for the persecuted church

A guide for individual discovery of God s Truth Open in prayer conversation with the Author Purpose encourage you in studying the Bible. Through our teaching for you to see that you can study God s word yourself. We are not experts. We are children learning from a letter our Father wrote to us.

Parts of Bible Study Comprehension what does it say? This will be the focus of the presenters. Interpretation what does it mean? In your groups, as you share, you will be interpreting the content and probing the meaning. Application how should it change me? Partly in your groups and primarily on your own, ask how to obey by applying the truth.

Author / Time Who wrote it? Paul (apostle), Silas and Timothy They had all been with the Thessalonians teaching (1:4, 1:6, 2:1), and were persecuted and had to flee (Acts 17:1-15) When? After their previous visit (2:1) After Timothy had visited and returned to Paul (3:6) While Paul was in Corinth (AD 49-51) during his second missionary journey

Paul s Missionary Journeys

The Thessalonians Where? Thessalonica is a city in Greece with a harbor and where much trading took place People worshipped Greek and Roman gods and the emperor. Jewish population also existed Who? Letter is addressed to believers and to brothers and sisters Oral society, not much access to written teaching There are still believers in this city today

A Greek Christian from Thesalonika reached out to refugees at a camp in northern Greece (2018)

Purpose Why did Paul write it? (2:17-3:3) Concerned about the people a very new church that is under persecution and has seen some in their midst die unexpectedly (4:13) From Timothy s report he knows they need to better understand Christ s second coming and other matters Remember this is primarily an oral society and he left quickly, so written instruction is helpful

Overview Theme Second Coming of Christ mentioned in every chapter Chapters 1-3: Affirmations of their faith, reminders of the gospel basics and of Paul s authority Chapters 4-5: Teaching on Christ s second coming and how to live a holy life and encourage each other

Chapter 1 - Summary 1 - Paul thanks God for the Thessalonians. Timothy has told him how believers across a wide area are witnesses that: You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom God raised from the dead, Jesus who rescues us from the coming wrath.

Chapters 2-3 2- Paul reminds them that he preached the gospel of God among them with humility and they received the word as the word of God, not man. 2b-3a- After his abrupt departure, Paul longed to return, but could not so he sent Timothy to encourage them. 3b-The message Timothy brought back encouraged Paul and he prays for God to strengthen their hearts.

Chapters 4-5 4 - Live a holy life and work for a living. Christ is coming back and both the dead and the living will meet Him and be with him forever! 5 We don t know when the day of the Lord will be, so be alert! 5b- Acknowledge ministers of the gospel and live in peace together.

1 Thessalonians Chapter 1

Thessalonica is a city in Greece

Theme of Chapter 1 Chapter 1 is kind of a prelude. Paul reminds the Thessalonians of the time they spent together, what he taught and how they responded.

Color coding Purple = God, Jesus, Holy Spirit Blue = God s part- something God does or gives Green = My part my action Red = gospel / salvation Pink = all the peoples / the world / nations

1 Thessalonians 1:1-2 Paul, Silas and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you. We ALWAYS thank God for ALL of you mentioning you in our prayers

1 Thessalonians 1:3 We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ

1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 For we know that He has chosen you brothers & sisters loved by God because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power with the Holy Spirit & with deep conviction

1 Thessalonians 1:5b-7 You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us & of the Lord; For You welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit

1 Thessalonians 1:7-8a And so You became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia The Lord s message rang out from you not only to Macedonia and Achaia your faith in God has become known EVERYWHERE.

EVERYWHERE

1 Thessalonians 1:8b-9a Therefore, we do not need to say anything about it for they, themselves, report what kind of reception you gave us.

1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 the key They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait for His Son from Heaven whom He raised from the dead Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.
