OUR COMMUNITY GIFT FOR FEBRUARY A portion of this month s collection will go to support East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, who offer sanctuary, advocacy, and legal services to those escaping war, exploitation, and other expressions of violence. AS YOU PLAN YOUR WILL, there will always be others after us who will need the spiritual support of Newman, especially future CAL students. Your foresight can make the difference for a future generation in need.

A N N O U N C E M E N T S RCIA DETAILS-Last Sunday, our new members of the Elect, (who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil) and the Candidates who will receive Eucharist and Confirmation at the Vigil, signed the Book of the Elect. It was signed by the Bishop in a ceremony at the Cathedral, and it will remain in the sanctuary throughout Lent, as a reminder of the journey we share with them. As another reminder of our desire to support them, please choose a name of an Elect or Candidate from the basket in the lobby, and pray for and with them throughout Lent. You can find your person s photo and story on the picture board. TRAINING FOR NEW EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS-Sunday, Feb 25 from 11:15am-12:45pm. The training session will be in the Chapel after the 10am Mass. Attendance at a training session is required in order to serve as a Eucharistic Minister. Applications are available on the table in the lobby. All are most welcome! If you have questions, contact Carol Wells at 650-438-3138 or Alfreda Campos at 510-527-3072. LOAVES & FISHES-Come and help us prepare and serve meals for the poor and homeless on the first Saturday of the month (3/3). For more information, and how to sign-up please go to: signup.com/go/wxdcmx NEWMAN FICTION GROUP-Tuesday, March 6 at 7pm. The Newman Fiction Group will meet to discuss Little Red Chairs, by Edna O Brien, in which a man from the recent war in Bosnia comes to make his home in an Irish village. For more information, please email Michael Fitzgerald at mkfitzgerald50@sbcglobal.net or call Kit Sturtevant-Stuart at 510-845-3033. WOMEN IN CONVERSATION-Saturday, March 10, 9am to Noon in the Lounge. We are very excited to have women of various backgrounds and ages accept our invitation to share their journey of faith with us. You will hear women, from young student to seniors, discuss their faith, hope, and experience of being a Catholic in our times. Philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin wrote that dialogue is a matter of communication between simultaneous differences. What a challenge this offers us! As humans we often seek others to whom we feel most similar. Yet it is our differences that allow us to contribute to our world and receive what we need from it. Please come and invite other women! Feel free to bring a snack to share and your very own coffee cup. For more information contact Peg Bogle at pegbogle@gmail.com or sgrant@seniorhelpers.com. COMMUNION MINISTRY TO the SICK and HOMEBOUND We receive requests intermittently for communion, from community members who are sick or injured and unable to come to Newman. This can be a mutually rewarding and grace-filled ministry. If you feel called to help in this way, please contact Colleen at colleenlenord@gmail.com. LECTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP-Wednesday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 14, 7:30pm-9:00pm in the Chapel. Do you feel called to be a lector, who proclaims the scriptures at Mass? The lector brings the Word of God to life for the gathered assembly-a prayerful gift of ministry to the Newman community that we share. Our Winter/Spring Lector Training Workshop will be held on Wednesday March 7 and Wednesday March 14 from 7:30pm to 9:00pm (depending on the number of people who sign up) in the Chapel. Attendance on both evenings is required to be eligible for assignment in the regular rotation. Whether you have previous lector experience or are just assessing your calling, you are welcome and will find the workshop useful. We welcome new lectors at all masses, but can especially use more lectors at the Saturday 5:00pm and Sunday 10:00pm Masses. If you have any questions, please contact workshop leader Ferdinand Ramos at (925) 209-7176. HABITAT FOR NEWMANITY-Save The Date! Saturday, April 7, 9am to Noon. Newman requires some extra TLC now and then. A work party is forming to take care of our lovable little cube of concrete and the surrounding grounds. Grab your work gloves (if you have them), grease up those elbows and let the spirit move you to lift, clip, carry, clean and make everything right on Dwight. Step one: let us know you re coming. Contact Alan at arose919@att.net or Charlie at cbogle2917@sbcglobal.net SMT LITURGY APOLOGY-On behalf of the SMT Liturgy Committee, we apologize for not having the walking Stations of the Cross on Campus last Friday, February 16 as we advertised. We will announce a future date for Stations on campus. Sorry for your inconvenience. Brandon and Ana

Pope Francis Guide for Making the Most out of 2018 (Part II) aleteia.org/2018/01/07/12-new-years-resolutions-for-12-months-from-popefrancis/#.wllih3kuxwc.facebook 7. Be strong in faith so as to overcome division When we give of ourselves, we discover our true identity as children of God in the image of the Father and, like him, givers of life; we discover that we are brothers and sisters of Jesus, to whom we bear witness. This is what it means to evangelize; this is the new revolution for our faith is always revolutionary this is our deepest and most enduring cry. (July 7, 2015, Mass in Ecuador) 8. Work hard for your dignity and that of your family Work I repeat, in its many forms is proper to the human person. It expresses the dignity of being created in the image of God. Thus, it is said that work is sacred. I rejoice greatly when I see governments go to great lengths to find jobs and try to see to it that everyone has work. Work is sacred, work gives dignity to a family. We have to pray that no family is left without work. Therefore, work too, like celebration, is part of God s creative plan. (General audience, August 19, 2015) 9. Don t let yourself be robbed of hope In the daily reality of life, there has to be room for dreaming. A young person incapable of dreaming is cut off, self-enclosed. Everyone sometimes dreams of things which are never going to happen. But dream them anyway, desire them, seek new horizons, be open to great things. (Pope Francis in Havana, Cuba, September 20, 2015) 10. Remember that God never abandons us Jesus has always shown us that God is not a severe and intolerant boss, but rather a father full of love, of tenderness, a father full of goodness. And therefore, we can and we should have an immense confidence in him. (Santa Marta homily, November 20, 2017) 11. Find happiness by creating harmony When we pass judgment on a person we create exclusion, perhaps saying: Not with this man, not with this woman, not with this one no. In doing so, we remain in our little group and we are selective, and this is not Christian. We say: No, that person is a sinner, that person did this. Jesus attitude, however, is to include. There are two possible paths: the path of excluding people from our community and the path of including. The first, though to a limited degree, is at the root of all wars: all disasters, all conflicts begin with exclusion. There is exclusion from the international community, but also from families: among friends, how many fights! Instead, the path that Jesus shows us, that he teaches us, is completely different, and it is opposed to the other: to include. (Santa Marta homily, November 5, 2015) 12. Know that you are loved, so that you can give love and forgiveness Francis compared God s love to that of a mother or father who speaks to their child after he or she has woken after a nightmare. Just as our parents reassured us, saying, don t be scared, I m here, so God says do not be afraid of your sins, I love you; I am here to forgive you. This is the mercy of God, the pope explained. We are all so nervous when something does not go according to plan; we scream and shout, we are impatient He, however, says Calm down; yes, you ve made a mistake but don t worry, don t be afraid. I forgive you. (Santa Marta homily, December 10, 2015) And finally, the Golden Rule is the best resolution for every month: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
