Evan served Newman during his pastoral year 2016-2017. He will be ordained a priest in New York City in May 2019. BISHOP BARBER S REQUEST In regards to the Pennsylvania sex abuse cases, Archbishop Vigano s letter, and other scandals that has brought shame, pain and tears to our Church, our bishop and shepherd of the Diocese of Oakland feels the need to embrace this situation with a spirit of penitence, purification, reparation, and reform. He asks us to join him with the following efforts: 1) Conduct a Novena to St. Joseph From Sept. 6 to 14, to pray a novena prayer to St. Joseph for the protection and renewal of the Church. Prayer can be found below. 2) Observe a Day of Prayer and Penance on Sept. 14 th (Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross) We are asked to fast, pray, and perform works of mercy. We will also be having a special Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (time to be determined) to pray for the victims of abuse and scandal, and for the reform of the Church. There will be Holy Hour at the Cathedral at 11:30am. St. Joseph Prayer for Protection & Renewal of the Church To you, St. Joseph we bring our broken hearts and all of the discouragement that weighs us down. Impurity and scandal have wounded our Church and have brought much shame, sorrow and tears. We ask you dearest St. Joseph, to be our guide along this very dark path, for you are the model of faith, purity and devotion that we need so desperately. May the Lord send forth the burning fire of the Holy Spirit, and renew the face of the Church, and the world. O St. Joseph, pray ceaselessly for the Church during this time of suffering and great mourning. May this current pain inflicted upon the Church be transformed by the power of Christ s cross, and lead to further renewal and continued purification. Amen. RESPONSES TO THE SCANDAL from our Pope, our local bishop, and our pastor can be found in the lobby table by the display case.

RCIA WELCOMING OTHERS TO SHARE OUR JOURNEY OF FAITH The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which the church community accompanies and mentors those wanting to know about the Catholic faith or desiring to become Catholic. You might think, what an odd name. Why have in the title The Rite of? It would make much more sense without those words. But we use rite because as Catholics, we are a liturgical religion. Central to our life is worshiping and praising God through Jesus Christ. It is in our worship, that we are attentive to the movement of God in our lives and respond to our encounter with God in worship by how we live our lives. We don t just think about God and respond. We encounter God in our worship and that moves us to respond with love. The Rite of Christian Initiation celebrates various movements of deepening faith and conversion to Christ. The RCIA process uses the parish community, a RCIA team, and sponsors to guide our inquirers to this deeper faith journey, climaxing in the celebration of sacraments. The RCIA journey has been compared to a courtship: the initial attraction to the faith, followed by a period of intentional dating and discernment, leading to full commitment and communion. During that time, the catechumens (those never baptized) and candidates (Christians seeking full communion in the Church) reflect deeply about their search for God and the encounter with Christ made available to them in the Catholic Church. Our meetings are on Thursdays at 7:30pm.The RCIA team looks forward to welcoming all who are interested in learning about the faith. We need your help! First of all, share information about the RCIA with those you know who have shown an interest in the Church. Invite them better still, bring them! Secondly, please consider becoming a sponsor for one of the catechumens/candidates. The duties of the sponsor include joining them frequently at the RCIA meetings, and being available to connect them to how Catholics live out their faith. It is also a wonderful way to renew your own understanding of and commitment to the faith. Thirdly, keep all us in your prayers as we undertake this important missionary task. If you have questions about how you can become involved with the RCIA, please contact Susan at rcia@calnewman.org - RCIA Team (Susan Cass, Fr. Steve, Stela Almanza, Brett Furnas, Matt Hauwiller, and Debbie Tatto)
