TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PROMISES Today s liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God s will makes us family with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise ourselves to believe really believe that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise ourselves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to one another as well. We have from God, an eternal dwelling in heaven. 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 TODAY S READINGS First Reading After Adam and Eve eat of the forbidden fruit, the LORD God puts enmity between the serpent and the woman (Genesis 3:9-15). Psalm With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption (Psalm 130). Second Reading We have an eternal dwelling from God, not made with hands (2 Corinthians 4:13 5:1). Gospel Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother (Mark 3:20-35). FATHER S DAY OBSERVANCE NEXT SUNDAY, JUNE 17 th In the United States, Father s Day is a celebration that honors Fathers and Fatherhood and the wonderful influence of Fathers in our society. This coming Father s Day, as we make time to remember the love and many sacrifices of our Fathers and Grandfathers, let us also pause to say a prayer for all of them, both living and deceased. ST. CATHARINE S CHILDREN S CHOIR AT SPECIAL FATHER S DAY MASS NEXT SUNDAY, JUNE 17 th, 9:30 AM Please join us as we honor our Fathers in this very special way. Our Family Mass and the Children s Choir will break for the Summer and will return in the Fall. We will need your support in order to continue this ministry to our young families. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Anne Pagnani at map807@aol.com. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION FATHER S DAY INTENTIONS Today s Second Collection is for Father s Day Intentions. AN EVENING OF SONG & PRAYER TO HONOR OUR LADY OF FATIMA THIS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13 th, 7:00 PM Please join us in the Church to honor Our Lady of Fatima with a wonderful Evening of Song and Prayer. The beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be with us for the month of June so that our parishioners and others may come and spend quiet time in prayer. We will recite the Rosary in her honor each morning at 9:00 AM, Monday through Saturday during the month of June. Let s all heed Our Lady s request, as well as, Pope Francis s plea to pray a daily Rosary for Peace. OUR LADY OF FATIMA THE SECOND APPARITION, JUNE 13 th The second encounter of Our Lady to the three shepherd children took place on the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua, June 13 th. (You may think St. Anthony is from Italy, but he was actually born in Lisbon, Portugal and his Feast Day is very important to the Portuguese.) On this occasion, Our Lady asked the children to pray the Rosary daily. After each one of the mysteries, my children, I want you to pray in this way: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fire of hell. Take all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need. She promised to take Jacinta and Francesco to Heaven soon. In fact, Francisco and Jacinta died in 1919 and 1920, respectively, a year after the apparitions. Lucia would live to the age of 97, dying in 2005. To Lucia, she gave the mission of remaining in the world to establish devotion to Her Immaculate Heart. She promised Lucia: My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God. Our Lady gave the children another vision of God and revealed to them, in the palm of her right hand, her Immaculate Heart, surrounded by thorns, saddened by the sins of humanity and seeking reparation for them. The young children spoke of Mary s beauty, her kindness, and especially of the wonderful light that shone all about her. They knew that she was from Heaven, and they perceived the light she radiated was from God Himself. The children were not frightened by her; rather, they felt the joy and security of a mother s love. And, in her presence, they sensed the presence and the love of God. From the first apparition to the last, the children experienced Mary s tender love for them. BIRTHRIGHT BABY BOTTLE DRIVE ENDS TODAY From humble beginnings, Birthright of Rockland County in Nanuet, has grown into a charitable pregnancy care center with over 50 wonderful volunteers putting in countless hours of dedicated service to pregnant women and their babies. Their ministry is a loving, gentle one. If you have ever thought of volunteering, please give them a call at (845) 623-9098. May God bless our mothers, mothers-to be and their babies. ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA FEAST DAY JUNE 13 Why do people pray to St. Anthony to find lost items? St. Anthony should be the patron of those who find their lives completely uprooted and set in a new and unexpected direction. Like all saints, he is a perfect example of turning one s life completely over to Christ. God did with Anthony as God pleased and what God pleased was a life of spiritual power and brilliance that still attracts admiration today. He whom popular devotion has nominated as finder of lost objects found himself by losing himself totally to the providence of God. Though he died at the age of 36, Anthony of Padua stands as one of the Church s greatest saints for his effectiveness in inspiring holiness in people. Untold numbers of people turn to him, still, when there is loss. And strangely, at least strangely in the usual ways of the world, those things often quickly turn up. And, often they turn up in the most unexpected and even seemingly miraculous ways. So, how did St. Anthony, most known for his skill at preaching, become associated with finding lost things? When he was teaching friars, Anthony had a book of psalms that was very important and valuable to him. A young man who was learning the life of the Franciscans had decided to run away from the monastery. He stole Anthony s book of psalms on the way out, knowing that he could sell it and receive a large sum of money. The book contained Anthony s notes for his preaching, so the Saint prayed for its return and for the conversion of the young man. The young man had a change of heart and came back to the monastery, where he returned Anthony s book and continued his formation as a Franciscan. The stolen book is said to be preserved in the Franciscan Friary in Bologna. Following is a traditional prayer to St. Anthony Dear St. Anthony, You are the patron of the poor and the helper of all who seek lost articles. Help me to find the object I have lost so that I will be able to make better use of the time I will gain for God s greater honor and glory. Grant your gracious aid to all people who seek what they have lost especially those who seek to regain God s grace.
