It is time to make our New Year resolutions or not. I have conflicting feelings about that ritual. The trend tends to go like this. Find an area in your life that needs improvement. Stand boldly on New Year s Day and declare that this year I am going do something about that! So far, great success. The problem begins to occur when we have to do something about it. Whether it s life s too busy or I don t feel like doing that right now, the follow-through is always the most difficult part. I know that story more personally than I would like to admit. But I know it well enough that I also discovered a few tidbits that lie underneath the surface. First, our New Year s resolutions are most often self-improvement topics: losing weight, arriving on time, healthy eating, spending less money The problem with selfimprovement is that while it is not always so difficult to do those things once or twice, self-improvement demands that we do them all the time. It is just difficult to change a lifetime of habits for the rest of our life. Secondly, self-improvement is often done alone thus the word self. To further complicate things, we often feel the rest of the world is watching us, which adds pressure and worry to fulfilling our goals. Worry often makes achievement more difficult as we feel weighed down. Finally, it is hard to feel joyous when selfimproving because we are usually taking something away from ourselves. As you may have guessed, I am not overly excited about the selfimprovement form of New Year s resolutions. But there is another way of approaching resolutions that I find more beneficial: spiritually based resolutions. An article I read recently really describes this better than I could myself. It was an article by a rabbi on how to find happiness. He made the argument that we are born as happy people but learn to cover up our joy as we grow older. Take babies, for example--they are naturally happy unless something disturbs them hunger, dirty diaper, cold But as soon as that disturbance is relieved the baby goes back to happiness. As we grow older we become more self aware, which in turn causes us to focus on ourselves our desires, our goals, our achievements. What happens is our focus shifts from our natural happiness God gave us to focusing on ourselves. When we make this shift we begin to look for happiness from ourselves accomplishing our own goals, fulfilling our own desires, succeeding in our achievements. There is some happiness that comes from these things, but it is not the same as natural happiness that God gives us. Furthermore, once each of things is achieved, it are done and isolated in the past. The happiness diminishes the further we get away from the achievement which requires us to keep doing more to maintain the happiness. It s a bit of a rat race.
Page 2 - The Proverb January 2017 To spiritually make resolutions is to take a vacation from these self-achieving goals. It simply means doing something for someone else as God calls us to do. What is interesting is as we bless others, there is a deeper and more genuine joy that rises up within us and it is more sustaining. Furthermore, blessing others can be simple and extremely easy to maintain smiling at three people daily, saying a kind word to someone new each day, offering a helping hand to someone you wouldn t normally help, on a somewhat regular basis. These do not have to be hard, nor do they have to be done consistently just regularly. The outcome I have found incredible. As the joy rises up, I find myself wanting to engage in others more often. And as that joy increases, I find myself quite naturally want to take care of myself more too. For true happiness comes from within who God made us to be, not in feeding our own self -gratification. Motions from the Special Session Meeting 12/10/16: Motion: It was moved that the Session unanimously recommends that the 2017 Terms of Call be presented to the congregation for approval at the Annual Meeting on January 15, 2017. Approved. Motions from the Stated Session Meeting 12/15/16: Motion: It was moved and seconded to change the date of the Annual Meeting of the Congregation of KMUPC to January 22, 2017. Motion approved. Motion: It was moved and seconded to report the weekly deposits in the Proverb Newsletter and not the weekly bulletin. Motion approved. Motion: It was moved and seconded to allocate 5 % of our 2016 pledged receipts to Mission to be disbursed as the Mission Committee sees fit. Motion approved. Kitty Schultz and Larry Lemmenes will be in charge of the Sacrament of Holy Communion on January 15th. Please let them know if you or someone you know would like a home communion visit. The title of the program is STAR TRIP: Our Faith Awakens. All are encouraged to attend this special performance! DIABETIC LIFE CLASS: Patti Sobchak, RN and Diabetic Educator, will offer this class for anyone who has diabetes, pre-diabetes, or has a family member with either condition. Classes will meet at church and run for 6 consecutive Sundays from February 12 through March 19. Each session will begin at Noon and go until 2:30 p.m. (Lunch will be determined.) In order to offer this class, Patti will need 10 people to participate. Feel free to invite people who don t attend our church to join this class. More information will come in later, but if interested, please get these dates on your calendar now! Sally is the President and Treasurer for The Africa Circle of Hope Foundation, which works to support education in urban slums and rural areas of Kenya. Sally, a resident of Mapleton, has visited with us before and we support her program through our Mission gifts.
Page 6 - The Proverb January 2017 PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN: Next Meeting: Monday, January 9 at 9:30 a.m. January is the time for Presbyterian Women s Annual BABY SHOWER. In January the crib will go up after we take down our Christmas decorations and stay up till the beginning of March to collect baby items to make up layettes that we distribute to organization to help new mothers in need. Bring items and place them in the crib. Wouldn't it be great if we could make at least 8 layettes this year?! Here are some ideas of things we could use: clothing - sizes up to 18 months, onesies, bibs, hats, receiving blankets, crib blankets, diapers, ointment, wipes, lotion (no powder, please), bottles, bottle brushes, books, rattles and many other items. Knitters and crocheters, get busy making those tiny hats, blankets, etc. We appreciate each and every thing donated. WOMEN OF FAITH: Next Meeting: Thursday, January 19 at 12:30 p.m. Bring a sandwich! MARK YOUR CALENDAR! 37th Annual Women s Ecumenical Breakfast Saturday, February 11, 2017 9:00 11:30 a.m. Come to St. John s and enjoy breakfast with other ladies and beat the winter humdrums! Breakfast starts at 9:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall with a program following up in the sanctuary. Our guest speaker is Pam Bartee, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lebanon, WI. She teaches at their Lebanon Lutheran School and had the opportunity to be part of a mission team that was affiliated with the Malawi Orphan Care Project.
