Who is a Disciple of Jesus? A disciple is a person who is following Jesus, is being transformed by Jesus, and is joining Jesus on His mission. The job of every believer is a disciple that makes disciples. Discipleship is a lifestyle - It requires a slow and deliberate course of organizational and personal change. Adapted from DiscipleShift Jim Putman He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Phil 1:6 (NIV)
Transformational Relationships in Life Groups Spiritual maturity happens through the Word of God, the Spirit of God, and the people of God. Discipleship is the emphasis. Relationships are the method. In a relational environment centered around the Bible: We Share Connect Minister Disciple DiscipleShift Jim Putman Jesus modeled doing life with his disciples for 2+ years. Jesus - The Best Life Group Leader 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them Luke 6:13 (NIV) Jesus did life with these 12 men for 2 years. Jesus understood the necessity of time and intentional relationship for transformation (growth) Jesus modeled transformational relationships for us These disciples changed the world We need to be in the same process. Sunday morning alone is not enough!
The Disciples Replicated Jesus Discipleship Method 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:41-42 (NIV) They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers Acts 2:41-42 (The Message)
The Fellowship of Believers - Koinonia Koinonia is the Greek word for fellowship. Webster: Intimate spiritual communion and participative sharing in a common religious commitment and spiritual community. It is the intentional fellowship of worship, sharing of meals, studying the Word, prayer, and bearing one another s burdens (Galatians 6:2) as a group. The goal of Koinōnia is to do ministry together. To build, engage, serve, and grow as one body in Christ. https://koinoniaonline.wordpress.com/2017/05/12/why-koinonia/
Life Groups - Our Primary Method of Discipleship Doing Life Together with Jesus Key Elements of Life Groups Share life together Learn together to apply Biblical principles to real life Pray together Serve together Have fun together The Result: Transformational Relationships Growing in relationships with one another Growing in our relationship with Jesus
Relational + Intentional = Transformational If relationships are God s chosen delivery system for evangelism and discipleship, then they are worthy of our highest focus and intentionality. Relational Being a friend (fun/fellowship/share life) Intentional Incorporating discipleship (missional focus) We need to create intentional relational space because transformational relationships take time. (Transformational Church- Stetzer/Rainer)
Transformational Relationships 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
