PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison) Loving God, Searcher of Hearts, you know the longings we have for a wholeness of spirit and joy of heart. Yet we often hold on to things that drag us into gloom. We are more comfortable with bitterness than with forgiving; we find it easier to nurture our prejudices than to see your light in all people. Open our stubborn hearts and free our minds so that we might know the power of your healing forgiveness in our lives. Let your patient and persistent love hold us tenderly, teaching us to allow your grace to bring us life. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON ++++ *RESPONSE TO ASSURANCE 3
OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE LESSON: Susan Hubbard (9:15) Psalm 42 (Old Testament, page 487) Barbara Visscher(11:00) ANTHEM (9:15) Winter Carol Austin Lovelace Cantate Omnes 'Tis winter now; the fallen snow has left the heav'ns all coldly clear; through leafless boughs the sharp winds blow, and all the earth lies dead and drear, and yet God's love is not withdrawn; His life within the keen air breathes; His beauty paints the crimson dawn, and clothes the boughs with glitt'ring wreaths. And though abroad the sharp winds blow, and skies are chill and frosts are keen, home closer draws her circle now, and warmer glows her light within. O God! who gives the winter's cold, as well as summer's joyous rays, us warmly in Thy love enfold, and keep us through life's wint'ry days. Amen. ANTHEM (11:00) Morning Trumpet Traditional American Hymn The Chancel Choir Scott Gothe, baritone arr. Parker/Shaw O, when shall I see Jesus, and reign with Him above, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning. And from the flowing fountain drink everlasting love, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning. Shout O glory, for I shall mount above the skies, when I hear the trumpet sound in that morning. When shall I be delivered from this vain world of sin, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning. And with my blessed Jesus drink endless pleasures in, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning. Shout O glory, for I shall mount above the skies, when I hear the trumpet sound, through grace I am determined to conquer though I die, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning. And then away to Jesus on wings of love I'll fly, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning. Shout O glory, for I shall mount above the skies! When I hear the trumpet sound in that morning. NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE LESSON: Luke 8: 26-39 (New Testament, page 63) SERMON: Among the Tombs Rev. OFFERTORY (11:00) How Firm a Foundation Traditional American Hymn The Chancel Choir arr. Parker How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He hath said, to you that for refuge to Jesus have fled? Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed! For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine. The soul that to Jesus hath fled for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell shall endeavor to shake, I ll never, no never, no never forsake. *RESPONSE (from Hymn 542, Tallis Canon) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
