46 SESSION 11 (A) GOD IS HOLY (A) Lesson Plan INTRODUCTION (5 MINUTES) God is not only our great Creator, He is also our perfect Judge. The fact that our almighty God is holy, truthful, righteous, and just should inspire and humble us. These attributes should move us to obedience and worship, for He is a God of perfect integrity. His character is pure. As a result, we should praise our mighty Judge in awe and reverence and live in such a way that we will bring Him glory. Today we will study the first of four attributes that relate to God s integrity as perfect Judge. Chapter 12 God Is Holy When you think about the holiness of God, what comes to mind If you were to have a conversation about holiness with your neighbors or coworkers, what kinds of things do you think they would say As we consider the holiness of God, let s ask the Holy Spirit to teach us about this attribute. Lead the group in prayer. At the beginning of this session Dr. Bright observed, The character of an individual, rather than their abilities, determines the lasting value of their accomplishment. Do you think most people in our society would agree or disagree with him How does this statement relate to this study Dr. Bright made the statement, It is erroneous to focus on the love of God without also acknowledging His holiness. How do you think most people you know would respond to that statement How would most Christians respond Do we live as if we truly believe that As we consider God s holiness and how it applies to our lives, how do we make the connection from point 1 to point 5 from worshiping God because He is holy to experiencing life-changing devotion to this holy God In what ways do you consider God s holiness on a day-to-day basis VIDEO TEACHING SEGMENT: GOD IS HOLY (18 MINUTES) The cue graphic on the videotape is Lesson 6 (the video segments are divided by attributes). Let s turn to page 33 in your Study Guide and follow along as Bill Bright teaches us about God s holiness. CLOSING PRAYER (1 MINUTE) Lead the group in a closing prayer. GROUP DISCUSSION (21 MINUTES) What is your initial response to what you heard today

SESSION 11 (A) GOD IS HOLY (A) Video Outline 47 Who else among the gods is like You, O LORD Who is glorious in holiness like You so awesome in splendor, performing such wonders (Exodus 15:11). 1. God s holiness inspires worship. (Isaiah 6:3; Psalm 96:9) 2. God s holiness commands reverential respect. (Proverbs 9:10; Psalm 2:11) 3. God s holiness abhors sin and evil. (Proverbs 15:26; Hebrews 9:22) 4. God s holiness dispels darkness. (John 3:20; 1 Timothy 6:16; Isaiah 6:5) 5. God s holiness evokes life-changing devotion. (Exodus 20:5; 1 Peter 1:15; Romans 12:1,2) Since we are receiving a Kingdom that cannot be destroyed, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping Him with holy fear and awe. For our God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:28,29). Because God is holy, I will devote myself to Him in purity, worship, and service. GOD: Discover His Character, Chapter 12 God Is Holy

48 SESSION 12 (B) GOD IS HOLY (B) Lesson Plan REVIEW (5 MINUTES) Lead the group in prayer. In this session we ll continue our study of God s holiness. We do not hear the adjective holy used very often in our society. Rarely would anyone describe himself that way, or even want to be labeled as holy. Yet, God is holy, and He wants His children to be holy as well. We re going to do something just a little different as we begin our time together today. Turn to page 36 in your Study Guide and look at the Life Application step, Exalt Your God. Let s start our session today by singing the old hymn Holy, Holy, Holy. Sing the hymn. Chapter 13 God Gives Us the Power to Become Holy What emotions does this great hymn evoke in you LIFE APPLICATION (10 MINUTES) What one idea presented in this session really challenged you Dr. Bright identified seven types of false gods: affluence, pleasure, achievement, infatuation, self-worship, sensuality, and other religions (cults, secularism, New Age spirituality). How do these gods infiltrate our lives In what ways can we work to eliminate from our lives the influence these false gods often have on us What are some of the things you can do to remind yourself daily of God s holiness CLOSING PRAYER (3 MINUTES) Begin with a time of personal silent confession for the ways each one of us has failed to be holy. Close with a time of praise where individuals can pray aloud their own prayers of thanksgiving, praise, and worship. BIBLE STUDY (20 MINUTES) As we consider God s holiness, let s turn to God s Word for a look at some of the gods of this world that keep us from being holy, as He is holy. Turn to page 34 in your Study Guide for this week s Bible Study. VIDEO ILLUSTRATION SEGMENT: THE CLAMOR OF FALSE GODS (7 MINUTES)

SESSION 12 (B) GOD IS HOLY (B) Bible Study 49 1. Our perspective changes in God s holy presence. Read Isaiah 6:1 5. a. How did Isaiah see himself when he was confronted with God s holiness b. If you were to measure yourself against God s holiness, how would you feel 2. Unholy relationships compromise our devotion to God. Read Exodus 34:12 16; 1 Corinthians 5:11; 2 Corinthians 6:14. a. What are some ways we make treaties or covenants with unbelievers in society b. How do unholy relationships in our culture influence our faithfulness to God 3. We are God s people living in an unholy land. Read 1 Peter 1:15 17; 2:9 12; Ephesians 5:3,4. a. Since we are citizens of God s holy kingdom, how should that affect how we live in the world b. How should our holy citizenship affect our witness to others 4. We cannot serve God effectively if money is our master. Read Colossians 3:5; 1 Timothy 6:10,17; Matthew 6:24. a. Why do you think God equates greed with idolatry b. How can the love of money affect a believer s behavior c. What practical steps can you take to resist the love of money

50 SESSION 12 (B) GOD IS HOLY (B) Life Application WRITE IT ON YOUR HEART Memorize the following statement and verses. As you encounter situations during this week where you need to be reminded of God s holiness, claim these promises by faith. Because God is holy, I will devote myself to Him in purity, worship, and service. 1 Peter 1:16 [God] Himself has said, You must be holy because I am holy. Psalm 96:9 (NIV) Worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth. EXALT YOUR GOD After the Israelites safely crossed through the Red Sea, Moses and the people of Israel sang a song of praise to the Lord (Exodus 15:11): Who else among the gods is like You, O LORD Who is glorious in holiness like You So awesome in splendor, Performing such wonders Consider the wonders our holy God has displayed in your life. Be specific. Now thank God for them and praise Him by singing the beautiful hymn Holy, Holy, Holy. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Life Application (continued) 51 REFLECT HIS IMAGE We are called to be holy, which means set apart, dedicated to the Lord. First Peter 1:16 says, [God] Himself has said, You must be holy because I am holy. Are there areas of your life that you are ashamed of, aspects of your character or lifestyle that are not pure In prayer, give them to the Lord, asking for His cleansing and forgiveness. COUNT ON GOD Our holy God is perfect. Give your imperfections and limitations to Him. Trust Him to bring good out of your weaknesses and inadequacies. OBEY GOD God s holiness abhors sin and evil. To have a healthy relationship with your loving Father, you must not hang on to sin in your life. Search your heart for any hidden sin and confess it to your holy God. SHARE HIS MAJESTY Moral integrity is not very common today. Does a friend or family member need to be told that there is Someone who acts with complete integrity and can always be trusted Share the truth of God s holiness with this person today.
