www.obcbaptist.org www.obcbaptist.org August 2018 As I write this article for the newsletter, I am preparing to leave on the St Lucia Mission trip. Our team is ready and excited about going to serve the Lord on that small Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles. I am reminded of how we all need to be ready to serve, ready to go, and ready to give. This doesn t mean that we all must leave the country to be faithful. Faithfulness needs to begin right here where we are! As we end yet another church year and prepare to begin a new one, I want to ask you a question; Where will you serve in this church body in the coming year? I did not ask you If you would serve but where. It takes us all serving together to be the church that God desires. We must all strive to do our part in helping the wheels of ministry move as they should. Yes, God provides for our needs but God chooses to use people, just like you, many times to meet those needs. I know that we will be amazed at what God will accomplish through our financial giving and our serving as we do this together with our whole hearts. I recently shared a message on a Sunday evening at Oakdale from Galatians 6. Galatians 6:9 encourages us, And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Let s commit ourselves to the task before us which is to do good. Don t allow weariness to cause you to back away. Souls are at stake. We have so many we need to reach. Now, just in case you are saying, When I get a round tuit, I will do what I need to do. When I get a round tuit I will give, I will serve, I will attend. Well, you no longer can use that excuse because now you have a round tuit: AUGUST 8TH 6:00 PM AUGUST 19TH Youth & Children Back to School party (Denton Street Pool) 6:00 PM-8:00 PM JULY 30TH-AUGUST 3RD AUGUST 8TH (No other activities) AUGUST 26TH 11:00 AM Dr. Elmer Towns (Co-founder of Liberty University) Pastor Mike Our mission is to KNOW Jesus, SERVE Jesus, SHARE Jesus

Thank you for all the prayers, calls and visits during my time in the hospital. Your support was greatly appreciated. In Christ s Love, Barbara Summerlin ******************************************* To my church family, Thank you so much for the prayers, the cards, the hugs and kind words at the passing of my sister, Linda Sawyer Moore. It was very much appreciated and a great comfort. Thank you! Mary Sawyer Harrell SEARCHING FOR PICTURES During the Homecoming Celebration Sunday, we would like to have a Power Point playing during our meal for remembrance of the past 75 years. It can be viewed at your convenience as you eat and fellowship. If you have pictures of any historical event of Oakdale, or if you were married here and would like to have one photo of your wedding or a baby dedication, please bring it to the church office as soon as possible. Please put your name on the picture so it can be returned to you as soon as it is scanned. Thank you for being a part of the past 75 years at Oakdale Baptist Church. God s plan has always been to finance His work through the tithes and offerings of His people. From Miss Angie: Sometimes I fear that some of you don t read the Music news because you don t think of yourself as being part of the music ministry. Well, indeed you are! Music is such a vital part of our worship here at Oakdale and surely we all are involved in worship. Even if you don t sing in the choir, it is such a joy to look out during our opening praise time and see all of you giving such a sweet praise offering to God. The Community Choir (3 churches) is having a great time preparing for our service on September 9 th at 4:00 at West Edgecombe Baptist Church. This will be the only presentation of The Only Name (Yours Will Be) that we will do so mark your calendars and plan to be a part of that special service. Finally, rehearsals for the children s choir Christmas program will begin on Wednesday, August 29th. We will listen to our play and the children can have input that night on which role they would like to have. OBC has so many children, let s make this the best Christmas program ever! 3:30 Student Ministries Pastor Aaron Laskey Praise the Lord for a great week of youth camp back at the end of June. Everyone seemed to have a great time. Crossings Camp is one of the better youth camps that I ve been to. Some camps unfortunately focus too much on entertainment, even in the way that the speakers teach, which leads to messages that don t have much to say from the Scriptures. But this camp had a speaker who was committed to teaching from the Word and music that had a lot of substance in the lyrics. By the end of the week we had several students vocalize commitments to attend church more consistently and spend time in the Word and in prayer more often. The following week of VBS also went well. We had 20+ middle and high school students every night, not including the students who served.. On August 19th from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM, there will be a joint Youth and Children Back to School party at Denton Street pool. A devotion will be presented during dinner at the pool. TEACHERS FOR BIBLE SKILLS AND DRILLS Teachers are still needed for Wednesday night Bible Skills classes. We need more people to join us on the Children s ministry team. Please be in prayer to see if you have a place with the team. We plan activities and ministry opportunities for the children throughout the year. Looking ahead to the month of August, we have several things to make note of on the calendar. There s a youth ministry team meeting, service project at the InJoy Thrift Store, and youth/ children s pool party. In addition, we ve started having Open Gym a couple days a week in the afternoons. That will continue through August. If there s anyone not currently involved with the youth who would like to serve the youth here at OBC, please pray about it and come talk to me. August Schedule: Aug 5 th 4:30pm Aug 11 th 1:00pm-5:00pm Aug 19 th 6:00pm-8:00pm Youth Ministry Team Meeting Service Project at InJoy Thrift Store Youth and Children Pool Party Youth will continue to meet every Sunday night at 6:00pm (except the 19 th due to the pool party) and every Wednesday night at 7:00pm (except the 8 th due to the business meeting). Every Monday and Thursday from 12pm-3pm the gym and youth room will be open for any youth to come and play games. Days and times are subject to change if necessary. The church is the Bride of Christ, we are all an integral part and play an important role in assuring the Bride is ready when Christ returns. In order to be a working part of the ministry of OBC, we first need to recognize the needs present and then match those needs with the spiritual gift(s) God has blessed each of us with! With a new church year fast approaching, the timing is perfect for these reminders get involved!! Be Present! The most important part of church service is simply your presence. Hebrews 10:25 tells us that by meeting together we are encouraging and building up our brothers and sisters! Be a Greeter! Volunteer at our Welcome Center, in the parking lot, or just walk around the sanctuary before and after services offering a warm smile, a handshake or a hug! Talk to people you don t know and make them feel welcome. Be Aware and Available! Look for opportunities for ministry mentor a youth or college student, help a young mother with her hands full, and volunteer for ministries outside the 4 walls of the church. Hurting people sometimes just need a friend to have a cup of coffee and lend a sympathetic ear! Attend Extra Activities! Bible studies, youth activities, family fun days, movie nights, men and women s monthly meetings and Sunday school are great ways to meet people. You keep a large church small by meeting in intimate groups of people with like interests. Help with VBS! You don t need to teach children get involved by baking goodies, volunteering to help decorate, work in the kitchen, or help with the music or crafts. Extra hands are always appreciated and many hands make light work! Send Notes of Encouragement! Send birthday cards to children and youth. Anniversary cards with a word of advice to young married couples. A letter of encouragement to college students. An unexpected, hand written note in any situation will brighten anyone s day! Visit Shut Ins and the Elderly! Ask these VIPs of the church to share memories of the history of the church! Their wisdom and insights will likely grow your understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by the generations before you. You will be blessed as much as you bless them! PRAY!! Sitting quietly before the Lord and lifting up HIS church, our pastor, associate pastor, staff, teachers, deacons and members is one of the most important ways we serve our church. Pray the Holy Spirit would indwell all church members and spiritual growth would occur throughout the body! Don t wait for the nominating committee to call you beat them to the punch volunteer grab that blessing waiting for your special abilities to make OBC a richer experience for everyone!
