FROM FR. JOE Lent is fast approaching. Here is a concise statement of the minimal spiritual practices asked of us as Catholics. Each Catholic is asked to preserve the penitential purpose and character of Lent, which begins Ash Wednesday. Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent and Good Friday. In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday until they celebrate their 59th birthday are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are bound to this regulation may only eat one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. These practices are designed for spiritual growth. Catholics are not to excuse themselves lightly from these prescribed minimal penitential practices. In 2018, Lent begins on February 14th, Ash Wednesday. Good Friday is March 30th. Easter is April 1st. I have always found a passage from the Gospel of Mark chapter nine to be very powerful in regard to the importance of fasting. After the disciples failed to drive some demons out, Jesus stepped in and handled the situation. Then sad faced the disciples asked why they failed. Jesus responded, Some demons can only be driven out with prayer and fasting. We all have demons we struggle with. Perhaps we would do better if we combined with our prayers little acts of fasting and abstaining, not just during Lent, but throughout the year. ~Fr. Joe PARISH VOCATIONS AWARENESS COORDINATOR We are looking for someone to take over the vocations awareness events throughout the year. If you are interested in this beautiful ministry call the office at 432-4348 HELP THE HOMELESS HYGIENE DRIVE The drive begins on February 18th and will run through March 11th. Your donations of personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies and paper products help stock the shelves of 14 homeless programs offered in Brown County. Drop off boxes will be located in the BWC lobby. ~The Dignity of Life Committee
