Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod 2001 Jackson Street Pastor Luke John Willitz Mosinee, WI 54455 (321) 465-2077 (715) 693-2910 ilcmosinee@gmail.com www.ilcmosinee.com Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 23 rd, 2018 Order of Service The Common Service (p. 15) Opening Hymn #184: O Holy Spirit, Enter In (The congregation may rise for the final verse of the hymn.) M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Confession of Sins M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. Kyrie

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Prayer and Praise M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Prayer of the Day M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray. Lord God, you call us to work in your kingdom and leave no one standing idle. Help us to order our lives by your wisdom and to serve you in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. The Word Psalm 31 (p. 77) Epistle Lesson James 3:13-18 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. Confessional Reading The Large Catechism The Small and Large Catechisms (1529) were written by Luther to help teach the faith in a simple way for people of all ages. We still use Luther s Catechisms to teach the Christian faith today! Daily bread doesn t just include food but the fields where the crops grow and everything else in God s creation which He uses to preserve us. Large Catechism, III: The Fourth Petition Give us this day our daily bread. When you pray for daily bread you pray for everything that is necessary in order to have and enjoy

daily bread and, on the contrary, against everything that interferes with enjoying it. You must therefore enlarge and extend your thoughts to include not only the oven or the flour bin, but also the broad fields and the whole land which produce and provide for us our daily bread and all kinds of sustenance. For if God did not cause grain to grow and did not bless and preserve it in the field, we could never take a loaf of bread from the oven to set on the table... Now, our life requires not only food and clothing and other necessities for our body, but also peace and concord in our daily business and in associations of every description with the people among whom we live and move in short, everything that pertains to the regulation of our domestic and our civil or political affairs. Gospel Lesson Mark 9:30-37 30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise. 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him. 33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, What were you discussing on the way? 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me. Apostles Creed C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Hymn of the Day #100: A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth Sermon: Like a Gentle Lamb Old Testament Lesson Jeremiah 11:17-20 17 The LORD of hosts, who planted you, has decreed disaster against you, because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal. 18 The LORD made it known to me and I knew; then you showed me their deeds. 19 But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more. 20 But, O LORD of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. Offertory #486: Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us Offering If you are a guest visiting us this morning, please do not feel obligated to give an offering. We understand that you may want to know more about our ministry before supporting it with your gifts. If, however, you desire to give, you are welcome to do so. During the gathering of the offering, please sign the friendship register located in your pew.

Prayer of the Church Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Collect for the Word M: Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart, that being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Benediction M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. Closing Hymn #395: Seek Where You May to Find a Way

Sunday School Teacher Meeting October 21 following worship

A/V Drive The voters of our congregation have approved several equipment upgrades to enhance our worship. Organ You may have noticed that our current organ regularly cuts out during worship. We are replacing it with a newer, gently used organ. Along with the organ we will have better speakers installed for a more-even distribution of sound throughout the sanctuary. The newer organ also will enhance the sound of our HymnSoft music. Vocal Audio System Our current vocal audio speakers are built into the walls and sometimes give off a subtle hum. We are replacing the speakers and purchasing an additional wireless microphone. Video Camera and Streaming System We used to use cell phones to post sermon videos on Facebook, but the video quality was not great. We are purchasing a high-quality camera to be mounted on the back wall. The primary purpose of the camera will be to record our weekly sermons and to have them live-streamed online. The videos will remain available on our website and YouTube channel to be viewed any time. The camera also will give us the ability to record other special events (baptisms, weddings, Sunday school programs, etc.). Presentation Monitors We are having 75-inch television screens mounted on the walls where the hymn boards used to hang. These will be useful for displaying pictures and maps, parts of the liturgy, hymns, and videos (WELS Connection, etc.). The total cost of all these upgrades comes to $40,200. We have received a generous donation toward the organ in the amount of $15,000. This brings the remaining balance to $25,200. From now until October 20 we are welcoming any special donations toward the new equipment. If you would like to help, please label your donation with your envelope number and A/V Equipment. Donations may be placed in the offering plate or in the Treasurer mailbox. Any amount will be appreciated. Finally, in your personal prayers please say a prayer of thanksgiving for how richly the Lord continues to bless our congregation physically and spiritually and pray that the name of the Lord will be glorified through our new equipment.
