Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. Now you shall keep it unil the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregaion of Israel shall kill it at twilight. And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it. Exodus 12:3-7 1
For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. (Exodus v.12-13). The Passover Meal. Roasted lamb symbolizes the lamb that was sacrificed and who s blood was smeared on the Israelite s door posts to turn away the angel of death. o Unleavened bread symbolizes the swiftness of Israel s departure. They left in such a hurry there was no time to let bread rise. o A vegetable, typically celery, is dipped in salt water to symbolize the tears of slavery o A bitter herb like horseradish symbolizes the bitterness of slavery o A fruit-nut paste symbolizes the mortar the Israelite slaves used to make bricks. Also, during the meal people drink four cups of wine that symbolise the four promises the Lord made to Israel back in Exodus. o I will bring you out of slavery o I will free you o I will redeem you o And I will take you as my people Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat porjons. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; (Genesis 4:4) And he (Isaac) said, Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: two one year old lambs each day, conjnuously. (Exodus 29:38) And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. (Heb 9:22) 2
The next day he (John the BapJst) saw Jesus coming to him and said, Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!... (John 1:29) HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER; AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. 8:32 from Isaiah 53:7) (Acts knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your fujle way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. (1 Peter 1:18-19) But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; 3
the Lamb who was slain from the creajon of the world. (Rev 13:8) Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the centre of the throne (Rev 5:6) Covenant: an agreement; a contract; treaty; pact; deal. (LaJn origin meaning a coming together ). A covenant is so important to believers because it is an agreement rajfied by blood by a God Who cannot lie and never abandons what He promises. It is the agreement between two parjes, us and God (patheos.com) Old Covenant. I will make you a great najon. I will bless you and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you. In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. To your descendants I will give this land. I will muljply your descendants as the stars of the heavens. 4
Behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them, declares the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel aker those days, declares the LORD, I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will not teach again, each man his neighbour and each man his brother, saying, Know the LORD, for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, declares the LORD, for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. (Jeremiah 31:31-34) Jesus Himself insjtuted the New Covenant during the Passover Meal. Unlike the old sacrificial system where animals would have to be conjnually sacrificed and the sins were never taken away but only covered, Jesus own blood takes away all of our sins (John 1:29; 1 John 3:5). How much bener is this covenant one which not just covers them but takes them completely away? God told Jesus if He would go to earth in the likeness of sinful flesh (Romans 8:3) and go to the cross for the sins of mankind (1 Peter 3:18), God would forgive the sins of anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour (John 1:12, Romans 4:4-5, Romans 5:1, Romans 10:13). Amazing Communion. Why Is Communion so Important? because Jesus commands us to do this in remembrance of Me. Just as the Israelites had to personally apply the blood to their doors, so we must apply the blood of Jesus to our lives. Because it involves elements of the past, present and future. Because the communion meal draws us together as we share of one cup and eat the bread we are reminded that we are one family (us with all believers throughout the world). We are Christ s body on earth. Amazing Grace. The Lord is not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
