ORDER OF WORSHIP Gathering Chime Prelude Prelude Guilmant Welcome and Announcements (Please sign the Welcome Book and pass it to your neighbor.) Introit Praise Ye, the Lord of Hosts Saint-Saens *Call to Worship (* Please stand as you are able.) One: Praise the Lord! All: Let all who draw breath praise the Lord. One: Happy are those whose help is from God the One who made heaven and earth, the One who created the seas and all that is in them. All: Happy are those whose hope is in God the One who keeps faith forever, the One who feeds the hungry and defends the oppressed. One: God will reign forever, for all generations. Praise the Lord! All: Let all who draw breath praise the Lord. *Hymn Sing Praise to God No. 645 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Your Word reminds us that we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves. But we make far too many distinctions, treating one person with more dignity and respect than another. We gladly welcome those who look and act like us, but give a much less enthusiastic welcome to the stranger. Forgive us for the moments when our faith has been empty, 2

for the times that our works have not matched our words. Help us lean ever more towards your goodness and help our lives reflect that goodness in concrete ways. Silent Confessions *Response Rock of Ages (v. 2) No. 438 Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law s demands. Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone. Thou must save and thou alone. *Assurance of God s Mercy *Response We Are Forgiven No. 447 We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. *Sharing the Peace of Christ (11:00 a.m. service) One: May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All: and also with you. One: Let us share that peace with one another. Prayer for Illumination Scripture Readings Wisdom Literature: Psalm 146 Read responsively One: Praise the LORD, O my soul! All: I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. One: Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. All: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; 3

who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. One: The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. All: The LORD watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. One: The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. All: Praise the LORD! One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 NT, p. 17 Sermon Teachable Moments Lori Pistor *Hymn For Everyone Born (vv. 1-3) No. 769 Time with Our Children Blessing of the Backpacks (see inside back page) Commissioning of Faith Formation Teachers, Leaders, and Advisors (see inside back cover) Offering Offertory Anthem Praise to God, Immortal Praise Chancel Choir Purifoy Praise to God, immortal praise, for the love that crowns our days! Bounteous source of every joy, let thy praise our tongues employ. All to thee, our God, we owe, source from whom all blessings flow. As thy prospering hand hath blest, may we give thee of our best. And by deeds of kindly love for thy mercies grateful prove, Singing thus through all our days praise to God, immortal praise! 4

All the plenty summer pours, autumn s rich o erflowing stores, Flocks that whiten all the plain, yellow sheaves of ripened grain, Lord, for these our souls shall raise grateful vows of solemn praise. Singing thus through all our days praise to God, immortal praise! Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise him, all creatures here below. Praise him above, ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. All to thee, our God, we owe, source from whom all blessings flow. For the love that crowns our days, praise to God, immortal praise! Sacrament of Communion Invitation to the Table Hymn One Bread, One Body (vv. 1-2) No. 530 Communion Prayer Holy God, source of all being, you are greater by far than our human thoughts can comprehend. With all that you have created, you abide; weeping with us in grief and pain, rejoicing with us in life and love. You are everywhere in this very moment; holding the entirety of living experience and weaving us together in the great and intricate tapestry of Creation. Creator God, mother and father of us all, in your holy love you took on our limitations. Born of a body, bound within a body, you know the whole of this human experience. Learning to communicate with words; teaching us to communicate with presence. Learning the fears that wring us dry; teaching us of the love that nurtures us back to life. Everlasting God, you are everywhere and right here. As close as the air we breathe, the air which binds us one to another and all to your beautiful creation. You are as close as the sunlight on our skin, as close as the rain that drips from our hair; the wind and the water that push us and lead us and call us again and again into relationship with one another and with you. 5

Holy Spirit, divine Advocate, guide and encourage us. Stir within our hearts, that we may speak anew the familiar words that Jesus taught us: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Words of Institution Sharing the Feast (All bread is gluten free.) Communion is served in the pews. As you pass the bread or the cup, offer words to your neighbor such as: The bread of Life; The cup of Salvation. Take and hold the bread; then as one body all will eat together. Take and hold a cup; then all will drink together, in one Spirit. Prayer after Communion *Hymn For Everyone Born (vv. 4-5) No. 769 *Benediction *Response Amen Stainer Chancel Choir * Postlude Postlude in G Major Couperin The flowers in the Sanctuary are given by Jim and Barbara Turner to the glory of God and in loving memory of Barbara s sister, Betty Scott After worship, the Officer of the Day will be available in the Narthex with the Ask Me sign to answer any visitor or member questions.
