FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 10, 2019 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *HYMN OF INVOCATION Drawn to the Cross, Which Thou Hast Blessed LSB 560 1. Drawn to the Cross, which Thou hast blessed With healing gifts for souls distressed, To find in Thee my life, my rest, Christ Crucified, I come. 2. Thou knowest all my griefs and fears, Thy grace abused, my misspent years; Yet now to Thee with contrite tears, Christ Crucified, I come. 3. Wash me and take away each stain; Let nothing of my sin remain. For cleansing, though it be through pain, Christ Crucified, I come. 4. And then for work to do for Thee, Which shall so sweet a service be That angels well might envy me, Christ Crucified, I come. 10:30 Green Park Choir Our God is Real and Present Here Jeffrey E. Burkart Come Let Us Reason Ken Medema *INVOCATION AND CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. L: As a father has compassion on his children so the Lord has compassion on those who love Him. C: The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. L: Almighty God, our heavenly Father: C: We have often strayed from Your ways and followed the desires of our own hearts. We have sinned against You and against one another. We have done the evil Your Word forbids. We often have not done the good Your Word requires. According to Your mercy, given us through Christ, forgive our sins. Grant us Your Spirit, that we may live in godliness, love, and faithfulness, all the days of our lives. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION C: Amen. *THE GLORIA PATRI C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

*THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. C: Amen. THE FIRST READING for the first Sunday in Lent is from Deuteronomy 26:1-11, page 167: 1 When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the LORD your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. 3 And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our fathers to give us. 4 Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God. 5 And you shall make response before the LORD your God, A wandering Aramean was my father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. 6 And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. 7 Then we cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. 9 And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O LORD, have given me. And you shall set it down before the LORD your God and worship before the LORD your God. 11 And you shall rejoice in all the good that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 5:00 Chancel Choir God Loved the World So That He Gave Benjamin M. Culli THE EPISTLE READING is from Romans 10:8b-11, page 946: 8 The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - according to St. Luke, the fourth chapter, verses 1-13, page 859: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone. 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. 8 And Jesus answered him, It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. 9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, 11 and On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answered him, It is said, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

*THE APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. CHILDREN S SONG (Sung as the children come forward) (8:00 & 10:30) 1. Glory be to Jesus, Who in bitter pains Poured for me the life-blood From His sacred veins! 2. Grace and life eternal In that blood I find; Blest be His compassion, Infinitely kind! CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (8:00 & 10:30) Marilyn Wiesehan HYMN OF THE DAY Approach, My Soul, the Mercy-Seat TLH 456 1. Approach, my soul, the mercy-seat Where Jesus answers prayer; There humbly fall before His feet, For none can perish there. 2. Bowed down beneath a load of sin, By Satan sorely pressed, By wars without and fears within, I come to Thee for rest. 3. Be Thou my Shield and Hiding-place, That, sheltered near Thy side, I may my fierce Accuser face And tell him Thou hast died. 4.
