Mark the Evangelist CHORAL EVENSONG Wednesday 25 April 2018
WELCOME TO GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL Guildford Cathedral is a place of prayer, reflection, work and celebration, held in particular affection by the many thousands of people who helped build it by buying a brick. The Cathedral is a sacred space and an open community of people who together engage with God and the wider world, for the common good. It is a focus and resource for the whole community: a place of daily choral worship, a space for stillness and prayer, a place of pilgrimage and a venue for concerts, art and education. MARK THE EVANGELIST John Mark was a Jew and, according to Paul's letter to the Colossians, was cousin to Barnabas. He accompanied Barnabas and Paul on their first missionary journey. Afterwards, he went to Cyprus with Barnabas and to Rome with first Paul and then Peter. Mark's gospel is generally regarded as the earliest and was most likely written whilst he was in Rome. It was probably based as much on Peter's preaching of the good news as on Mark's own memory. Mark's gospel has a sharpness and an immediacy about it and he does not spare the apostles in noting their weaknesses and lack of understanding that Jesus the Christ would suffer for the world's redemption. Sharing in the glory of the resurrection means sharing in the giving of self, both in body and spirit, even to death; sharing the gospel was, for all, in essence both excessively generous and ultimately sacrificial. MUSIC The service is sung by the Cathedral Choir, directed by the Organist and Master of the Choristers, Katherine Dienes-Williams. The organ is played by Richard Moore, Sub Organist. INTROIT Laetabitur iustus in Domino, Et sperabit in eo : Et laudabuntur omnes recti corde. Alleluia. The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord, and put his trust in him : And all they that are true of heart shall be glad. Alleluia. Words: Psalm 63. 11 Music: Mikolaj Ziełeński (c. 1550 - c. 1616) WELCOME The Canon Liturgist INTRODUCTION AND CONFESSION If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us: but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloke them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble voice unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me:
Kneel All Almighty and most merciful Father, We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, We have offended against thy holy laws, We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, And we have done those things which we ought not to have done, And there is no health in us: But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders; Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults, Restore thou them that are penitent, According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord: And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins: He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Stand THE OPENING RESPONSES O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s Name be praised. Music: Philip Radcliffe (1905-86)
The choir sings the OFFICE HYMN While Christ s disciples grieving sad, their master s painful death deplore, whom faithless servants cruel hands, had bathed in his own crimson gore. Quick from the happy realms above, an angel comes on joyful wing, and to the women tells the joy that to his flock their Lord will bring. As they with eager steps make haste, their joyous message to repeat, their master s glorious form they see, and falling clasp his sacred feet. Cheered by this tale his faithful flock the Galilean mount ascend, and there with loving awe behold their heart s sole wish their truest friend. That thou mayst be our Paschal joy through happy, never-ending years, thine own poor children Jesu, free from sin s sad death with all its fears. To God the Father, and the Son, who rose from death, glad praise repeat; let equal praise be ever sung to God the Holy Paraclete. Amen. Words: liturgical, anonymous Music: Plainsong
Sit The choir sings the PSALM My heart is inditing of a good matter : I speak of the things which I have made unto the King. My tongue is the pen : of a ready writer. Thou art fairer than the children of men : full of grace are thy lips, because God hath blessed thee for ever. Gird thee with thy sword upon thy thigh, O thou most Mighty : according to thy worship and renown. Good luck have thou with thine honour : ride on, because of the word of truth, of meekness, and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Thy arrows are very sharp, and the people shall be subdued unto thee : even in the midst among the King's enemies. Thy seat, O God, endureth for ever : the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity : wherefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. All thy garments smell of myrrh, aloes, and cassia : out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women : upon thy right hand did stand the queen in a vesture of gold, wrought about with divers colours. Hearken, O daughter, and consider, incline thine ear : forget also thine own people, and thy father's house. So shall the King have pleasure in thy beauty : for he is thy Lord God, and worship thou him. And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift : like as the rich also among the people shall make their supplication before thee.
The King's daughter is all glorious within : her clothing is of wrought gold. She shall be brought unto the King in raiment of needle-work : the virgins that be her fellows shall bear her company, and shall be brought unto thee. With joy and gladness shall they be brought : and shall enter into the King's palace. Instead of thy fathers thou shalt have children : whom thou mayest make princes in all lands. I will remember thy Name from one generation to another : therefore shall the people give thanks unto thee, world without end. Stand Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost : As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Words: Psalm 45 Music: W. G. Alcock (1861-1947)
Sit THE FIRST LESSON As I looked, a stormy wind came out of the north: a great cloud with brightness around it and fire flashing forth continually, and in the middle of the fire, something like gleaming amber. In the middle of it was something like four living creatures. This was their appearance: they were of human form. Each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf s foot; and they sparkled like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. And the four had their faces and their wings thus: their wings touched one another; each of them moved straight ahead, without turning as they moved. As for the appearance of their faces: the four had the face of a human being, the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle; such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each creature had two wings, each of which touched the wing of another, while two covered their bodies. Each moved straight ahead; wherever the spirit would go, they went, without turning as they went. In the middle of the living creatures there was something that looked like burning coals of fire, like torches moving to and fro among the living creatures; the fire was bright, and lightning issued from the fire. The living creatures darted to and fro, like a flash of lightning. Ezekiel 1. 4-14
Stand MAGNIFICAT O ye Saints and just ones rejoice in the Lord, Alleluia : the Lord has chosen you for his inheritance, Alleluia. My soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. O ye Saints and just ones rejoice in the Lord, Alleluia : the Lord has chosen you for his inheritance, Alleluia. Words: Luke 1. 46-55 Music: Evening Service in D, Edward C. Bairstow (1874-1946)
Sit SECOND LESSON In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. Do your best to come to me soon, for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry. 2 Timothy 4. 1-11
Stand NUNC DIMITTIS Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace : according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen : thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared : before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles : and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 2. 29-32 Music: Evening Service in D, Edward C. Bairstow (1874-1946)
THE CREED I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried, He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead, He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the holy Ghost; The holy Catholick Church; The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. The choir sings the RESPONSES. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Kneel or sit Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.
Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. THE COLLECT FOR THE FEAST OF MARK THE EVANGELIST Almighty God, who hast enlightened thy holy Church through the inspired witness of thine evangelist Saint Mark: grant that we, being rooted and grounded in the truth of the gospel, may be faithful to its teaching both in word and deed; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE COLLECT FOR PEACE O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. THE COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Music: Philip Radcliffe (1905-85) Sit ANTHEM The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me with the Gospel of the poor: He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord; To give unto them that mourn a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Words: Isaiah 61. 1-3, 11 Music: Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
Kneel or sit THE PRAYERS The prayers end with the Grace: The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen. Stand
HYMN The saint who first found grace to pen the life which was the life of men, and shed abroad the Gospel s ray, his fame we celebrate today. Lo, drawn by Pentecostal fire, his heart conceived its great desire, when pure of mind, inspired, he heard and with his hand set forth the Word. Then, clearly writ, the Godhead shone serene and fair to look upon; and through that record still comes power to lighten souls in death s dark hour. O holy mind, for wisdom fit wherein that Life of lives stood writ, may we through minds of like accord show forth the patterns of our Lord. And so may all whose minds are dark be led to truth by good Saint Mark, and after this our earthly strife stand written in the Book of Life. Words: Laurence Housman (1865-1959) Music: Brockham, NEH 163, Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1673-1707)
