The Order of Service for the Lord s Day As people enter the sanctuary, they are encouraged to greet one another and share the gifts of friendship and love. When the prelude begins, all are invited to begin personal preparation for worship. As a kindness to fellow worshippers, please silence all electronic devices. = Congregation Standing as Able = Appropriate times to be Seated when Arriving After Service Begins ~ We Gather Together as God's People ~ THE ORGAN PRELUDE I Call to You, Lord Jesus Christ... J.S. Bach (1685-1750) THE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (Please pass the guest pads.) THE GATHERING SONG NO. 701: Lord, Prepare Me (sung twice)... SANCTUARY The Sanctuary Choir & Congregation Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving, I ll be a living sanctuary for you. THE CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsive)... Barbara Hardy, Liturgist ONE: O God, we seek you, and our souls thirst for you. ALL: Our flesh faints for the Lord, as in a dry and weary land. ONE: O God, your steadfast love is better than life itself! ALL: Let us bless the Lord as long as we live, lift up our hands and call on God s name. ONE: Let us worship our almighty God! THE OPENING PRAYER... Barbara Hardy, Liturgist THE HYMN NO. 816: If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee... WER NUR DEN LIEBEN GOTT THE CALL TO CONFESSION THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Spoken in unison) Holy God, we confess that we have grown complacent in our response to you. You set before us a rich feast of blessing, but we are drawn to lesser things that cannot satisfy. You call us to attend to urgent needs in the world, but we indulge our own desires. Our ways are not your ways; our thoughts do not ascend to your thoughts. Forgive us when we fall short of your claim upon our lives. Disturb our complacency and quicken our desire for a more fruitful life. Be patient, we pray, as we amend who we are, in the hope of becoming who you intend us to be. We ask this in the name of our Savior, your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Concluding with the Kyrie) THE ASSURANCE OF GOD S FORGIVENESS THE GLORIA NO. 39: Great Is Thy Faithfulness (Verse 3)... FAITHFULNESS Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

THE PASSING OF THE PEACE (Spoken Responsively) ONE: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. ALL: And also with you. (Children in K-5 are dismissed to go to Children s Church) ~ The Word of the Lord ~ THE PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION... Barbara Hardy, Liturgist THE FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON: Psalm 63:1-8... Barbara Hardy, Liturgist O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call on your name. My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips when I think of you on my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. THE CHORAL ANTHEM: Hymn of Promise... Natalie Sleeth The Sanctuary Choir THE SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON: Luke 13:1-9... The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did. Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil? He replied, Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down. ONE: This is the Word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God. THE SERMON: Asking Why... The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore ~ We Respond to the Word ~ THE HYMN OF RESPONSE NO. 435: There s a Wideness in God s Mercy... IN BABILONE THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH... The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD'S PRAYER (Spoken in Unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen. THE OFFERING OF GIFTS... Bobby Gentry, Greeting Elder THE ORGAN OFFERTORY: Whiter than Snow... arr. Albin Whitworth THE DOXOLOGY NO. 612: We Praise you, O God (Verse 1)... LASST UNS ERFREUEN We praise, you O God, our Redeemer, Creator; In grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before you; we kneel and adore you; We bless your holy name, glad praises we sing. THE PRAYER OF DEDICATION... News Around Outer Banks Presbyterian Church! Adult Sunday School Currently, we are taking a break from Psalms and instead are pursuing a Lenten study based on the book Be Holy by the Rev. Brian Coulter. This book shows us what it means to be holy in today's world and how living into this calling helps us discover and develop our sense of identity, belonging, and purpose. We will have copies of a Lenten devotional guide based on Be Holy at class. Scholarship Apps Due Graduating high school seniors who are members of OBPC and/or members of the Youth Group, are eligible for scholarships to help support their continuing education at institutions of higher learning. Applications are available on the church's website. The deadline for turning them in is tomorrow, March 25. Scholarship Fund OBPC has a scholarship fund from which we award scholarships to graduating seniors for higher education. We invite anyone who would like to support this initiative to make a gift to the fund. To do so, make your check payable to Outer Banks Presbyterian Church and write Scholarship Fund on the memo line. Relay for Life: Service of Hope On Sunday afternoon, March 31, at 4:00 pm, Outer Banks Presbyterian Church will host the Dare County Relay for Life Service of Hope. Several area ministers as well as a community choir will participate in this celebration of HOPE in the fight against cancer. Individuals will be given the opportunity to purchase a luminary for $10.00 prior to the service In Honor Of or In Memory Of a loved one. Wednesday Lenten Worship Service Schedule Outer Banks Presbyterian has proudly hosted community Lenten Services sponsored by the Dare County Ministerial Association for many years. The services began on Ash Wednesday, March 6, at 12:00 noon and will continue through April 17. There is a service in the sanctuary followed by a light lunch in the fellowship hall. The cost of the lunch is $5.00 and the proceeds go to the Beach Food Pantry. All are invited to these services of music and reflection. The remaining schedule for the 2019 Lenten season is as follows: March 27 The Rev. Tanta Luckhardt-Hendricks, Retired Lunch by Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church April 3 The Rev. Keith Dey From Emmanuel Lutheran Church Lunch by Holy Redeemer Catholic Church April 10 Chaplain Cherri Wheeler From Kitty Hawk Baptist Church Lunch by Kitty Hawk Baptist April 17 The Rev. Spottswood Graves From Calvary Presbyterian, Swan Quarter Lunch by St. Andrews Episcopal Church Next Week s Sermon Luke 15:11-32. Jesus tells us the well-known parable of the Prodigal Son and his Older Brother. The younger brother wastes away his life and squanders his inheritance making poor decisions. The older brother is unable to open his heart and show compassion to his brother. Both brothers have sinned. The father, who represents God, still loves and embraces both brothers with open arms. Even when our sin distances ourselves from God, our Lord always welcomes us back home and offers us grace!

Church Staff Welcome to the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church. Our Church exists to worship God in Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament; to join others to know the joy of God s forgiveness in Jesus Christ; to grow under the Lordship of Christ and to serve Christ s world in His name. We invite you to share with us our trust in Jesus Christ and to join us as we strive to: Grow and strengthen our FAITH, Love and support our FAMILY, Reach out to our FRIENDS in need. We encourage you to read Sue s Story, the inspiration behind these goals in its entirety, on our website, on a brochure in the Gathering Space or on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. We hope you will be inspired as we have been. At OBPC, we recognize all of our visitors as God s children, united as brothers and sisters in Christ. We hope our service inspires you and strengthens your faith. We hope you will join us again in celebration and worship to God. If you are interested in becoming a member or would like to know more about our church or any of our programs, please contact us! Our church believes providing worship for visitors is a vital part of our mission. Our building was planned to accommodate the many visitors who come to this vacation community. This places an additional financial challenge on our resident membership. We need and welcome financial support from our visitors. One way to give to the church is to make online donations via the link on our website: www.outerbankspresbyterian.org.
