Sol-Land Lodge #2-086 Kennewick, WA June 2008 Message From the President Midsummer's eve (or St. Hans Af ten) is nearly upon us and that means our annual picnic with our friends from the Walla Walla lodge. With a new location and some fun activities planned, this should prove to be a great start to the summer. There were a couple member requests for carpooling, so there will be some work in the next week to try to match up those that can give a ride to those who want a ride. Give me a call (628-3391) if you find yourself in either category. I would also like to point out that one of the planned activities is a pie contest this can only work if we have pies to judge! So, get out your favorite recipe and make a pie for the contest! I have been pleased to receive some inquiries about our Gangmerke (walking) sports medal and how to earn it. You'll find a copy of the mileage sheet in this newsletter. Just cut it out, fill in the miles as you walk (I record them once a week) and have a witness sign it. Once complete they can be turned in to our sports director. Several members are well on their way to earning their bronze and silver walking medals and I would love to have more members join them. Our TUBFRIM campaign is going strong with one month left to go. The 8 oz. of stamps collected at the May meeting brings us to almost a half-pound (8 oz.) of our goal. One more month like last month will push us over the top of our goal, so bring in those stamps! Finally, don't forget that we will be having meetings over the summer. Although the picnic will count as June's meeting, we will have meetings at the same time and place in July and August, so be sure not to miss them! Hilse fra presidenten, DJ Watson General Information about the Lodge Sol Land Lodge holds a monthly meeting on the third Friday of the month. We have a potluck beginning at 6:30 PM. Guests are NOT expected to bring food, just to come and enjoy themselves. The general meeting or cultural activity begins about 7:30. We meet at the Kennewick First Lutheran, on 395 and Yelm. We have a monthly board meeting on the first Monday of the month at 7 PM also at First Lutheran. The current president is DJ Watson (628-3391), the secretary is Vernie Tiwater (628-9987). They can supply you with names and phone numbers for other officers if you need them. If you wish to come to a meeting, but do not have transportation, give us a call and we can arrange it for you. If you are interested in membership, give one of us a call; we can tell you what we are all about and how to go about becoming a member. You can also check out our lodge website at www.sol-land.org.

Call for Entries for the 2008 District and International Folk Art Exhibitions & Competitions. As a part of the 60th Biennial Convention, Sons of Norway is inviting all members, both amateur and professional, to participate. The exhibition and competition, being held August 27-30 in San Diego, California, will highlight the talents of numerous folk artists in a number of different disciplines. Everyone who enters will receive a certificate of participation and a unique pin for their contribution. Ribbons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in a variety of categories, a People s Choice award and the Best-in-Show prize for the judges favorite overall item will be awarded. Remember, members do not have to participate in a district folk art exhibit to participate in the International Folk Art Exhibition & Competition. It is open to all members. However, if you DO have an item that you would like to display/enter at the District exhibit, please let Nancy know ASAP, as it needs to go along on the 18th. All entries must have been completed within the last two years. President D.J. Watson V. Red Buttons Never raise your hand to your kids. It leaves your groin unprotected. Jimmy Piersal, on how to diaper a baby Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then, fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher's mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again. Ernest Hemingway To be a successful father, there's one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don't look at it for the first two years. Bill Cosby If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the fact that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right. Peter De Vries My father hated radio and he could not wait for television to be invented so that he could hate that too. Charles Wadsworth By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong.
