12-24-2017 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16 Romans 16:25-27 Luke 1:26-38 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: A Message from Father Don In today s Gospel reading about the annunciation, an angel tells Mary that she is to be the mother of Jesus. The angel recalls the prophecy to David that we saw in the first reading. The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. He will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary does not understand this great mystery but accepts God s will humbly: I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. Mary is presented as the true, first disciple who does the will of God. When she was hardly more than a child herself, she accepted God s plan for her life and became a model woman of faith for all, no matter their circumstances. With a tremendous leap of faith, Mary has shown us that all things are possible with God. There may be times in your life when God will ask of you things that you do not completely understand. Mary s openness to God s will can help you. As the Advent season draws to a close, I ask you to spend some time meditating on this passage. Discern how the actions of your life witness to trust in God. Determine what you need to do in order to be willing to accept God s call and to gradually discover the full meaning of God s will. Pray lovingly and gratefully to Mary for the blessings she helps to bring to us.
