a long period of years;. We have made big investments in them. We cannot cash out and realize our investment. We can collect benefits only by staying in and improving what we have. At these times we must learn to control ourselves and stay in line. When our heads cool off and our anger subsides we shall learn the wisdom of this course.
