Dear Friend, Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount Living Out the Way of Jesus Welcome to our Bible Study Walking in God s Kingdom! This is a wonderful journey through 107 red-letter verses from chapters 5-7 of the gospel according to Matthew often referred to as the Sermon on the Mount. At the beginning of any journey, a little planning and surveying the map can generate excitement and purpose, so before you even begin the first day of writing and study, I would like to suggest that you take 20 minutes and read through all three chapters (Matthew 5-6-7) in one sitting. Before you read: Pray ask God to keep your mind on track; Prepare read this text not as individual chapters plucked out of your Bible, but as a disciple sitting on the grass, listening to your master explain the meaning of life and the kingdom of God. Pencil Underline or mark a couple of consistent words or phrases that you will encounter multiple times: Kingdom, or Kingdom of God Father, Heavenly Father, or Father in Heaven One thing you are sure to note is that Jesus was consistently revealing to his followers how differently they would live compared to everyone around them if they would put his teaching into practice... they would NOT resemble the religious people they were familiar with the Scribes and Pharisees, and they would also NOT live their lives like the pagans those without religious foundation. They would be completely and wholly different a counter culture of God s kingdom. READ and WRITE Matthew 5:33-37 in your journal. What summary title would you give to these verses? This is the third you have heard that it was said passage. It is not really a direct reference to a commandment or set of laws; however, there are several Old Testament Scriptures that might be worth reading: Exodus 20:7 Leviticus 19:12 Numbers 30:2 Deuteronomy 23:21 It s clear from reading these that God s heart is set against making a vow, or an oath or a promise and then not following through. Read also Matthew 23:16-22 and write a sentence or two about the games that the Scribes and Pharisees were playing with their promises: How do you think the issue of taking oaths and making vows is related to the previous words of Jesus about marriage and divorce: God always gets to the heart of the matter forget games, technicalities, and escape clauses.
