Jubilee Year of Mercy Part Two: The Purpose Part 2 of 3, a simplified initial explanation The primary reason for making the pilgrimage to a Church or Shrine is, of course, for the renewal of our faith and to seek God s holiness in our lives. This Jubilee, Pope Francis wants us to have a true encounter with the mercy of God. He also wants our faith to be strengthened so that our witness to our Catholic Faith would be all the more effective.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Part Two cont d... So this Jubilee Year will be all about MERCY and all about forgiveness, grace and a new beginning in life. We know that when we approach the amazing Mystery of Repentance (i.e. Confession) in humility and sincerity, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ forgives us all and every sin we may have committed because we come asking for His forgiveness. After the Priest speaks the words of absolution we go forth in joy as we marvel at the boundless mercy of our Lord. However, we are invariably bound to perform some penance given to us by the Priest and perhaps even some in addition that we, in the depth of our souls, feel motivated to perform on our own. We are forgiven, but that which we damaged or broke by our sin needs to be repaired and made right. That is why we do penance to make restitution for the destruction and wound caused by our offences. The guilt of sin has been forgiven, but a temporal punishment remains and by much penance or the next. However, occasionally a special grace granted by the church (such as during a Holy Year), that fair punishment may be remitted through an indulgence that we may gain with a minimum of effort. (It is sort of like a royal pardon of mercy issued to a criminal who is truly guilty, and forgiven by his victims, but is still serving his due sentence of prison or paying off a debt according to justice.) Since we are still very much connected with the Saints in heaven and those who have died and must yet pay that just debt before entering into the heavenly presence of God, the Church also extends this Indulgence to our deceased loved one. This would mean that by our prayers and actions we may help those who are not able to pray for themselves. We may interceded for them and obtain for them the full Jubilee indulgence by performing the pilgrimage for them and by fulfilling the conditions for them. [NB We may do so often and for many different deceased souls, but only once daily.] This possibility of obtaining this indulgence for others is only extended to the souls of purgatory as those still journeying through this earthly life must and can obtain such a special grace for themselves. (We still can and should, nonetheless, keep them in our prayer which also helps much!~thank you to the chancellor@ archeparchy.ca for this simple explanation.
