The Grapevine March 2019 Hello! While I write this it is still February, it is cold, and it is raining. Spring seems so very close and yet so very far away, but the changing of the seasons will be close at hand by the time you read this letter! As we prepare for this change of season outside, we are also at the change of a season in our ministry together. A pastor s first year is marked by three distinct and different seasons of learning and ministry. Season one is listening to who the congregation says they are. When I met with SPRC, Church Council, the worship teams, trustees, and others, they all had a way of describing Yadkinville UMC and her mission and ministry. In my first conversations, I was told of a welcoming group of people who deeply love each other and this community, people who are dedicated to service, about empowered and passionate leaders, and a generous church. Season two is a season of watching, seeing who the church is through their actions. This is a fascinating season, because it is where you really get to know a congregation. Do the church s words match her actions? I think, for the most part, you understand who you are, what the church is called to be, and how we are at work in the world. If anything, I think that members of the congregation undersell how generous, loving, and mission oriented this congregation is. The third season is the season we are preparing to enter into, it is a season of casting a vision for our future together. So from March to May we will be having a series of small group dinners in homes around the community. At each of these meals I want to hear from you about what brought you to YUMC. What you love about this church and her people. I also want to hear your hopes for the future of Yadkinville. They will also provide an opportunity to fellowship together away from church. My hope is that this will help us chart a course into the future together. In preparation for these gatherings answer these questions for yourself: How did you come to attend YUMC? What keeps you here? When has the church helped you the most? When has the church let you down? What are you most excited for in the future of YUMC? Who would you like to see us reach out to? What one thing would you change about YUMC if you could? What one thing do you never want to see go away? Be in prayer for the church as we enter into this new spring together. Grace & Peace, Pastor Jonathan 1

Council on Ministries: The church council will meet on Thursday March 14 at 7:00 p.m. Anyone is welcome to contact a committee member or attend the meeting about concerns for the church. Our church is so fortunate that Jonathan, Keri and Henry have become such a special part of our fellowship at Yadkinville UMC in only a few short months. While Jonathan is doing an amazing job in the pulpit on Sundays, he is also visiting our shut-ins and the hospital or nursing home patients, he s volunteering at YES and has plans to volunteer in other community activities, and he has resumed our Wednesday night fellowship time with Fresh Expressions in the fall and now a wonderful study about the bestselling book To Kill A Mockingbird." Wednesday night meals are delicious and the fellowship with our new pastor and his 3

family is not to be missed! Henry is growing up right before our very eyes each week! I would encourage everyone to come out on Wednesday nights and join us for this very special time of connecting and sharing with our new pastor and his family. Missions: The March mission emphasis is UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). This organization was formed over 50 years ago to provide humanitarian relief for those in need. UMCOR trains and partners with other organizations to help in disasters. Some of these efforts have been: Tsunamis in Indonesia California wildfires Grants for sustainable water, food, and energy in countries around the world Even our own backyard with Hurricanes Florence and then Michael In the past, funding was obtained through the "One Great Hour of Sharing." This has now transitioned to a United Methodist UMCOR Sunday. At YUMC, this will be our emphasis for the month of March. Administrative and operational costs are less than 10% of total funds received. The funds donated during March will go for these costs so more efforts and 100% of donations for disaster preparedness, relief, and recovery long term is available. Be the hands and feet of Jesus to help fund efforts of UMCOR here and around the world. Checks to Yadkinville UMC designated to UMCOR and loose plate offerings will go to this project. Jesus preached to show love through helping one another. Maureen Silvernale, Project Coordinator The Missions Committee will meet Tuesday, March 26, at 7:00 p.m. in the Asbury Room. Church members and anyone interested in the mission program of YUMC is encouraged to attend. Bring ideas and suggestions! Gingi Parker, Chairperson Trustees: Hopefully spring is around the corner and we will be have our spring chair cleaning and repair in late March. Work opportunities will be available around the Church and Parsonage for pressure washing and landscaping. We will get these dates out soon. Thanks to all who work and do meals in the kitchen. Please make sure all items in cardboard whether new or open are in plastic containers in the kitchen. New containers have been purchased and it is very important not to store anything not in plastic containers to prevent pest problems. In the past month there have been repairs made on the heat and a/c units in the educational building and the Sanctuary. We are trying to get a second quote on upgrading the sound system in the Sanctuary. The first quote was around $12,000 and we had one company who looked but did not do a final quote. So we are working with a third company now. The next Trustee meeting is on Tuesday night March 12 at 7:00 p.m.. Virgil Dodson, Chairperson United Methodist Women: Our District Mission Study will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Pine Grove UM Church, 1130 Jonestown Rd, Winston Salem. Valerie Prim, Yadkin Valley District Mission Education coordinator is in charge of this program. 5

On March 23, 1869, eight women gathered to form the Women's Foreign Missionary Society which is now the United Methodist Women. In honor of this event, on Sunday, March 24, we will have a special time to talk about this and will have a birthday cake for everyone after both worship services. Stay and help us celebrate our 150 years of service with women, children, and youth around the world and locally.
