THE OPEN DOOR LAKEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) An Open Door to a Vital Faith Souper Bowl Of Caring Our Souper Bowl of Caring offering will be received this coming Sunday, February 3, Super Bowl Sunday. It will go to Caritas as decided by our Missions Group. Our youth and children will receive our offerings as we leave worship on Sunday. Please make all checks payable to Lakewood Christian Church. Our Mission Group is also asking us to bring canned goods that will be given to Caritas to help stock their shelves. A simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat" is inspiring a youthled movement to help hungry and hurting people around the world. This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then a seminary intern serving at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, gave birth to an idea. Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy? Youth could collect donations at their schools and churches in soup pots, and then send every dollar DIRECTLY to a local charity of THEIR choice. The senior high youth of Spring Valley Presbyterian liked the idea so much they decided to invite other area churches to join the team. Twenty-two Columbia churches participated that first year, reporting their results so a total could be determined, and then sending all $5,700 they had raised to area non-profits. That was 1990. Since then, ordinary young people have generated an extraordinary more than $100 million for soup kitchens, food banks and other charities in communities across the country. In addition, hundreds of thousands of youth have experienced for themselves the joy and satisfaction of giving and serving, inspiring people of all ages to follow their generous example. An Email from Sue McDougal in response to Prayer Concerns: This winter's flu, RSV, pneumonia season is hard-hitting here in Fort Worth. I'm sorry to hear it is no better in Waco, I'll keep all these folks in my prayers. Please take precautions for yourself when you are visiting. May the healing powers of Christ abide with you, and with all who are in need! Did I tell you I'm doing another interim? I'm at River Oaks Christian Church, in River Oaks, Texas, a western suburb of Fort Worth. Sweet folks! Enjoying myself. Their interim pastor was in a car wreck and sustained some serious injuries so gave the interim up. Congregation is in the Profile stage of their search so I shouldn't be here long. Then I'll be glad to have time to get back with my grandchildren. Ashley is feeling like she needs some help. Blessings!
