The Feast of the Epiphany Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: `And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2: 1-12 A New Year s Prayer For 2019 God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. Amen As we bid a fond farewell to 2018, we welcome with anticipation a New Year 2019 and all of the hopes and challenges that it will surely bring. January is the time that we settle into the winter term and look forward to the many exciting things that the remainder of the school year brings. Our grade 2 and 7 students are continuing preparations to receive the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation please keep them in your prayers. @Edmund_st @DPCDSBSchool We would like to welcome Mr. Enriquez who will be replacing Mr. Martins as the Head Custodian at St. Edmund. Mr. Enriquez brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience and will be a wonderful addition to the St. Edmund community. I wish everyone health and happiness for 2019! May we continue to strive to make every day in our lives as beautiful and meaningful as Christmas Day! T. Podobnik Principal
THE VIRTUE OF THE MONTH God has given us the ability to choose. We are able to control how we react to what happens around us. We may feel pressure from inside or from outside ourselves to react violently to a situation. We ve all lost it at one time or another. We are never proud of those moments. As soon as they happen we make a promise that they will not happen again. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at controlling our reactions. We can get better at showing self-control. Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that we will regret. Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that will harm ourselves or others. Self-control is one of the marks of a spiritually mature person. When we all use self-control, we can be sure that our school will be a safe, caring and inclusive place to live and learn. A person with self-control is patient knows how to wait his/her turn can calm himself/herself down and think before reacting to situations knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing, fighting, etc.) works to include others can think things through and do what is best for everyone Let us pray this month, for the grace and courage to be people of self-control people who will resist the temptation to cause harm to ourselves or to others around us. Catholic Education: Distinctly Different Ontario s Catholic education system is not a duplicate of other school systems. While it adheres to Ministry of Education requirements, it does so from a Catholic perspective. The curriculum is enhanced by Gospel values. Teachers are professionally trained and committed to serving in Catholic schools. At the heart of Catholic education is the person of Jesus. Faith development is integral to every part of Catholic education, as students are called to respect the dignity of all human persons in a caring community. In the Catholic education system, home, school and parish form a vital partnership. Through participation in the community and involvement with the parish, students are guided by the Gospel values, principles and standards that reach into every facet of school life.
