THE FIRST EPISTLE OF PETER TO THE CHURCH OF THE DISPERSION THROUGHOUT THE WORLD 1 PETER CHAPTER 2:1-10 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-956 JULY 22, 2018 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: The Ministry of The Grace of God Toward All Those Who Are Anchored in Christ. SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Grace, Holiness, Waiting, Sanctification, Maturity Introduction to the Text: 1 Peter 2:1-10 What Does The Word Anointing Mean? A special and often understood to be, divine touch or covering. To be anointed as a Royal would be to have the powers and privileges of a kingdom realm placed upon you and before. To be both the Supreme Ruler as well as the model Subject. We Have Biblical Examples of The Acts of Anointing 1 Peter 2:1-10 Therefore, laying aside all malice all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. :4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame. :7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone, 8 and A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. :9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. 1

We ve seen Peter the fisherman. We ve seen Peter the theologian. Now we see Peter the Expositor. As he draws from the history of his forefathers. We have to go back to the Old Testament as Peter makes his point using the Word of God He draws from the Hebrew Prophets. Psalm 138:2c For You have magnified Your word above all Your name. We just heard Peter say this last week; 1 Peter 1:25 But The word of the Lord endures forever. Quoting Psalm 135:13 Christian listen, you will never go astray if you take God s word literally. Don t worry, when it s poetic it says so. When it s allegorical it says so. But even in the poetic and in the allegorical it is God s word that is being spoken Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, Sadly, today there are many people who are escorting themselves to destruction as they seek a compromise by trying to get the Bible to agree with their Life or lifestyle and by trying to convince themselves that Jesus didn t specifically mention this or that in the Bible. Well my friend, I thoroughly intend to disappoint you which could very well save your life, because this is what Jesus said about the Bible Matthew 5:17-18 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 2

1.) Is a declaration of war vs. 1-3 Is a declaration of war 1a.) We are at war with the old world vs. 1 :1 Therefore, laying aside all malice (you will no longer be needing this), all deceit, (you will no longer be needing this), hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, laying aside grk: apotithemi; to put off, to lay aside. to take off your old cloths along with its old lifestyle. old thoughts. old ways. to peel them off. Innuendo. dirty jokes, crude remarks, Application: the opposite of malice is to; all deceit grk: dolos; from the root del; a bait, fig. craft, deceit: deceit(6), guile(3), stealth(2). Application: the opposite of deceit is to; all hypocrisy grk: hupokrisis; to give a reply to one answer, playacting, hypocrisy: hypocrisy(6). To wear the masks. To put on a face for the moment. To hide behind the mask. When we wear a mask it allows us to either act like someone that we are not or it allows us to act like the person we want to secretly be but are not allowed to be. Application: the opposite of hypocrisy is to; all envy Madri Gras / Costume Parties / Halloween / Gay Pride Parades Proverbs 29:18 NLT When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. grk: phthonos; a prim. word; envy: envy (7), envying(1), jealously(1). all evil speaking grk: katalalia; from 2637; evil-speaking: to gossip, teardown, to speak in a disparaging way of another person. Slander, degrade. It can also mean the unwise use of information about someone that causes others to see them in a negative light. To impugned or to call into question someone s character. Romans 6:11-13 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. :12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. True, spiritual development will unmask the evils in our lives Our Countermeasures And here Peter introduces us to the Christian s countermeasures against these wicked tendencies of ours. Is a declaration of war 1b.) We are at war with a new objective vs. 2-3 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. as newborn babes Signifying that the child of God has been brought forth, pulled out of the womb of this world and into a new world. newborn grk: a nursing infant. This word is not an insult or a derogatory critic. The word means that there is one single desire that a newborn has - Got Milk? James 1:18a Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, the pure milk of the word The Pure Milk is the perfect, clean, untainted, nutrient-rich milk of a new mother - so is the word of God to a newly born soul. 4

Babies love milk! Not a Pepsi. Not a Latte. But milk. There s a real danger to having a poor diet and it s even more dangerous when it comes to a spiritual diet. Desire grk: epipotheo; to yearn for. To be drawn to and toward by instinct. An Intense Craving for the Person of God. ATTENTION ALL This word Epee-path a-o means that there is a deep, persistent, ongoing yearning for the Person of God a chronic longing for Him. ATTENTION ALL What s implied here is that we are in Catastrophic need of God to counter the troubles and the dangers that are native to the Christian s life. Isaiah 55:1a Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters Psalms 42:1-2 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, Where is your God? (vs 2) that you may grow thereby, Are we seeing Growth in our personal development? Are we seeing Growth in our personal in worship? Are we seeing Growth in our understanding? Are we seeing Growth in our prayer life? Are we seeing Growth in our giving? (vs 3) if (since) indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. Tasted grk: ghyoo -om-ahee; to experience (in this context, the goodness of God in a recognizably bad world) 5

Psalm 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! 1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe. Gracious grk: chrestos; adj. from 5530; serviceable, good: easy(1), good(2), kind(2), kindness(2). Sometimes people don t have an appetite for good food because they ve become so use to eating junk food. End of Study Copyright Sunday, July 22, 2018 by Jack Hibbs 6
