It was a great meeting last night with a welcome return of 2 visitors Mary Jones and Margaret O Neill the great news is they will both become new members! You will have noticed via the email from Bryan that we have already received the completed membership form from Mary, and welcomed Barry Handsome back into the fold after his 4 month vacation. We had the distinct pleasure of hearing fellow Rotarian Peter Gray speak of the wonderful project that he and the Phnom Penh Rotary Club have initiated and are continuing with fellow Rotarians support. To think that these poor children have such terrible disfigurements from MEC and that it is the result of eating mouldy rice is quite flabbergasting. And that the Hospital is run with practically nil overheads and so much volunteer work is astounding. That such an operation and aftercare can be completed for only $1,100 is a testament to the passion and generosity of so many wonderful people. A reminder to all that on Monday 31st Oct there will be no meeting as it is Cup Eve. Monday the 7th November will be our Friends of Rotary Night and we hope to see you all there. Monday 14th November there will not be a meeting at Kooringal instead we will be attending the Cluster Foundation dinner at the Yarraville Club a flyer and details of how to book are in this edition. Monday 21st November will now be the night that we hold our AGM. Sending hugs, love and healing vibes out to those who may also be feeling a little under the weather. And to those of you away enjoying your jollidays and sunny good weather, woo hoo! I hope you all have an awesome week ahead of you and look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, Monday, November 7. Thought for the week: SMILE As it s the key that fits the lock to everybody s heart Aveagoodweek everyone! At the fifth attempt, she was determined to pass. But the test had the same question :"You are driving at 120 mph. On your right is a wall, on your left is a cliff. On the road, you see an old man and a young man. What will you hit?". The woman walked up to the examiner and said, "I've answered this question in all four ways, wall, cliff, young man, old man. Yet I failed all the four times. How is this possible? What am I supposed to hit???? Examiner The"BRAKES" Men are not supposed to laugh please!!!! It s a birth defect affecting 1,000+ people, mostly children, in Cambodia and more across SE Asia. It s operable with 99%+ success. MEC is the failure of the skull to close near the bridge of the nose during the early weeks of pregnancy. A hernia forms that contains cranial fluid and sometimes brain tissue. Tear duct function is often disrupted and eyeinfections prevalent. If untreated then any infection has a clear passage through to the brain. Meningitis can ensue with little hope of survival for those in the provinces. Patients are ridiculed at school so usually do not attend. Families can be ostracised in the village. RC Phnom Penh (RCPP) and the Children s Surgical Centre (CSC) in Phnom Penh partnered in August 2013. CSC do all the surgical, medicinal and nursing work. RCPP does the outreach to seek out patients, counsels them, transports them to and from CSC and much more. We pass $500 USD to CSC for each MEC operation, regardless of how many follow up operations may be needed, sometimes several. $300 USD covers all the other costs, again regardless of the number of trips. Everything is completely free to the patients and families. The partnership has now completed 76 MEC operations, 28 reconstructions and 95 post op check-ups with the assistance and support of Clubs in Australia, Japan, France, the USA and the UK.
