AustralAsian Newsletter / June 2017 For the Christian who wants to learn about Jews and Evangelism Go Ahead. Be Provocative! Since most believers today are Gentiles, Jewish people are far more likely to meet a Gentile Christian than a Jew for Jesus. But the fact remains, the careful efforts of non-jewish believers to reach Jewish friends, family and coworkers are highly effective for bringing Jewish people into the kingdom. That is why it is so crucial that Christians not only believe the importance of Jewish evangelism, but practice it as well. The Apostle Paul urged the Roman believers to do so when he wrote, I say then, have they [the Jewish people] stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles (Romans 11:11). God wants and expects Christians to provoke their Jewish friends and neighbors to jealousy. So go ahead. Be pro- David Brickner Executive Director, San Francisco USA

vocative! And while you re provoking your Jewish friends to jealousy through your life-changing, grace-filled faith in Jesus, please help us persuade your Christian friends to do the same. I hope you will order and read Jews Don t Need Jesus and Other Misconceptions, by our European ministry director, Avi Snyder. It s again featured on the back page. The book explains better than any I ve ever seen the importance of reaching Jewish people for Jesus as part of God s plan for Israel and for the entire world. My friend, Pastor John Piper, has written a magnificent foreword to Avi s book, which begins: Even before I read this book, I felt a deep desire to write a foreword for a work on this topic. Now that I have read it, that desire burns all the more. Before I knew this book was being written, I had said to the content team at our web-based ministry, desiringgod.org, I want us to do more for the cause of Jewish evangelism. Why was I stirred again with this burden? And all the more now that I have read this book? I hope you ll get the book and read the rest of John s foreword. It s the perfect thing to share with your Christian friends who appreciate John Piper s ministry, but have yet to catch a vision for the importance of Jewish evangelism. And, if you want to put into action your vision for sharing with Jewish people, consider our classic how-to resource from our Founder, Moishe Rosen, titled Witnessing to Jews: Practical ways to relate the love of Jesus. It s a classic for many reasons, and will assist you in witnessing to anyone! My son Isaac, who serves with Jews for Jesus in Southern California, recently told me a story that I think you should hear. While speaking at churches in Kentucky, he met a pastor s son who had been witnessing to a Jewish friend. Though unable to meet the young man during his short stay, Isaac promised the pastor and his son that he d pray for their Jewish friend. And the pastor s son did lead his friend to faith in Jesus! The young man was hesitant to be open about it for fear of family backlash, etc. but after hearing that Jews for Jesus were And while you re provoking your Jewish friends to jealousy through your lifechanging, grace-filled faith in Jesus, please help us persuade your Christian friends to do the same. praying for him, he got the courage to be baptized and proclaim his faith publicly. The pastor is walking on clouds, so excited that the Lord gave him the privilege of baptizing a new Jewish believer and so grateful to have Jews for Jesus giving needed encouragement and prayer support. That story provokes me to provoke you to provoke your Jewish friends to jealousy. What do you say? BITS from the BRANCHES Live Chat Jewish people are finding Jesus on the Internet! Every day our staff and volunteers introduce themselves online to people who browse our website which makes our website one huge, worldwide cyberbranch!* One volunteer, John, spent 45 minutes chatting with a Jewish woman named Simone, who was drawn to Jesus for the way He spoke to sinners whom others rejected. John not only unpacked the gospel for Simone from the Bible, he answered each of her questions carefully and compassionately. Simone finally asked, What do I do if I believe He is the Messiah? Once again, John answered, and this time it was apparent that Simone really wanted to turn to Jesus, but was afraid. I have already turned away so many people. I do not want to be even more a stranger because [to them] I am not Jewish enough anymore. John, a 60-year-old Jewish grandfather, continued to respond to Simone, her concerns, her longing to be right with God, and her fear that her sins were past forgiving. Her struggle was poignant and so real. But at the end of the chat, Simone said that she believed, and that she was ready to pray for forgiveness based on what Jesus had done for her. Please pray for Simone to grow in her faith! Aaron Lewin reports from Berlin about Repairing the damage: love and anti-semitism Alan, one of my Israeli contacts in Berlin, loves Jesus and thinks that He is one of the most misunderstood people in history. However, Alan hasn t taken the important step of surrendering his life to Jesus. One of his major stumbling blocks is the anti-semitism that he has witnessed in the history of the church. Despite my explanations that these acts of hate are contrary to what it means to follow Jesus, he was very skeptical. So, when two young Dutch Christians who have a heart for Israel and our people came to town, I thought it would be a good idea for us all to connect. Alan sat in amazement as these young men told stories about Dutch Christians who had risked their lives during the Holocaust in order to save our people and then demonstrated their own love by giving him a wonderfully ornate Bible. Alan was overcome and didn t know how to react. He told me on the phone afterwards that he hadn t been ready for such an intense encounter. My prayer is that God would have used it to open his heart to the point where he would now make a commitment to follow Jesus. *One way you can share Jesus with a Jewish friend is simply suggest they check out our website at: www.jewsforjesus.org.au They will find all kinds of information about Jesus to explore in the privacy of their own home, plus the opportunity to chat online with one of our staff or volunteers. Names of many people we meet are changed to protect privacy.

Please pray for: many more Christians to provoke their Jewish friends to jealousy (Romans 11:11) salvation for Alan in Berlin, as well as for Moshe and so many other Israelis who recently heard the gospel at our center in Tel Aviv grace and strength for Simone, who prayed to receive Jesus on LiveChat preparations for our next Sydney summer witnessing campaign Prompters ABOUT Direct Deposit We are very grateful for those of you who donate by direct deposit into our bank. More than 600 Israelis came to our Moishe Rosen Center in Tel Aviv! Every year we send teams to India to meet up with Israeli travelers, many of whom are spiritually seeking. India Through the Eyes of the Traveler has become an annual photo gallery event; it s a great way to reconnect with Israelis who ve come home from their travels. This year, more than 600 attended the three-day event more than twice as many as last year! Our Moishe Rosen Center is a great venue for this sort of event, and this year additional lights and hangers were installed, making it possible to highlight more photos. This year we displayed more than 100 photos taken by 23 Israelis. What was different in 2017? Danielle and Shoshana began recruiting photographers and promoting the events while our teams were meeting Israelis in India. Miri (one of our newer staff who co-led the event with Shoshana) used our patio to recreate the casual atmosphere of a café in India. Danielle brought in a young chef who sold Indian food during the event, and also reached out to a jewelry designer who set up a table to sell her work. Both these things drew visitors from the neighborhood. The team created a map of India where people could pin the locations they had visited. The team created a new backdrop for taking portraits, used professional lighting and offered photo magnets for people to bring home as souvenirs. What was the same? Both artists and visitors so appreciated the atmosphere of love and joy they encountered. Their curiosity about why Jews for Jesus would share our facility this way made it easy and natural for our staff to share the gospel. What was especially encouraging? Moshe, the chef, had already talked to many of the team about Jesus and felt like he knew a lot when he asked Danielle why she believes in Jesus. She replied, I don t know how you don t; so much is written about Him in the Tanakh (Hebrew Scriptures). That caught his attention. After the event he sat looking at Messianic prophecies for an hour and a half (until 2 a.m.!). Please pray for God to reveal Himself to Moshe. Our team had one conversation after another with unbelieving Israelis throughout the event. Eli, Shoshana s husband, who leads our young adult ministry in Tel Aviv, had twenty gospel conversations during the course of the event.
