Message from the Pastor, What is evangelism? We like to use that church-y word or do we? What comes to mind when you hear the word evangelism or evangelist? Do we get a chill running down our spine? Are we thinking of those who are on television every week? Would you ever consider yourself as an evangelist??? As Christians, followers of Christ, we are truly blessed to be a blessing to others. When we realize the incredible sacrifice of Jesus, who willingly walked the road to Calvary, suffered a cruel death, yet conquered death through resurrection, perhaps we can experience for the first time just how truly loved we are. That is a gift one that only grows as we share it with others. The sharing part is known as evangelism. But how do we do that? How do we live among those who roll their eyes every time you even mention something about Jesus? How do we share love without offending those we spend time with? How do we be invitational and sincere? Perhaps it is two-fold listening to the guidance of God who is walking with us, while living out our faith through our actions. What does that look like? Every day we are given opportunities to witness to others in the grocery line, at the mall, at our kid s games. Maybe it begins with something as simple as wearing your Mayo UMC shirt and having someone ask you about it, giving you an opportunity to invite them to worship [Note: If you do not have a shirt and would like one, stop in at the church office.] Maybe it is reading devotionals such as the Upper Room while your child is practicing only to have someone else notice and comment. Maybe it is extending a kindness like helping a neighbor jumpstart his/her car even when you are running late and saying God Bless You as you leave. One interesting fact about evangelism is this statistics show that 80% of people who are asked to attend church with a friend will attend. Is there something going on at this church that makes you want to invite others? Perhaps one of our upcoming sermon series or events will intrigue them to give us a try. It begins with an invitation our calling to share the good news of Jesus the risen Christ!! As Nike put it, Just Do It! Pastor Kathy

Thank you for the support and love as I have gone from being a member of Mayo UMC to an employee as Christina Education Director. I have had a great first month in this role!! I feel the transition has been pretty smooth and I love seeing all the children s smiles on Sundays!!! And to hear Jesus is Alive coming from the littlest mouths just melts my heart!!! I am looking forward to Spring to really make it s true appearance!!! The children have been working on lessons about sharing, making disciples and helping others. Coming in the next few weeks we will be celebrating Mother s Day, Pentecost and Christian Home day. We will be helping with our outreach missions; blessing bags and the community garden. I will be putting a bin for collecting items for the blessing bags as our Sunday school students will be compiling the supplies for more bags. These will then be put out for our congregation to grab to send out into the community. We have so much of God s love to grow at Mayo!! I think the students will enjoy getting a little dirty as we do some planting and garden projects!! Many Blessings, Julie Welcome Julie! We have a new Christian Education Director!! From the Financial Secretary Upon being asked to contribute to the newsletter, my first reaction was, "Why?". What can possibly be of interest about being a Financial Secretary? It's only numbers, pretty dry and dull stuff. Then I started to turn the word "numbers" around in my head. Numbers can be interesting. Think of the number of people who volunteer to count the Sunday Offering, both as regular volunteers and alternates. It is quite a few. Please let me offer a huge THANK YOU to our three count teams. Each week they number among the hidden gifts of Mayo United Methodist Church. So, those dry and dull numbers, on a blank page, become pretty important in the mission that the Church plays in our daily lives and those of the community whom we serve. Think of the number of children and families who reap the benefit of the Backpack Buddies Program as well as the Angel Tree Program. We never know at what point our efforts touch someone else. In closing, many heartfelt thanks to the dedication of the Count Teams. You have no idea how much I appreciate your time. Gratefully, Vicky Bergmann Endowment Leaving a Legacy At some point in our lives we may begin to consider the legacy we will leave for our friends and family members. How will we be remembered? What will our loved ones say about us when we are gone from this life? Will they remember our long work days and hectic schedules or will they remember our kindness and penchant for doing for others? Have you considered leaving a financial legacy with Mayo UMC? Setting up and endowment bequest can help future generations finance mission and ministries both locally and abroad. Endowment funds have been used to help support our missionaries, Back Pack Buddies program, local Girl and Boy Scout troops, college scholarships, the Lighthouse Shelter, Doctors Without Borders, the Community Garden, No More Malaria, Youth Programs, and the list goes on. This type of long-term investment limits the funds usage to go toward missions and ministries. A small portion is withdrawn twice per year to support these ministries while the balance remains invested with companies that meet the Social Principle standards of the United Methodist Church. Years from now your loved ones will know that you helped to make a difference in the world changing lives for Jesus Christ through your generosity and kindness to others. Intrigued? Need more information? Contact the church office for more details. mayoumc@verizon.net. 410-798-6110
