5 th Sunday in Pentecost June 24, 2018 prelude Confession and forgiveness Deacon Welcome to CGS this morning Pastor God, your Spirit, moved over the misty waters of creation, filled the lungs of your humans, empowered the prophetic voices of Israel, was the sustaining gift of a resurrected Christ, and calls ordinary people to live extraordinary lives. Holy Spirit, you have gifted us with the power to perform miracles and be your witnesses here and to the ends of the earth. Yet we stand so often convicted that we are inadequate, fearful of our own failings and sin. song FORGIVENESS WALTZ Forgive us when we try to limit your power and underestimate your capabilities. Forgive us when we fail to open our hearts full to the opportunities you present us. 1

Pastor Children of God, it is my privilege to remind you that you are forgiven and made whole in the name of the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Sustainer. Amen! 2

Song GREAT IS THE LORD 3

song THE GREAT COMFORTER DESCEND greeting & prayer of the day Pastor 4 The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you!

Deacon Let s pray (hold a brief silence for preparation) O Creator We pray in this in the name of the one who calmed the raging sea, Jesus the Christ Amen. readings Reader Our first reading this morning is from Job 1 The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: 2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? 8 Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? 9 when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10 and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, 11 and said, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped? Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God. 5

Reader The good news of Jesus Christ from the Gospel of Mark 35 When evening had come, Jesus said to the disciples, Let us go across to the other side. 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God. sermon 6

prayers of the people Deacon Deacon Deacon Growing in faith and discipleship, we give thanks for God s merciful compassion as we pray for the church, the world, and all in need. God in your mercy, Hear our prayer For what else do the people of God pray? Here we invite you to offer up any prayers that might weigh on your heart or speak to your life. Deacon Gracious God, we lift to you these prayers and the prayers of our hearts, trusting in your everlasting love and mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen passing of the peace Pastor The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you. You are invited to share a sign of peace with one another through a handshake, fist bump, hug or any move that respects one another s bodies and personal boundaries. Asking permission is always encouraged and make us feel good. We often say Peace be with you when we greet one another. Announcements & offering We collect a portion of what God has given us (our time, our wealth, our gifts) for the sustenance of the whole community, with particular focus on those with the greatest need. You can also give online at www.cgslc.org/donate 8

CHRIST HAS NO BODY NOW BUT YOURS Please sing as we collect the offering 9

offering prayer Deacon Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen the great thanksgiving Pastor Pastor Pastor God be with you And also with you Lift up your hearts in joy We lift our hearts up to God Let s give thanks to God together Blessed are you, O God of the universe. In the beginning, your Spirit brooded over the primordial waters, bringing forth the life of everything you have declared good. That same Spirit, your own breath, you breathed into our lungs at birth, as you declared each and every human being your own very good creation. 10

By that same Spirit, in whirlwind and tower of flame, you led your people Israel from captivity to freedom, through the wilderness and into the Promised Land. That Spirit descended upon your Son at Baptism and led him into the wilderness to prepare him for his own ministry of liberation. He was lifted up on the cross to draw all people to himself, to make us truly free. Words of Institution With this bread and cup, we remember that even death could not hold our Lord captive, we remember that Christ broke death itself to open the way to eternal life for your whole beloved creation. And so we proclaim with joy and boldness the gift of God s grace. 11

Fill us with your life-giving presence as we share this feast. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us. Bind us together as your Body and send us out to proclaim your gospel of love in ways our friends and neighbors will find meaningful and healing. Equip us with every gift we need to be your Pentecost church today. the lord s prayer You are invited to pray in the language of your own choosing. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Just as Christ welcomes all people, all people are welcome at Christ s table here at CGS. We invite you to share communion regardless of your age, race, creed, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, social status, or ability. There are gluten free wafers for those who need them. The silver chalices contain red wine. The ceramic chalices contain white grape juice. If you wish to receive a blessing in lieu of grain and grape, let the pastor know when you come forward. They will be happy to give you a blessing. 12
