The Messenger St. Mark s Evangelical Lutheran Church A Heritage of God s Grace Since 1910 May 2017 WELCA Spring Brunch The theme of the annual WELCA Mother, Sister, Daughter, and Friend Brunch is The Promise of Spring and New Life. Please bring guests and join us for fellowship and food at the church on Saturday May 6th, 2017 from 10 am to noon. Our program will feature music by Intern David Adams. A signup sheet will be posted in the narthex. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reception for Dave Adams Sunday, May 7 th 10:40 am A reception will be held for Dave Adams following worship on Sunday, May 7 th. Please join us as we show our appreciation to Dave for the time he has spent with us, first, as our interim pastor, and then during his internship. Dave will be graduating from Luther Seminary on May 21 st, and leaving St. Mark s the end of May. St. Mark s is grateful for the time that we were able to have Dave minister to the congregation and we will miss him. And, we want to wish him well! The reception is sponsored by WELCA.

A Message from Our Intern Pastor It s hard for me to believe that it is already May of 2017. When I first came to be among you in September of 2015, it felt exciting to imagine the amount of time we were going to have together, and to dream about the possibilities we would experience together. And now, here we are, at the end of my time with you, and I look back and wonder where the time went. What have we done together during this time? I could answer this by listing off things like replaced our boiler, studied the book of Revelation, packed 3,350 lunches for children in Grand Forks, and much more. But, more importantly, what we have done was shared life together. You have all been a rich blessing to me, and I am grateful for the life you have shared with me. As we enter into my final month with you, I want to keep sharing life together. One way I want to do this is by offering a final Bible study with you. Starting on Monday, May 1 st, I will host a 3-week study on the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke. There will be two opportunities for you to participate each week, either at 9:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. We will meet on May 1 st, May 8 th, and May 15 th. The Gospel of Luke is, perhaps, the most well-known of the four Gospel accounts because of the dramatic narrative of the birth of Jesus Christ. However, important themes can easily be overlooked when dynamic story telling overpowers meaning, cultural significance, and implications for faithful living. Furthermore, we can all agree this is true with Luke because of the nostalgic energy that our own hearts feel whenever we read and hear the exciting story of angels and shepherds singing praises to a baby in a manger. A deeper examination of this prophetic Gospel reveals that this good story points to God s promise to be faithful to all of humanity, including those who are seen as outcasts (poor, old, young, weak, etc.). Also, one of the most important things to keep in mind when reading Luke is the importance of Jewish customs, teachings, prophecies, and hopes during the time of the Gospel. The story of Jesus shows that Jesus was, in fact, a knowledgeable Jew, with a full understanding of the Scriptures. What are some of the themes that we can easily overlook when reading this Gospel? What lessons can we learn from the faithful people of Jesus time? What implications do these lessons have for us today, as we put more ink into God s story for humanity? These are all some of the questions we will discuss in our time together. So PLEASE join me during the final month of my time with you, as we continue to share life, grounded in the promise of faith we have in Jesus. I look forward to our time together. Peace, Dave Adams

From Your Stewardship Committee - - - Stewardship Nuggets We have just celebrated Easter and the joyous resurrection of Jesus! As we continue to ponder the meaning of Jesus sacrifice for us, let us, as disciples of Christ, also consider how we might live sacrificially. Jesus shows us that God s way is the way of self-giving, sacrificial love. To follow Jesus way is to empty ourselves, to give beyond what we think is possible, and to do so willingly. As stewards of God s kingdom on Earth, let us walk in Jesus self-emptying way, loving and caring for all our brothers and sister. The Stewardship Committee, Tom, Mark, Brad, and Patrick

MISSIONS REPORT God s Work, Our Hands ----------------------------------------------------- **On April 2 nd the seventh annual Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) event was held in Grand Forks. FMSC, founded in 1987, is a Christian non-profit that provides nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. This year 435,456 meals were packed which will feed 1193 children for a year! This program not only provides a critical need, but the activity of packing meals for a great cause, is an enriching experience. St. Marks not only provided 30 volunteers, but collected $1117.00. Abiding Memorials provided $500 and the remaining $617 came from donations and love offerings at Lenten suppers. Thanks to all who participated. **Based on overwhelming response, we will again participate in The Back Pack Program. This program supplements weekend meals to kids who during the summer, may not have enough to eat. It is difficult to imagine hunger in our community, but the need is real. Our hands filling these bags, play and integral role in supporting this program. Over the last several years we have packed approximately 3600 bags enough for 7200 meals! Mark your calendars we have scheduled our packings for June 6 th, June 20 th and July 5 th. All dates will start at 6:30 at the church. A sign-up sheet will be available in May. **Every spring, trees begin to display new leaves. In contrast, the leaves on our Mission Tree in our narthex remind us that our work at St. Marks not only occurs in the spring but in the summer and fall and even in the depths of winter. God s work at St. Marks continues and never ends! MaaSAE School For many years, the Women of St. Mark s have given a scholarship for a girl to attend the MaaSAE Girls Lutheran Secondary School in Monduli, Tanzania. For two years, Edith E. Thobias is the girl who is receiving the scholarship. She has sent letters of appreciation and tells of her progress in class work. With the letter which was recently received, she has sent a picture of herself. They are posted in the narthex. When WELCA first funded a girl, a scholarship was $500 which WELCA funded entirely. The cost of a year s education scholarship has risen to $1,000 recently. For the past couple of years, the Abiding Memorial Committee has matched the $500 from WELCA so the full scholarship has continued to be made. The secondary school which was started by Lutheran missionary, Pastor David Simonson, is giving young girls the opportunity to be educated in a Christian facility. Some girls who have graduated secondary school have now completed higher education and are serving/working in various fields. On the mission table, there are pamphlets regarding the recent MaaSAEs who have completed nurses training. It is thrilling and heart-warming to know the scholarships which have been provided by members of St. Mark s are making an impact in the lives of young women in Africa. Mission Committee - Elton, Miles, Deb, Cheryl and Olive
