February 2014 St. Peder s Evangelical Lutheran Church 4600 East 42nd Street Minneapolis, MN 55406 Phone: 612-722-8000 Fax: 612-722-8068 Email: stpeders@stpeders.net Website: www.stpeders.net Hands of Healing, Hearts of Service Celebrating servant leaders in our community OTTAR JORGENSEN SERVICE AWARD Since 1988, members of St Peder s are honored for their faithful service by sharing a model of the bronze sculpture of Jesus and Peter installed in the narthex (created by Nicholas Legeros for our 100 th anniversary in 1984). This year s recipients are Sandra Hultgren (who serves as our Meals on Wheels Coordinator and on the Social Outreach Committee) and Ken and Kay Kistler (Among other things, Ken served on the Personnel Committee from its inception through 2013 and Kay has been a leader in WELCA and women s Bible study.) Thank you, Sandra, Ken and Kay, for your servant leadership at St Peder s! THANK YOU FOR SERVING ON COUNCIL! Our thanks to Curt Petersen as he completes his service of 2 consecutive terms on Council. We are grateful for his fine service and leadership on behalf of St Peder s. We re grateful to both Karin Buchin and Darrick Jensen for agreeing to serve second terms, and we also welcome new Council member Stephanie Hawkinson. Thanks to all of them for their willingness to serve these next 3 years - and thanks to all who prayerfully considered an invitation to serve. Where in the world??? Do you ever wonder where those quilts and care kits we give to Lutheran World Relief go from here? In 2013, LWR sent over 450,000 quilts to 12 countries around the world (Angola, Armenia, Burkina Faso, India, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mali, Philippines, Serbia, Tanzania, Thailand). The personal care kits we assembled have been sent as part of 4 shipping containers of quilts, school kits, and baby care kits to the Philippines in response to Typhoon Haiyan. Thanks to our faithful quilters and to all who brought items for the care kits in 2013. Who knows where our 2014 offerings will end up? We are fortunate to be able to depend on the excellent work of Lutheran World Relief as our ambassadors of compassion and care across the globe!

SUNDAY MORNING ADULT STUDY Sunday Adult Forum at 9:00 a.m. in the Conference Room Come for community with beverages and treats. We are viewing and discussing animated videos on the Bible. Each session in the DVD is lead by Christian thinkers and practitioners from throughout the country. The focus of Animate Bible series is to offer insight (historical knowledge, questions, and personal stories) on the way Bible challenges Christians formed by our roots in this sacred text. A Season of Gratitude and Generosity the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5: 22-23 During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season it is traditional in our society to give thanks for the many blessings we have, and as a reflection of that gratitude, to share abundantly with others. This past holiday season, it was apparent that the spirit of gratitude and sharing is alive and well at St. Peder s. Your envelop contributions to our general operating fund were up (we significantly narrowed our revenue gap). The gifts you shared with PCYC, Division of Indian Work and Center for Victims of Torture were outstanding. Thank you. I feel very blessed to be a part of such a compassionate and generous group of people. Now it is time for a new year. As you ponder what 2014 will bring, please consider how the spirit is moving you in your life and consider how your thankfulness will be reflected in your actions. Will you increase your envelop contributions? Will you lead or support one of St. Peder s many ministry activities (if you are not sure what this includes, check out the Annual Report)? Will you commit to keeping St. Peder s community and mission in your prayers? Whichever path you choose, I m sure the Holy Spirit will support you. And your faith will grow in the process. Many God bless us all with the fruit of the Spirit in 2014. Judy Hogan Pub Theology! Pub Theology Wednesday February 12 th 7:30pm! Note Date Change! Come on out for a lively discussion, fellowship, and pizza! All those 21 and up are invited out to Parkway Pizza for Pub Theology. Our topic for the evening will be announced in the bulletin on the Sunday before. All are welcome! Questions talk to Sarah Grans! Meeting at Parkway Pizza 4359 Minnehaha Ave South

FIBER ARTS GROUP POLYMER CLAY BUTTONS Feb. 15th @ 2:00 4:00 pm hosted by the Fiber Arts Group, taught by Melba Granlund Have you ever needed to find the perfect button for a newly-made garment? If you are like me, you can never find exactly what you want at the craft store, no matter how many button cards there are on the racks, nor how many button tins or jars you have collected/ inherited over the years. The solution might be to make your own. In this class, you will learn how to create your own buttons from polymer clay that are suitable for use as embellishments on a fiber project. Please register using the sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board in the hall outside the church office. Materials fee: $5. Other materials you need to bring: 1-2 aluminum pie plate(s), metal knitting needle (for making button holes in clay), and gallon-size plastic bag. Contact Melba Granlund (612-719-0435) or another member of the fiber arts group with any questions. During the Winter the Fiber Arts Group will meet the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the Month from 2:00-5:00pm. Whether you are a skilled professional or someone who is just starting out, please join us. Come share your gifts and talents. For more information, call Melba Granlund at 612.724.6272 QUILTERS GROUP The Wednesday Quilters Group meets twice in February. MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat. Since that day, more than $98 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation s largest celebration of giving and serving. Through this mission, young people learn what it s like to make a positive difference in the world as they collect food, raise money and volunteer to work in charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need.
