February 2013 Golden Spike Amateur Radio Club Volume 27 Issue 2 February 2013 Presidents/VP Corner: Presidents Note: Because this is the last month of my term as the President of the I would like to thank each of you for your friendship and support. I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve and help promote Amateur Radio and Emergency Communications in our County. I have already been contacted about our communication support for the ADA Tour de Cure Bike Ride this year. The ride will be Saturday June 8 th so PLEASE mark this date on your calendar and let s make this another great year for the ADA in Box Elder County. Lets not forget about the other activities already planned: Club meetings are normally held the 4 th Thursday of the month but listen to our local Net s for locations and any changes; The Great Utah Shakeout April 17 th ; Field Day the 4th weekend in June, that would be the 22 nd and 23 rd ; Communications support for the Tremonton Fair Parade in August; Communications support for the Peach Days Parade in September; Local FOX hunts and training; BSA JOTA (Jamboree-On-The-Air) in October. There are many other events that happen through the year that we are asked to assist with communications. We also would like to hear your ideas as to what we as a group could do. Amateur Radio isn t just for emergencies it s a fun hobby so let s have FUN! Let s hear you on the repeaters. I have once again attached the Yearly Membership Application Form to this Newsletter. I have had many people new to Amateur Radio ask how to join the Club. It s great to see the excitement in their eyes. Don t forget that with each paid Membership you are put in for the drawing for Grand Prize that will be given away at the party. For the New Amateur this is a great chance and opportunity to get started with a great Radio. Even for us older Amateurs this is a very nice radio and would go great in your Shack or Grab-n-Go Kit. Club Presidency positions are also open and we will have elections at the party. If you are interested in being one of the Club Presidency please let one of the current presidency know so we can get your name on the ballot. Being a member of the Club Presidency is great fun but there is a lot of responsibility that comes with each position. There are a few projects that have to be worked and finished. If you feel you would like to see the Club do something different or go a different direction now is your chance to help the Club and other Amateur Operators in our area. Lets all have a great year, have fun and be safe! 73 Bob Haynie KC7JOK What s Been Happening? The January Club Meting was held in Bear River City. Items of discussion are as follows: The February Party; Club Presidency Elections; The location for Field Day; The Great Utah Shakeout; Planned Activities List for 2013; Testing Session; Name change for 22 repeater dropping Fielding from the repeater name, need to check the VHF Society web to see name and request changes there. 1

Brady Hales, KE7OMC, leaves for his 2-year LDS Mission to Brazil mid February. GOOD LUCK! ATK (Blue Springs Hills) Repeater Update: No new information. Brigham City Repeater Update: There have been some problems with the repeater linking to the 43. The problems will being investigated as soon as the road to the site is clear of snow. Paul is still working on the new CAT-1000 Repeater Controller and Link Board construction and stated at the Club Meeting it should be completed soon. Fielding-Riverside Repeater Update: The road to the repeater is snow packed. Any work on the repeater will have to wait for the snow to melt or a plow to clear the way. 2 You are invited to join thousands of people who will Drop, Cover and Hold On at 10:15 a.m. on April 17 th in the 2013 Great Utah ShakeOut. Register: http://www.shakeout.org/utah/ Preparations for the 2013 Great Utah ShakeOut are already under way. Mark this on your calendar. Our Box Elder County ARES communication group will be assisting our local schools, hospitals, cities and some churches this year. We will also be involved in a multi-county communication drill. We are going to put into practice things we learned from the 2012 ShakeOut. Because of layoffs and changes at ATK we are no longer able to mail, Snail Mail, the newsletter. Due to the cost of printing and postage it has been determined and will be necessary to publish the newsletter on the Club web site only. We hope that this will not be a problem for our members. Byron Okada KE7IRH, who still works at ATK, was contacted by the Recreational Council (RC). They told him about possible Club funding again. They requested Club information, membership and a budget. The requested for funding was turned in as well as the membership information to the RC. Further information will be printed as we receive it from ATK. See below: ATK sent Byron a response to the funding request. It appears that the RC has to be very selective which Clubs they provide funding for and our Club will not be funded this year, 2012. We need to get more ATK employees as members of our Club to get possible funding from the RC. Other News and Items of interest: An antenna building party and Fox Hunt training was discussed at the January Club Meeting. J-Pole and Tape Measure antennas were discussed and the Club will plan a time when we can get together and

build a few. A list of supplies needed and the cost will be put together at which time those interested can sign up for the build. Amateur Radio Resources: Scanners An interesting set of articles about Amateur Radio, Scanners and Police Radios can be found at the following web site: http://www.barcodediscount.com/articles/amateurradio-resources-scanners.htm This information was provided from Dave Cook who received it from a teacher and student, Ms. Deborah Ward and Dan, working on a class project. Dan is an avid scanner user and thought that the above site and articles might be of interest to the members of the and others interested in Amateur Radio and the use of scanners. Training Classes and Test Sessions: A testing session was held Thursday January 31 st in Brigham at the School Board Office building. Continue listening to our local Nets for information about where and when new training classes and test sessions will be held. If you have any friends that might be interested please invite them to join. Box Elder County ARES Amateur Radio Emergency Service February 2013: So are you as tired of winter and the cold as I am? There have been many accidents on the highway as well as around our towns. Having the canyon closed is tough on those trying to make it to work or school. Several teachers that work at the Box Elder Middle School in Brigham were stuck in the canyon while it was shut down. How many of us would be prepared if we were stuck in the canyon or anyplace during Winter? After talking to several of the teachers I was surprised to find out that many of them were unprepared for an emergency of this kind. What would you do, how should we be prepared? I found out that a couple of the cars didn t have enough gas because they were stopped in the canyon for several hours. Because it was so cold many people ran their car to keep warm. Some people had to shut their cars off because they didn t have enough gas. Windows inside the cars were frosting and icing up because they couldn t keep the cars warm. What would you do if you were trapped in you car or truck in the canyon like the BEMS teachers. Do you have supplies that could sustain you and you passengers for several hours in below freezing temperatures? It is suggested that you should keep your fuel tank near full at all times. During these cold winter months you should keep spare blankets and some kind of snacks and water for emergencies in you car. Marsha and I keep a cooler in each of our vehicles to store water bottles in. The cooler keeps the water cool during the summer months and help to keep it from freezing during the cold winter months. We also keep snacks, food and a cook stove in each vehicle along with blankets. Anything is better than nothing. You can never be to prepared for an emergency. I hope everyone will take a few minutes and think about putting a few emergency supplies in a backpack or something and place it in your vehicle. Don t get caught unprepared during an emergency. It has been ten years since Amateur Radio Operators were asked to assist NASA in looking for parts of the Space Shuttle Columbia. As you recall Columbia broke up during re-entry and parts were scattered over several states. I watched a special that NASA memorial on TV as well as over the internet. As I watched the memorial I was remembering how amateur operators helped in the search for parts and helped coordinate the search and help document locations of parts found using GPS. Would you be prepared to help if we were called to help during a search and rescue? I hope that I would have my equipment and Grab-n-Go kit ready to go whenever I may be called. * * * 73 Bob Haynie KC7JOK Box Elder County ARES EC bhaynie72@hotmail.com *
