We had a very successful Fish & Chip dinner in April. A huge thank you goes out to Claire Decker and her crew for feeding over 125 people. Thanks to all who came. We also had a successful Cinco de Mayo party in May. Over 100 people attended the event. Thanks to all of the elks who put this event on. Whenever we plan an event, we need you to support them. All of these events help keep the lodge going. We have the Memorial Day parade coming up on May 30th. If any one is interested in marching or being in the color guard, please let us know. As usual, the elks always participate Flag day is June 12 and we will once again be doing our ceremony. We would like to see some of you there. We had the boy scouts help with the lodge clean up, and they did just fine. We still could use some volunteers to help with the gardens, and some clean up inside of the lodge. The "Got Books" bins were emptied and a substantial amount of books were collected. Stacy Vairo from the Historic Preservation and Museum Division met with Liz Thomas on 5/10. She was impressed with our buildings and grounds. A plaque will be placed on our building to represent our historical significance. Liz will be applying in October for a restoration grant to help restore the buildings. My officer of the month is Elida Tirey for all of the help and projects she does for the lodge. My elk of the month is Chet Morgan for all of the time and work he is doing to get the donations to Kosovo done. Thanks, Chet. My angel of the month is Sylvia Morgan for helping out collecting clothes for the children in Kosovo. P A G E 3 Americanism Above, some of the volunteers that have helped to sort and pack up the second round of donations on May 7, 2011 Above, a picture of some of the orphaned children that our lodge donations help. Aren t they adorable? Please help to send more, as this is just a small group of the kids that show up to the center daily. Currently in our Kosovo effort, we have sent 12 boxes of clothes and shoes over, and $150.00 in cash donations. The cash donations will help to pay some of the utility bills at the center. To all of you who have donated, a big hug to you! As of May 7, we had packed another 6 boxes of clothing and 1 box of shoes, and an additional $90.00 in cash donations. We are still accepting donations of clothing, shoes and money, and will be sending more boxes as we get more donations. Golf Tournament The Elks Annual Golf Tournament will be held at Traditions Golf Course on Saturday, September 17, 2011. Registration and Putting Contest is 8:30-9:30 am. P A G E 4 LODGE ACTIVITIES Our Mission Statement states we will never forget our Veterans and to support our young people in their endeavors with all of the pro- grams the Elks have to offer. Rockville has adopted Scout Troop 2020. They use our facilities for meetings and store their camping equipment here as well. The fa- cilities are donated by us. As many are aware, the attainment of Eagle Scout is a highly sought after achievement. One of the Members of Troop 2020 is pursuing this award this year. His name is John Drost, and he is a Grandson of one of our previous Vernon mayors. John has chosen his project for this award. He will be rebuilding the dilapidated railroad tie wall that separates our parking lot from the walkway that leads to the patio. He will be soliciting materials and do- nations from various businesses in and near the Vernon area. The wall will be reconstructed with the locking stones that many of you are fa- miliar with. He will also re-construct the walkway that is immediately adjacent to the wall. John will be starting his project in the late Summer/early Fall when all materials have been acquired either by donation or purchase. This will further enhance the attractiveness of the area and make it safer for the Membership. John sought and received approval for this project with a unanimous vote at a recent Lodge Meeting. If you happen to see John, please give him one Atta Boy and maybe a small do- nation to help with any purchase of materials that are not donated. Reminder.. Flag Day June 12th at 2 pm. The Scouts of troop 2020 will be presenting the flags. Jim Benoit SR, PER is the contact person should there be any questions. R O C K V I L L E E L K S L O D G E

Decker) FLAG DAY FACTS Many people do not know the origins or basic traditions of our flag. Here are some facts: The first official flag day was celebrated in 1877, and in 1949 Flag Day was made a per- manent remembrance every June 14. Why is our flag colored red white and blue? Red stood for courage, while white stood for purity and innocence, and blue stood for jus- tice. Our flag can be flown upside down, but only as a distress signal, usually at sea. The flag is not supposed to be used for any advertising purpose, and should not be on any temporary use, such as napkins, boxes, etc. OOPS! The flag is not supposed to be used as a cos- tume or uniform, except for military, patriotic organizations, and emergency personnel Betsy Ross was not the designer of the first flag. Mary Pickersgill in 1813 sewed the star spangled banner for Fort McHenry, which was used as a model for the flag as we know it.
