ANNOUNCEMENTS and WELCOME PRELUDE Little Prelude in G Minor P. Taylor Please stand CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who calls us into an everlasting hope, who guides us to springs of the water of life, who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom. C: Amen P: One with the communion of saints in all times and places, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Brief silence for reflection P: O God, our merciful redeemer, C: we confess the ways we live only for ourselves. We fail to see you in our neighbor s face. We turn our ears from voices that cry out. We pass by the hungry and the oppressed. In your great mercy, forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake, God forgives you all your sin. Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God. C: Amen 1

Almighty and ever-living God, you anointed your beloved Son to be priest and sovereign forever. C: Amen 3

Please be seated 8:45 ANTHEM Surely the Presence of the Lord is in This Place Lanny Wolfe, arr. Charles F. Brown Chancel Choir WORD A Reading from Psalm 93 L: 1 The LORD is king, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed, he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved; 2 your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting. 3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. 4 More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters, more majestic than the waves of the sea, majestic on high is the LORD! 5 Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore. (Psalm 93) L: Word of God. Word of Life. C: Thanks be to God. 4

Please stand for the GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: A Reading from St. John C: Glory to you, O Lord P: Thereupon they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not enter into the praetorium in order that they not be defiled, but they could eat the Passover. Thereupon Pilate came out to them and said, What charges are you bringing against this person? They replied and said to him, If this one was not doing evil, then we would not have handed him over to you. Thereupon he said to them, You take him and judge him according to your law. The Judaeans said to him, For us it is not lawful to kill anyone (in order that the word of Jesus be fulfilled which he spoke signifying what sort of death he was about to die). Thereupon Pilate entered into the praetorium and questioned Jesus and said to him, You! You are the king of the Judaeans? Jesus replied, Are you saying this on your own or did others speak to you about me? Pilate replied, I myself am not a Judaean, am I? Your nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What did you do? Jesus 5

replied, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my assistants would have fought for me in order that I not be handed over to the Judaeans. But now my kingdom is not from here. Thereupon Pilate said to him, Hence you are a king, aren t you? Jesus replied, You say that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world in order that I testify to the truth. All who are from the truth hear my voice. Pilate says to him, What is truth? (John 18:28-38a/NRC) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord C: Praise to you O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE & NOISY OFFERING Offering will be going to Compass Buddy Bags SERMON Pastor Rick Carlson 6

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. 7

On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8:45 HOLY BAPTISM OF WYATT EDWARD HURT INTRODUCTION Pastor: In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church which is the body of Christ. As we live with him and with his people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. PRESENTATION Pastor: Who presents this child for Holy Baptism? Sponsors: We present Wyatt Edward Hurt to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Pastor: As you bring Wyatt to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: To live with him among God s faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, 8

proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help Wyatt grow in the Christian faith and life? Parents: We do. Pastor: Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Wyatt in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God s Spirit, and help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Sponsors: We do. PROFESSION Pastor: Let us profess the faith in which we baptize today: Congregation: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT BAPTISM Pastor: Wyatt Edward Hurt is baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen 9

LAYING ON OF HANDS Pastor: God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to a new life through this holy sacrament. Pour your Holy Spirit upon Wyatt; the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence. Amen SIGNING WITH THE CROSS Pastor: Wyatt, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS PRAYER FOR PARENTS Pastor: O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon Jeremy and Stacy. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for their child. Strengthen them in their own Baptism so they may share eternally with their child the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen WELCOME Pastor: Members of First Lutheran, you have witnessed the Baptism of Wyatt. Will you pray for him and share your faith with him? Will you remind him that he belongs to Christ and that as Christ s people we all belong to each other? Congregation: We will. Pastor: Then, welcome your new brother in the name of Jesus. Congregation: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. 10

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was handed over, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. THE LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you. 14
