As I sat in my office this week ready to write my bulletin article, I couldn't help but to keep thinking about the Bethel Bakery cake box sitting in the conference room waiting to be opened and enjoyed at lunch. I remembers that awesome smell of chocolate cake permeating throughout the halls of The Little Sisters of the Poor the day I visited my mom as they prepared for their annual Rock-a Thon. It got me to thinking about the Sunday morning I was enjoying a piece of a delicious Betty Crocker, Red Velvet cake (my favorite) that a parishioner shared with me. Did you know that when the Betty Crocker Company first began selling there cake mixes, they offered a product which only needed water. All women had to do was add water to the mix, which came in the box, and you would get a perfect, delicious cake every time. Surprisingly, it flopped. Women were not buying the mixes it and the company couldn t understand why, so they did a study and the results were surprising. It seemed that people weren t buying the cake mix because it was too easy. They felt that they were not doing enough in the preparing of the cake to call it their own or call it homemade. The women wanted to feel that they were contributing something to it. So, Betty Crocker changed the formula and required the customer to add an egg in addition to water. Instantly, the new cake mix was a huge success. As I flipped through the channels early that Sunday morning while enjoying the cake, catching glimpses of various TV Evangelists, I couldn't help but feel that what they were presenting or selling was so easily and neatly packaged. It was religion or faith with a little water added. Sadly, unlike the women of the 1950 s who did not want a cake mix that was too easy, too many people today seem to shop around for a faith that is neatly packaged and very simple. The less they have to do, the better. A faith-mix with very flashy packaging requiring very little be done by the individual. A pre-packaged faith that requires very few, if any directions to be followed and requiring nothing physical, spiritual or emotional to be added to the mix by the buyer or believer. Unfortunately, many people continue to make the same mistake when it comes to our faith. It can be so easy to look for a faith-mix that requires little if anything from us but expecting to enjoy a perfect faith that, like a good cake, satisfies and provides pleasure. What I love the most about our Catholic faith is that it requires us to add a lot of ourselves, physically, emotionally and spiritually in order to experience and enjoy the rewards. God has provided us with a beautifully packaged church. Jesus provides us, through the Holy Gospels, the directions on what we must add ourselves, exactly how much and by what method to incorporate it all. Like any good baker, we must add personal ingredients and a great deal of love and effort to the faith that the Lord has provided for us. When we do, we and so many others get to experience and enjoy the final result, an eternal banquet in heaven. Somethings are just wonderful like red velvet cake and the love of family and friends to share it with. Fr. JOIN THE PARISH New Parishioner Registration Form NAME: ADDRESS: PHONE: ( ) EMAIL : COMMENT: Dear Parish Family, FREEDOM!! When I think of freedom ringing out loud and clear my mind sees Mel Gibson in his character William Wallace screaming out his last word as he dies for something that everyone is yearning for but most people never have! Freedom is something that we all want, and yet many of us have been taught the wrong definition of freedom by our culture. That is the way Satan works. He always twists the truth just enough to make it lead us in the wrong direction. This false definition reads, freedom is the ability to do whatever we want. Is that really freedom? How many people who do whatever they want are truly happy? I have not found any. Those who are truly free do not suffer from terrible anxieties, oppressive self-centeredness, or habitual mortal sins. The people I know who are truly free are filled with joy, love, peace, patience, kindness, self-control, and vibrate life! These people do not get all these things from doing whatever they want. No! They are truly free! Thomas Aquinas tells us that freedom is the ability to do what is right and good! Sin enslaves us, Jesus frees us! It is those who are obedient to the truth who are truly free! (John 8) If you feel bound by sin even if you have been Catholic for years, I would recommend reading the book Unbound by Neal Lazono. Just two week ago I experienced a truly life changing unbinding while I was on retreat in Florida, and I can tell you that this is real! This book speaks to the freedom that is for all the children of God! Sin no longer has power over us, so let us claim our freedom in Christ and experience it today! Freedom typically comes after receiving extended prayer. When the book is read, feel free to shoot me an email to arrange an Unbound prayer session. This ministry is spreading in our diocese and I will do my best to connect you to the right people at the right time. Be blessed! In Christ Fr. Levi FESTIVAL RIDE TICKETS Festival Ride Tickets will be sold after all the Masses this weekend at a discounted price of $10 a stripe of ten tickets. Also additional Grand Raffle tickets will also be available. Invite someone to Mass next weekend! Cut out the invita on below To: From: This is a personal and hear elt invita on from me and my family of Holy Apostles Parish to come and join us each weekend at Church. Will you come and pray with us? WE ARE SAVING A SEAT FOR YOU!

KEEP THIS DATE OPEN By Deacon Tim Confessions is the name of the work by St Augustine of Hippo that was written between 397 AD and 400 AD. This autobiographical work shows Augustine's conversion from his self-indulgent youth to his conversion to Christianity. Most scholars generally rank Confessions among the greatest works of western literature. Again, Confessions is a collection of thirteen books. For example, in Book 1, Augustine tells us of his infancy and boyhood, up to age fifteen. Augustine admits that he was far more inclined to youthful pleasures and to anything else. In Book 6, from the discourses of St Ambrose, Augustine discovers the truth of Catholic doctrine. In Book 7, Augustine; looks back on his life and the very grave errors her made earlier in his life and he comes to a better understanding of knowledge of God, but not yet a good understanding of Jesus. Through these, and all thirteen books, the readers encounters literature and an appreciation of the wisdom, candor and impressive writing style of one of the greatest influences of our Catholic Faith. I give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards because of the straight forward manner in which Augustine addresses his life and the steps of his conversion to God. When he sinned, he sinned greatly. When he converted, his conversion was even greater. You would be surprised if you knew how many inmates I have given this book to read at the jail and the thoughtful discussions that I have had with each of them about this famous book. Do yourself a favor and read this book for yourself. In it, you will find a treasure that been read and enjoyed for over sixteen hundred years. Love Jesus in our hearts.. June Festival of Praise The theme of the June Festival of Praise was Renewing Our Baptismal Calling. Fr. Levi opened the evening by saying that we need transformed so the world can be transformed. The world needs hope and people are feeling lost, but Christ brings love, joy and peace. We need to know that the Holy Spirit is God. Fr. Levi quoted St. Teresa of Avila, You can t pray if you don t know who you re talking to. Donna Yantz was the night s witness speaker. She related how coming to the Festival of Praise changed her life and started her spiritual renewal. With her sister s encouragement, she attended for the first time last year. There was a lot of ugliness in the world at that time and she felt her life as a Catholic was like a bonfire that was beginning to dwindle. Upon attending her first FOP, she was inspired by the people there, specifically four teenage girls who were sitting in front of her. She began attending every month and realized the joy from knowing Jesus Christ. The Festival of Praise helped her to acknowledge what was happening inside her. The Holy Spirit opened her to the gifts of peace, joy, and love. She closed by saying how touched she is by the people who have helped her on her faith journey, specifically her family, husband, the general faith community, and fellow Festival of Praise attendees. Fr. Tom Galvin was the presider and homilist. He said that every time we receive a sacrament, it points us back to our baptism, which is the fullness of God s life. Baptism wraps us in God s calling and every second of the day is a moment of grace. He recalled the prayer during the sacrament of Baptism for the spirit of God to make them temples of your glory, and stated that this is what our Baptismal calling is about. God wants us to open up to His gifts of spirit and truth. Our Baptismal calling is renewed at Confirmation, when we have the maturity to grow in God s gifts. We must invite the Holy Spirit to help us enter into the love that is God. Fr. Tom asked us to contemplate what we are doing to continue the renewal by using the gifts from the Spirit for the glory of God. We can show the world what God s love is all about. Following Eucharistic Adoration and procession, the evening ended with the Praise Band leading us in singing Song of Hope. Saturday July 14, 2018 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM We are pleased to welcome Father Tom Galvin back as presider and inspirational speaker. We also welcome Patricia McCullough a judge of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania, as witness speaker. Judge McCullough was previously Executive Director of Catholic Charities here in Pittsburgh. Jesus offers so much and He is always there for us with open arms. We only need to turn to Him and ask for his guidance and love. Father Galvin and Judge McCullough will share their thoughts, experiences and insight on Receiving God s Gifts. Our Festival of Praise is a beautiful opportunity for us to offer praise to Jesus and receive His love as His beloved children. Visit the Festival of Praise page on the parish website where you will find links to many of the songs that are in our Praise Band repertoire. Plans to give you a future full of hope. (Jer. 29:11) As we move toward the changes that are coming in October, we can be sure that the plans God has for us are designed for our blessing, for good not for evil. God has plans for us as individuals, he has plans for our parish, and plans for the wellbeing of our diocese and Church as a whole. What comfort and security we have in this promise. Our challenge is to act on the knowledge that God has a special place for us in his overall plan. Realizing this gives us hope for the future. Spend just a little time each day and meditate and pray around this verse. Realize how helpless we are without him in our life and begin to entrust your life into God s powerful yet loving hands (I know many of you already do). Let all your negative thoughts melt away. Let your attitudes rise to meet his expectations of us. We truly do have a bright and glorious future wrapped in God s plans for us. Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent ST.
