BAYT SAFETY & SECURITY BY JEFFREY BROWN Chair, Security Committee On behalf of the BAYT s Security Committee, we would like to remind everyone that security begins with each and every member, particularly over the High Holy Days. If you see anything or anyone suspicious or unusual, report it as soon as possible to one of the Security Guards, Police Officers or BAYT Facilities staff. There are no errors in being cautious. As in the past, this year we count on member volunteers to greet people at the entrances to the shul. Our regular uniformed security guards and York Regional Police Officers on duty at the Clark and parking lot entrances count on members for support even though they have been briefed on synagogue security. If you know that you will need a break from davening, please let me know whether you can volunteer as a door greeter. I can be reached at jmbrown@kpmg.ca. Here are some things to consider courtesy of the Community Security Trust of the United Kingdom: Please be respectful of any requests from the security guards, members of the Security Committee and on duty York Regional Police officers. Enter and exit the building only from the Clark Avenue West or the south parking lot doors. All exit doors signed as emergency exit are alarmed. If you hear an exit door alarm, please advise a security guard, member of the Security Committee or on duty York Regional Police officers. Be alert for suspicious behaviour including parked or stopped cars and unattended bags/parcels. If you see an unfamiliar face, greet them and ask if they need assistance. If they appear suspicious, do not approach them. Rather advise a security guard or police officer. Be aware of your surroundings, the nearest emergency exit and who and what is around you. Designate a meeting place away from the Shul for your family in the event of an emergency evacuation. Youth leaders will evacuate children in groups in the event of an emergency. Given recent global security alerts, it is better that community members do not congregate outside of the building particularly in front of the building on Clark Avenue West. If you notice suspicious behaviour in a passing vehicle, try to remember the make and color of the vehicle, the license plate and a description of the driver and passengers. Report the same to a security guard or police officer. Minors should be accompanied by an adult or should be participating in the appropriate Youth program. Congregating or hanging out in the halls or lobby areas disrupts davening and poses a security risk. Finally, we would like to thank Avi Deutsch for his years of service to the BAYT as chair of the Security Committee. His work has been invaluable. Thank you for helping to make sure that the BAYT is safe and secure for all of us. HIGH HOLY DAY GREETING On Behalf of the BAYT High Holy Day Committee, I wish to extend a warm greeting to our members and guests. The Yamim Noraim are a time of introspection. We are thankful to G d for what He has provided and we daven that we are worthy that G d will continue to grant us favour and continue to provide us with the many blessings in our lives. This year has been one of tremendous success for our community. We are blessed with an inspiring Mara D asra and a wonderful Rebbetzin. These Yamim Noraim mark the end of the second complete year from Rosh Hashanah to Rosh Hashanah with the Korobkin family. We are richer for it and we look forward to many more years of spiritual growth together under the guidance of Rabbi Daniel Korobkin. As High Holy Day Chairman for 2013 5774, I want to acknowledge the assistance and tremendous efforts of all those who help make these Yemei Teshuvah an inspiring experience at the BAYT. I would like to thank all of the members of the High Holy Day Committee for their tireless efforts, along with all of their volunteer committees who have given their time generously to all the varied aspects of putting together a meaningful Yamim Noraim on a year to year basis. Our shul is a collection of volunteers and I am amazed by the number of members who contribute to the smooth running of the High Holy Days and their dedication to our shul. The teamwork that goes into High Holy Days is incredible. There are over 300 members who are directly involved, from ba alei tefillah to speakers, from Security volunteers to physicians on call, from ushers to Youth leaders, from volunteers in the shul office to volunteers in the kitchens. Multiple committees work together to produce the High Holy Days, including Membership and Fundraising. What is most humbling is the number of members who step forward enthusiastically with a willingness to help in any way needed. A special thank you is due to the tremendous efforts of the office staff as well as the facilities staff who keep the BAYT running smoothly year after year. I would like to wish everyone a Ketivah ve Chatimah Tovah and may our tefillot this year bring success, good health, and happiness to everyone in our community and the entire Klal Yisrael. Melech Tanen Chair, High Holy Day Committee REMINDER Mincha & Maariv services on Erev Rosh Hashanah (Wednesday, September 4), the first day of Rosh Hashanah (Thursday, September 5) and the second day of Rosh Hashanah (Friday, September 6), will be held in the Main Shul and the Turk Family Bais Medrash only. TASHLICH Rosh Hashanah Day 1, Thursday, September 5 We will all meet for Tashlich at Oakbank Pond Park, located just west of the intersection of Centre St. and Oakbank Rd. During Kol Nidre services, we will offer you the opportunity of A DOUBLE MITZVAH Everyone is encouraged to make a Double pledge for a DOUBLE MITZVAH. There will be two appeals made during the Kol Nidre Service. The first request will be for you to consider investing of Israel Bonds. This is an investment by you to the State of Israel at a competitive rate of interest. It is a mitzvah to be involved in building the Land of Israel and Israel Bonds are an effective way to be involved in that mitzvah. To see the current rates of return offered by Israel Bonds, please visit www.israelbonds.ca. The second request is for a bond to be purchased by you and donated to the BAYT. If you make a double pledge then the donation will achieve the double goal of strengthening our homeland, the State of Israel and our Shul. This is a double mitzvah. A double pledge will benefit Israel immediately because Israel will receive an infusion of capital and you will get a full tax receipt for your donation to the BAYT. Please consider making a double pledge this year. In each program a snack will be provided for Rosh Hashanah mornings and sandwiches will be provided for lunch on Yom Kippur. NO PEANUT BUTTER. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any aspect of our Youth Department Programs, please do not hesitate to contact our Youth Director Rich Winkler at: 905 886 3810 x 135 or rich@bayt.ca We thank you for your co operation and wish everyone a K Siva V Chasima Tova and a Healthy & Happy New Year. IMPORTANT NOTES TO PARENTS Parents are reminded that they are responsible for their children while on Shul property. Every child must be in a minyan, with a parent or in a supervised youth program. This is essential for the safety of our children and the protection of the Shul property. The Shul will seek reimbursement from any parent whose child is found damaging Shul property. 1. Children should not be roaming the halls. Children without a seat in an adult minyan should be in the appropriate youth program or with a parent. 2. Parents should accompany their children to the appropriate youth program. 3. Children in the Nursery and the Kindergarten programs must wear their labels and older children should have their tickets with them. 4. In order to protect the safety of all children, we ask that you do not send snacks with your children. Some children have very distinct and severe food allergies. A shared snack could result in a serious situation. Snacks will be provided in all youth programs on Rosh Hashanah morning and sandwiches (no peanut butter) will be provided for lunch on Yom Kippur. 5. It may be wise to check on your children at appropriate intervals. Older siblings will not be permitted to stay in the Nursery and Kindergarten programs with their brothers or sisters. 6. Strollers and baby carriages are not permitted in the building as they present a hazard in the event of a required evacuation. They may be stored in the utility room behind the lower floor elevator or outside by the bike rack to the right of the parking door entrance. For fire and safety purposes, this ruling will be strictly enforced. Any strollers and carriages found inside the building will be removed to the designated storage space.
