Members packed Festival of Sharing mission kits and packaged Personal Energy Transport (P.E.T.) parts for shipment overseas. Some served at the Central Missouri Food Bank, and others served by doing home repairs, cleaning yards, and cleaning up a neighborhood park. These activities were part of SERVE2012. Community UMC youth, with help from some members of Community s United Methodist Men, helped paint a house and began repairs on a porch for an elderly person. The youth plan to finish the repairs in the coming weeks. Through SERVE2012, it is possible that several hundred lives were changed the lives of those who served as well as those who were served. Thanks to all who gave of their time. To see a slideshow of Community s participation go to http:// www.communityumc.net/#/ unleash/serve-others. SERVE2012 is a project of RETHINK CHURCH, an initiative of the United Methodist Church. Mike Sykuta Community to initiate Second Saturday project If you enjoyed serving Columbia through SERVE2012 or if you missed the opportunity to serve, you may have thought, We need to do this more than once a year. You re right, and you re ready for Second Saturday. Second Saturday is Community UMC s newest local mission and outreach ministry. Every second Saturday of the month, come to CUMC ready to serve our neighbors. Activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will end by noon. Participants are asked to meet at Community and to be ready to leave by 8:30 a.m. Each month the mission opportunities may be different, but every month people from all over Columbia will be able to make a difference for the better in our community. Invite people to serve with you. Everyone is invited, and anyone who wants to make a difference in our community is encouraged to attend. Please mark your calendars for Oct. 13. Mike Sykuta

VOLUME 3, ISSUE 12 INSPIRE PAGE 2 Games, food planned for annual Fall Festival Are you ready to roast marshmallows, eat caramel apples and drink hot cider around a bonfire? On Oct. 21, from 6-8 p.m., Community UMC will sponsor its Fall Festival. Bring your family and friends to join in playing washers or hillbilly golf or pumpkin painting. Festival-goers may enjoy building caramel apples, roasting hot dogs and making S mores. Chips and hot cocoa will also be available. Prior to the festival, a sign-up-forsupplies board will be on display at the church. On the sign-up board will be little pumpkins identifying each food item or activity needed for the event. It s important that if you take a pumpkin with an item on it, that you bring that item. Please don t cross out the item listed and bring something different. Starting Oct. 1 people may also sign up online at http://www.communityumc.net/#/ whats-happening. For more information, please contact Sheri Helm at (573) 356-5492 or at helms@missouri.edu. Tanya Heath Branch seeks donations for spiritual growth weekend The Branch is seeking donations to help young adults attend an upcoming collegeage spiritual growth weekend. The event will take place in St. Louis Nov. 9-11. The cost is $65 per person, and funds are often short for many college-age people. Donations may be made with a check payable to Community UMC (please write The Branch in the memo line) or online at www.communityumc.net. Adults interested in attending this event may contact Tammy Shelton, director of College Age Ministries at tshelton@communityumc.net. This is an opportunity to connect generations in our church family. Eric and Shannon Wright Welcome New Members Eric and Shannon Wright were welcomed into membership at Community on Aug. 19. They live in Columbia with their dog, Katie, and their cat, Spook. Aside from work and caring for their pets, the Wrights enjoy going to plays at local theaters, cooking, grilling and baking, reading, and spending time together and with family and friends. After visiting this church several times, they found that they liked the feel and closeness of the Community church family. They also appreciate the flexibility of being able to worship on Saturday nights if they are not able to attend on Sunday. Be on the lookout to meet the Wrights in person. * * * * * Mike and Cindy Brown joined Community on Aug.26. They say that they enjoy their adult small group, the friendliness of the congregation, and the mission and outreach focus of the church. Cindy is a nurse, and Mike works as a computer programmer at IBM. In their spare time, they like to bowl. Mike and Cindy are new to Columbia, so if you have not already met them, seek them out at the 11 a.m. Sunday service to give them a warm welcome. Mike and Cindy Brown

VOLUME 3, ISSUE 12 INSPIRE October worship features personal testimonies Worship in October begins with World Communion weekend, featuring Steve Baima, speaking in honor of the local Festival of Sharing. Rob Fleming will also give his testimony as part of the fall stewardship campaign. A new sermon series will begin the second weekend of October. The series is called A God-Sized Dream, and it will explore the vision of Community coming together for the future, to serve our city, nation and world in a bigger and better way. Each service will also feature testimonies by members of our church. PAGE 3 Remember there are four opportunities to worship each week: Saturdays at 5 p.m., Sundays at 8:30 and 11 a.m., and Tuesdays with The Branch college-age ministry at 8 p.m. at the parsonage at 2620 Walther Court. Julie Gibson Worship leader Children s church now available during worship services Today s children are busy people. Their lives are filled with activity and inquiry. In an effort to help children get the most out of their time in church, Community will launch Children s Church on Sunday, Sept. 30. Children s church takes place during the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services. Children will go to church with their parents and will be dismissed right before the sermon to head to the Community Kids area. For about 20 minutes, children will learn more about God through a DVD series called What s in the Bible, featuring Buck Denver. Children s Church is designed for children in the age range of prekindergarten through fifth grade. Tawnya Rivers Director of Children s Ministries Community UMC presents Bibles to third grade students It is tradition each fall at Community UMC to present Bibles to all the third graders in the church. Organized by member Kathy Farmer, this event took place at worship services the weekend of Sept. 15-16. Our prayer for these third graders is that they are able to grow and learn as they read God s word. Students receiving Bibles included: Clancy Crawford, Katrina Crawford, Olivia Crawford, Kate Endersby, Hailey Jansing, Josh Meier, Kam-ron Moore, Keaton Rice, Tavion Rowles and Zach Wright. KICK: Kids in Christ s Kingdom (KICK) is happening again this fall. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade may participate. We will sing songs, make crafts, do service projects, learn about missions and eat snacks. Please join us as we prepare songs and skits for worship time. We meet in the Community Kids area from 3:45-5:30 p.m. every Sunday. Please keep Dec. 9 open, as we will have a special event for KICK kids and other members of the congregation. Sunday School: Children s Sunday school is in full-swing. We are discussing respect during September and October. We will study David, Jesus and Paul to see how they showed and taught respect to those around them. Children s Sunday school classes range from age 2 through fifth grade. We have two teachers for each class, and a few people on the substitute teacher roster. We are excited about learning how to respect those around us and those in authority over us during this unit. Gospel According to Star Wars study will begin Oct. 14 A new study, The Gospel According to Star Wars, will begin Oct.14, 4-5:30 p.m., and will be four sessions long. The cost is $12 per person.
