YEAR 5 UNIT B MIRACLES & THE SACRAMENT OF THE SICK A B O U T T H E U N I T In this unit chidren earn about some of the miraces of Jesus and the work of the Church to hea and care for the sick in Christ s name. P R I O R L E A R N I N G It is hepfu if chidren have: some knowedge of the miraces of Jesus. W H E R E T H E U N I T F I T S I N This unit draws together materias studied in Key Stage 1 units and in Year 4 about roes and responsibiities in the Church. A S S E S S M E N T At the end of this unit: Most chidren wi know a number of miraces of Jesus and identify how his actions brought change to peope s ives. Know about some paces of pigrimage and prayer for the sick. Understand that the Sacrament of the Sick is an important ceebration for those who are i. More abe chidren wi have a greater understanding of the change Jesus brought to the ives of peope through his miraces. They wi be abe to discuss the important work of the Church today in caring for the sick and wi be abe to recognise the importance of some pigrimages for those who are i. P R O G R A M M E O F S T U D Y R3 Hear about and expore the Bibe. R4 Hear, read and expore the Gospe accounts of key events in the ife of Jesus, e.g. Nativity. Ch1 The ways Jesus procaimed the Good News to everyone he met and the variety of responses he made. T E A C H I N G S T R AT E G I E S Chidren to name the magicians that they see on Teevision. Invite the chidren to demonstrate their magic tricks. Investigate with the chidren the difference between a magic trick and a mirace. Use a variety of dictionaries to expore definitions of a mirace. Word-process these definitions to add to a cass dispay. Using Bibe references, the chidren are to find different Mirace stories incuding the Cure of the Demoniac, the Heaing of the Woman with a Haemorrhage, the Heaing of the Man Born Bind, the Caming of the Storm and the Feeding of the Five Thousand. Organise the information found in chart form under various headings (e.g. Where? Who? The Probem? Resoution) Focus the chidren s attention on the words and the actions of Jesus. Can they identify any simiarities? Why was Jesus abe to do these things? Do you think that the Miraces heped peope to understand who Jesus was? Identify the difference between a heaing mirace and a nature mirace. Ask the chidren to think about the things onookers might have said about Jesus after the miraces took pace. Were peope ony cured or heped in some way? How do you think their ives were changed by what Jesus did for them? Brainstorm ots of ideas and create a mind-map. Write an account of one of these miraces as one of the peope who was there. Set the scene, identify the probems, the actions of Jesus and the change it brought to peope s ives. R1 Observe and recognise ways in which peope of today can hear and respond to God s ca. Today, many peope of faith seek heaing from sickness. Some peope never experience this heaing. Does God no onger hear prayers and hea peope? Revise with the chidren the importance of praying for peope who are sick. Introduce the chidren to the word pigrimage. Find definitions for it from the dictionary. Identify different paces of pigrimage where Christians gather to pray and sometimes seek God s heaing. Use maps to ocate these different paces (e.g. Lourdes, Wasingham, Knock, etc.) Research the story of some of these paces and find reasons why they are important paces for Cathoics to visit. Are pigrimages just for sick peope? How can they hep the rest of us? Create a trave brochure on some paces of pigrimage saying why they are important, their ocation, their origins and reasons why peope might benefit from such a visit Incude pictures and any other pubished information. Ch5 Key images of the Church used in Scripture and Tradition. Revise with the chidren the definition of the Church being more than a buiding, being the Peope of God and the Body of Christ here on earth. Expain to the chidren that cathoic Christians beieve that Jesus continues to work through the peope of his Church. Revise the prayer of St. Theresa of Avia. Christ has no hands but your hands. Revise with the chidren previous earning in Year Three and Year Four about the seven Sacraments. The chidren shoud reca and try and categorise them into three groups. 8

Know and be abe to reca a number of miraces performed by Jesus incuding The Curing of the Demoniac, The Heaing of a Woman with a Haemorrhage, and the Heaing of the Man Born Bind. Understand that Jesus was abe to work these miraces because he was the Son of God. Describe how peopes ives were changed by Jesus heaing them Identify on the map of the Hoy Land different paces associated with the miraces of Jesus. R1 That ove and service express ove of God and a response to God s Word, and at times this wi invove sacrifice. Know that pigrimages are a specia form of prayer. Know about some of the major Christian reigious shrines in the United Kingdom and around the word. Understand some reasons why peope make specia pigrimages to these paces of faith. Be abe to research some information about these specia paces. Use the internet to research information about paces of pigrimage. Create a cass dispay of photographs, pictures and artefacts about pigrimages. Ch5 That Jesus Christ is the source of the Church s unity and hoiness. Know the names of the Seven sacraments. Understand that these are actions of Jesus Christ today. Be abe to categorise the Sacraments. continued 9

P R O G R A M M E O F S T U D Y T E A C H I N G S T R AT E G I E S 1) Sacraments of Initiation or Beonging which are Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. 2) Sacraments of Heaing which are the Anointing of the Sick and Reconciiation. 3) Sacraments of Commitment which are Marriage and Hoy Orders. Expain to the Chidren that Cathoics beieve these are seven powerfu signs through which Jesus Christ continues his work today. Show the chidren photographs and pictures of the Sacrament of the Sick being administered. Expore the gestures of aying on of hands and anointing with the Oi of the Sick. Why do you think these gestures might be performed? Hear the words that are said to the sick person as they are anointed with the oi on their forehead and hands: Through this hoy anointing may the Lord in his ove and mercy strengthen you by the grace of the Hoy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up. Expore the meaning of these words with the chidren. Invite your oca priest and or deacon to tak to the chidren about the way the parish cares for the peope who are sick. Chidren to write a prayer for the sick and invite the priest, deacon or eucharistic minister to take these to the sick when they next visit. 10

Understand that in the Sacrament of the Sick Jesus Christ brings heaing and peace to those who are i. Be abe to describe the actions that take pace at the ceebration of the Sacrament of the Sick. 11
