Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel Shall Come to Thee Third Sunday in Advent December 15 & 16, 2012 1

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Following the old church custom, the theme for this Sunday is "Rejoice!" On the Advent wreath the solitary pink candle is lighted. Along with the two candles from the preceding Sundays in Advent, the increasing light shows we are now getting closer and closer to the nativity birth of our Savior-- -Christmas! Only one more candle remains to be lit! WELCOME RINGING OF THE BELL ENTRANCE HYMN "Hark the Glad Sound" LW 29 INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen OPENING SENTENCES 2

Pastor: Jesus said, "I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in darkness but have the light of life." People: We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ. Pastor: "It is too light a thing that You should be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make You a light for the nations, that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth." Isaiah 49:6 People: Come, Lord Jesus, our Light and Life. Pastor: Until that day, let us walk in the light of the Lord. (The first, second, and third Advent candles are lit. The third candle is pink---a color frequently specified for this day of rejoicing.) CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION Pastor: Let us confess our sins before God and one another. People: Almighty God, merciful Father, we confess to You and to our brothers and sisters in Christ that we purposely try to forget our sins, to minimize them by comparing ourselves to others whom we consider greater sinners than ourselves. Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love, for they are from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to Your steadfast love remember me, For the sake of Your goodness, O Lord. cf. Psalm 25:6-7 3

Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ, God declares to us that as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12) Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. We are all forgiven through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ our Lord! People: Thanks be to God! KYRIE Pastor: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For the peace of the whole world, for the well being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. People: Amen. 4

HYMN OF PRAISE Rejoice, O Pilgrim Throng LW 455 Rejoice, O pilgrim throng! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing; Your festal banner wave on high, The cross of Christ your king. Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! With all the angel choirs, With all the saints on earth Pour out the strains of joy and bliss, True rapture, noblest mirth. Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. You came, Lord Christ, when the time was fulfilled. And we know You will come again when the time is ripe. We see that darkness overtakes the earth and shrouds the people. You say that in this darkness a great light shall rise up. Help us all to see it. Let the light be so clear that even our blind eyes see it and that all nations may walk in it. For Your name sake. People: Amen. OUR MISSION AND MINISTRY IN OUR PRAYERS: Lord, we thank You that You have taught us what You would have us believe and do. Help us by Your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ, to hold fast Your Word in our hearts which You have cleansed that thereby we may be made strong in faith and perfect in holiness, and be comforted in life and death. At this time, we pray for the sick and recovering members and friends of our congregation, especially Charles Althage, brother of Mary Sprick who is recovering and doing well after a heart attack and heart surgery; Carol Sprick, who is recovering at Grandview Health Care after knee surgery; Wilma Helling, Jim Kormeier, Donald Slack and Bonnie Engemann, as they deal with cancer issues; (Bonnie is now on Hospice Care); Eric Hohlt, Paula Gleitz, as she recovers from her surgery. We also remember our many shut-ins in our congregation Adeline Keune, Yvonne Gleitz, Edna Deppermann, Ardell Wagner, Ed Gardner, Beth Pelster, Delores Roehrs, Hulda Althage and all those we hold dear in our hearts. We pray for our congregation, that we may be diligent in the work of our Lord at Ebenezer, and joyfully offer the time, talents and material resources God has supplied to us for the work in His kingdom. We pray for the Church, that we may proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ with boldness and courage and that fear may not distract or dampen the joyful proclamation of the Word of God. We pray for our Missionaries, Robin McCoy in Thailand, John Strasen and Mike and Cindy Rodewald in Africa that they will remain safe and able to continue to spread the Word of God. 8

We pray for our many men and women of our Armed Forces stationed around the world and here at home; and the people who respond to emergencies our law enforcement people, and the firefighters who help protect us. We pray for safe travel as Pastor and Margaret are driving to Minnesota to visit the dual congregations that Pastor has received a call to. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ To our members and guests who are here with us today. We are very glad you are here for our worship services. May the Lord refresh you with peace and love during our worship services! Please join us here at Ebenezer again soon! Please sign the guest register near the front door of the Church with your name, address and Church affiliation. Thank you! We welcome Rev. Mark Goucher from Bethlehem Lutheran Church who will lead our Saturday afternoon worship and Rev. Castens from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis who will lead us in worship on Sunday morning. We have received several Thank you notes from our guests who attended the Senior Citizen s dinner. Thank you so much for all your planning and hard work to give us the Senior Citizen dinner last Sunday. We enjoyed it and do appreciate all your efforts to do this for us. Thank you very much for everything our youth and parents did to give us a wonderful Senior Citizen s dinner. It was great and we appreciate all the hard work and delicious food. Thanks to Santa too! 9

Thrivent Choice Dollars Reminder. A note from Karen Sprick. I spoke with someone at the Thrivent office recently about the process of directing the Thrivent Choice dollars beginning in 2013. There will be two ways to do it. You will be able to direct them quarterly or annually. There will be no recurring direction any longer. QUARTERLY: If you choose to direct your dollars quarterly, the money will come in as it is doing now. To do that, you must call or go online and direct your dollars each quarter of 2013 (Jan Mar 31, April June 30, July Sept. 30, Oct. Dec. 31) ANNUALLY: If you choose to direct the dollars annually, you must call or go online during the first quarter of 2014 (Jan. Mar. 31, 2014). By calling in then, you will direct all of your dollars you accumulated during 2013. The phone number is 1-800-THRIVEN (1-800-847-4836) or you can go to www.thrivent.com and go to directing choice dollars. If you have any questions, I will try to get the answer for you or better yet, just call the above number and ask for Thrivent Choice Dollar information. Thank you for directing your dollars to Ebenezer in the past. Many of you have participated in the program and have given more than $2500 quarterly to Ebenezer. I hope that you will continue to direct the money to the church, by using one of the above methods. According to the records I found online for Ebenezer, there are still about 60 Thrivent members who have not directed their funds anywhere. If you are one of these members, please consider making a phone call during the first quarter of 2013 to direct the money accumulated during this calendar year. Thank you, Karen Sprick, Thrivent Advocate for Ebenezer. Our third Advent Services will be held here at Ebenezer on Wednesday, December 19 at 10:00 AM and 7:30 PM. Our last Children s Christmas Program practice will be held Saturday, December 22 nd 9:30 11:00 AM. 10

We have received the following information from Dan and Kathy Walther from Immanuel in Washington Eyeglass Mission Trip to Guatemala Members from circuit churches are encouraged to participate in a 10 day eyeglass distribution trip with MISSION OPPORTUNITIES SHORT TERM (MOST) from June 22 to July 1. We will be setting up clinics in 8 different communities across Guatemala. These clinics are requested by village pastors as a means for gospel outreach to impoverished areas. No special skills are needed. One day of training is provided by MOST leaders. Call Dan or Kathy Walther (636-239-6530) for more information, costs, and an application form. There is a poster on the bulletin board here in Church and we have been asked to put the bulletin insert in our bulletins. Dan and Kathy Walther have been on several of these mission trips and they would welcome any questions you may have! Members Please pick up your 2013 offering envelopes at the Church entrance. The accuracy of your contribution record depends on your envelope number being correct, so be sure to check it, both on the box s address label and the envelopes themselves. It should be the same as in 2012. Also, please report any address changes, etc. to Mary Sprick. Thank you! 11
