First Sunday in Advent Pastor s Notes December 2, 2018 ADVENT This Sunday we begin the Season of Advent, during which the Church gratefully recalls the first coming of Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, and looks forward to the Lord's second coming at the end of me. Advent is a me for spiritual growth: come to Mass during the week, pray the rosary, go to confession, and pray a li le longer in the morning or the evening. There are helpful books in the church narthex that you are most welcome to take for spiritual reading during Advent. May this season be for us a me rich in the Lord's presence and love. IMMACULATE MARY Saturday, December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obliga on. Mass will be offered on Friday, December 7 at 7:00 pm and there will be two Masses on Saturday, December 8 at 8:30 am and 11:00 am. God preserved Mary from the stain of Original Sin from the first moment of her life, and Mary never sinned because she never stopped loving God. Please join me in thanking God for the life and holiness of the Virgin Mary. HOW DO I GO TO CONFESSION? At the church entrance, you will find a booklet: "Preparing for the Sacrament of Penance." This is an easy-to-use guide that will help you review your life, examine your conscience and understand the steps of making a confession. Feel free to take a copy of the booklet, and bring it with you when you go to confession. Three versions of the Act of Contri on are included. Addi onal mes for confession are added during Advent, please see the schedule in the bulle n. NO SWEETS, PLEASE Parishioners are very though ul in showing their apprecia on to priests. But I ask that you kindly refrain from dropping off cookies or sweets for me during December and redirect those treats to a shelter or soup kitchen. The people who receive those sweets will be grateful. Thank you! THE OFFERTORY I am most grateful to everyone who supports our parish through the sharing of their me, talent and financial resources. St. Raphael is able to offer pastoral care and our various ministries thanks to your help. Please note that each weekend our dedicated ushers pass the baskets and take up two collec ons. The first me is for the Sunday collec on, and the second me is for the parish building fund and any special collec ons we are having on a par cular weekend. Your support for the building fund has helped us replace our sound system and install phase two of the HVAC system. Thanks for your support for St. Raphael! In our Lord, Fr. Mike McGovern mmcgovern@archchicago.org 2 St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church
