CALL to WORSHIP Tenebrae Interludes String Quartet arr. Nicholas Palmer SILENT PRAYER GATHERING WORDS P: All you who pass this way C: look and see the shadow of sin. P: All you who pass this way C: look and see the weight of the world. P: All you who pass this way C: look and see the suffering of our Savior. P: All you who pass this way C: look and see the sorrow of Jesus Christ. P: He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. C: Like one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. P: Surely He bore our griefs and carried our sorrows, yet we considered Him stricken by God, smitten by Him, and afflicted. C: He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed. P: We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to His own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. C: He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth. P: By oppression and judgment He was taken away. For He was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of My people He was stricken. C: He was assigned a grave with the wicked, though He had done no violence nor was any deceit in His mouth. P: Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

WE RESPOND to GOD S LOVE with OUR OFFERINGS Introduction: Seven Last Words String Quartet Franz Joseph Haydn THE SHADOW of GETHSEMANE Mark 14:32-42 32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, Sit here while I pray. 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, he said to them. Stay here and keep watch. 35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 Abba, Father, he said, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. Simon, he said to Peter, are you asleep? Couldn t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. 39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41 Returning the third time, he said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer! MEDITATION Rev. Jim Mueller What Wondrous Love is This Violin & Piano arr. THE SHADOW of BETRAYAL Mark 14:43-52 43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard. 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, Rabbi! and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48 Am I leading a rebellion, said Jesus, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled. 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. 51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind. MEDITATION Rev. Wichieng Wetnyangran Variations on PICARDY Piano Trio arr. Duane Funderburk

THE SHADOW of DENIAL Luke 22:54-62 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, This man was with him. 57 But he denied it. Woman, I don t know him, he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, You also are one of them. Man, I am not! Peter replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted, Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean. 60 Peter replied, Man, I don t know what you re talking about! Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times. 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. THE SHADOW of TRIAL Matthew 27:1-2, 11-31 1 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. 11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, Are you the king of the Jews? You have said so, Jesus replied. 12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate asked him, Don t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you? 14 But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge to the great amazement of the governor. 15 Now it was the governor s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah? 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him. 19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge s seat, his wife sent him this message: Don t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him. 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. 21 Which of the two do you want me to release to you? asked the governor. Barabbas, they answered. 22 What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah? Pilate asked. They all answered, Crucify him! 23 Why? What crime has he committed? asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, Crucify him! 24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. I am innocent of this man s blood, he said. It is your responsibility! 25 All the people answered, His blood is on us and on our children! 26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. 27 Then the governor s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. Hail, king of the Jews! they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. MEDITATION Rev. Yohannes Mengsteab HYMN Go to Dark Gethsemane [verse 2] A Lenten Introspection: Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted arr. THE SHADOW of CRUCIFIXION Matthew 27:32-46 32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of the skull ). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. 38 Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God! 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 He saved others, they said, but he can t save himself! He s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. 45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? (which means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ). MEDITATION Rev. Morgan Hamilton When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Viola & Piano arr. Hal H. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION P: Jesus said, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) C: He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. P: Let us lay our sins at the cross of Christ. C: I come to you, Jesus, burdened with my own sin. You know the sins I carry and how they weigh me down. I bring these to your cross, asking your forgiveness and mercy. You suffered because of me. You bled because of me. You chose to die instead of me. Change me from the inside out and cleanse me from my sin. P: Receive the forgiveness Jesus gives to you. By His wounds you are healed. His blood has set you free. In Jesus name, C: Amen. THE SHADOW of DEATH John 19:25-30 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, Woman, here is your son, 27 and to the disciple, Here is your mother. From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. 28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, I am thirsty. 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, It is finished. With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. MEDITATION John Vawar HYMN Go to Dark Gethsemane [verse 3] O the Deep, Deep Love arr. Duane Funderburk Piano Quintet

THE SHADOW of BURIAL John 19:31-42 31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken, 37 and, as another scripture says, They will look on the one they have pierced. 38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. 40 Taking Jesus body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. REMOVING THE CHRIST CANDLE Light has always been a symbol of God s presence with His people. As the Christ Candle is removed from the Sanctuary, we recall how the presence of Jesus was removed from His disciples, but only for a time. Easter morning, the candle will return, just as Jesus rose from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true! THE STREPITUS The loud noise, or strepitus, signifies the end of our service of darkness. Jesus is shut in a tomb. The Word of God has been fulfilled. The sacrifice is complete. Yet in the darkness, there is a promise of hope THE LORD S PRAYER (Spoken in a whisper) ~ PLEASE LEAVE IN SILENCE ~ There is no Benediction at this service, for this is not the end. Our service continues on Easter! Come and experience the Joy of Easter. Sunrise Worship is at 7:00 am with communion. Easter Celebration is at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 am. Easter breakfast will be served from 7:00-9:30 am.
